Merged Greenland is part of NATO via Denmark

To denote when two or more threads have been merged
Denmark has passed a bunch of laws preventing Greenland to exploit its natural resources. Instead they want Greenland to be a nature reserve and a tourist destination. There's just no way tourism can generate that amount of money. Its too far north. And there's already not enough jobs for the inuits. If they switch to USA they can start extracting the oil and minerals.

My guess is though that before it happens Greenland can leverage this and start extracting their resources while staying with Denmark.

DrZoidberg, your naivety continues to astound with how great is its growth rate. If you want a crate of milk, you can purchase it from the farm, you don't have to buy the whole farm. Greenlanders do not want to be part of the USA. It would be like offering a hero to join a NY gang.
Denmark and Greenland have already offered talks to the USA (specifically Marco Rubio) to talk about sales of rare earths and other things.

In what way am I naive?

I didn't say this was a good thing.

Its too early to say what the Greenlanders think. I'm guessing this will be a topic next election. They'll be asking what's in it for Greenland to stick with Denmark. A very good question, they will struggle to answer.

Trump has now opened the door, and Greenland is free to secede at any point.
I'm sure Greenland will look at Puerto Rico and think, 'yeah, this will be great!'

I suspect they will look at Alaska
Alaska is a state, not a territory.

My point is that there's a fully legal way for Trump to nab Greenland that won't risk ww3. So that's obviously how he'd do it.
That's the dumbest analysis I have read in a long time. It amounts to saying "Obviously Trump is a rational person who thinks things through carefully before acting".

That's so far removed from obvious that it can't even see a hint of obvious with binoculars on a clear day from a high tower.

Alaska is a state. Do you think Greenland would become a state before Puerto Rico (or DC for that matter)? If the Greenlanders think they’d get two Senators in Congress they are just as delusional as Trump.

Shit, with over 800,000 sq. mi., our majesty could get missile bases, oil derricks, rare metal mines, and a whole gulag for the TPS and undocumented peoples from shithole nations. He probably lulls himself to sleep imagining the detainees making their own igloos at Camp Donald Magnus Regnum and Melania Ice Zone #35. ICE will mean ice.

I think it’s cute someone believes Trump secretly wants to help the Inuit people of Greenland.
I saw an interview with AZ Senator Ruben Gallego, and as he often does, he cut through the bullshit. Plain and simple, Trump sees Greenland as a big island and a way for part of his "legacy" to brag about how he expanded the territory of the US for the first time in generations. He probably doesn't even know that most of it is uninhabited. He just wants a big new "piece of America."
To call "Trumpland".

Russia wants the US to control access to the NW Passage and keep it from Europe (because they lack the power to do so themselves), which requires the US having access to
I was waiting for "Russia did it!"
Deal with it. Trump is doing Putin's bidding. I mean, unless you want to suggest Russia just by sheer luck benefits from all of the changes in US policies in Europe.
Of course he does, because....... pee tapes. Putin calls Trump every hour and reminds him about them.

Seriously, what happened to your famous "Check and Balances System"?
could not deal with a man-child?
Or maybe "Money" secretly want Trump to do what he does?

The Inuit of Greenland have no power in Denmark now, and they're Danish citizens. Denmark has a proportional governement, ie Greenlanders have no power at all in the Danish parliament. Sheer numbers matter.

They'd be trading no power + poverty with Denmark for no power + money with USA. They'd also be trading being part of a nation with virtually zero international power for a country with the most international power.

The economies are comparable. Both USA and Denmark are exceedingly well run countries with strong economies.

Here's another fun fact. When you call the Danish authorties it'll be answered by Greenland operators. They do all phone support for the Danish govornement. Denmark has outsourced as much administration to Greenland as possible. This is purely a method to create jobs in a region that has very little going for it, financially. Not everyone wants to be a fisherman. Which is another reason Greenlanders might want to start extracting the oil. It'll create jobs.

It was knifed by Gingrich in the mid 90s and it appears to be bleeding out and dying now. Though it is less Congress as it is the GOP. The GOP told Nixon to leave. The GOP is paralyzed for unknown reasons.

Wait! Russia did not do it?! How is that possible?!

Not everything is Russia's fault. Just the things that are Russia's fault. Something not being Russia's fault isn't evidence that Russia isn't faulting elsewhere.

No, everything is Russia's fault. Even your inability to link Gingrich to Russia is Russia's fault. Must be some russian drugs you were subjected to.

Greenland would also be on what is called the "frontline". There is no evidence Greenland would be compensated for any mineral rights. Or benefit from any spending or riches from the US. As a reminder, Trump is trying to reduce benefits in the US, not expand them. Forget the whole health care coverage thing.

To make matters a tad bit more confusing, there is already an agreement between the US and Denmark about military access to Greenland, which makes this entire Trump process ridiculously stupid. Trump wants to protect the NW Passage, he can ask Denmark about a base in Northern Greenland. Of course, if this was about providing protection to the NW Passage and not a long term middle finger to Europe to reduce their access, we could see why Trump might not be going the existing framework pathway.

Create jobs. So out of the blue, the Inuit will be capable of mining or running a mine? Any mineral production will require notable infrastructure improvements as well. Greenland will become like North Dakota, lots of jobs and nowhere to live (and as a bonus, no way to get to the job).

Greenland is on the frontline now between USA and Russia. And was the entire cold war. That won't change regardless of what flag flies on it.

There's no evidence this is about oil or mineral rights at all. We're just speculating. But Trump is a businessman. I think he understands how deals work. The Greenlanders also understand business and understand that they'll only sell themselves if the price is right.

As a reminder, Trump is trying to reduce benefits in the US, not expand them. Forget the whole health care coverage thing.

That's ideology. Not evidence of Trumps evil. He's a Republican doing the Republican thing. You can't blame him for doing exactly the thing he promised he'd do in the election. If anything this is part of the platform that elected him, ie the will of the people.

USA already has a military base on Greenland. In fact, since WW2 there's been more US soldiers stationed on Greenland than Danish soldiers. That's still the situation.

Obviously this isn't about national security. That's an incredibly stupid justification. When it comes to that, USA already has everything they could ever want. Up until now, Denmark could not have been cooperating more with USA. Despite Trumps all silly statements, there's no talk about forcing USA to close the base.

It's like someone eating the entire carton of popcorn that was supposed to be for everyone, and then cries about that it's not fair that it ran out. Trump isn't making any sense. I think it's just a power play. Showing everyone how USA can push everyone around.

You have such little faith in the capability of the inuit. Denmark has plenty of oil rigs currently operating in the North sea. Many inuit workers. Denmark is now winding down their oil production and are planning to phase out the entire industry by 2050 (because oil is so last century *roll eyes*). So Greenland now has plenty of trained inuit oil rig specialists retraining as tourist guides for hikers. This number will keep increasing.

Here's the thing. Because of the thick ice sheet getting to most of the Greenland oil has been prohibitively expensive. But as the ice sheet retreats that oil is starting to make financial sense to extract. The same goes for the mineral wealth locked up in the permafrost under Greenland. It's suspiscious that Trump started to show an interest for Greenland just when the specialists started talking about the economic viability of Greenland oil. Very suspicious.

There's no evidence this is about oil or mineral rights at all
I don't like the sound of Trump's voice either but I'm pretty sure he's mentioned minerals in Greenland in the same rant at least once...

I agree with you. Zoidberg has used hyperbolic language, i.e. "at all," which is false. He should have said it's part of a bigger picture. So minerals and oil are "vital assets" and oligarchs want those--that's the grift--but there are also geopolitical intentions associated with those assets. The bigger picture of the whole Greenland noise is one of geopolitics and included within that are assets but there's also an idea of bases, security, and land, even if there's some corruption there. This bigger picture is quite aggressive as you know.

See pages 15-18. Understand words such as "partner country" or "regional country" really mean "vassal country." Phrases such as "our companies" and "US businesses" mean American oligarchs.

Minerals are mentioned, too, as part of the bigger picture.

Trump is a businessman. I think he understands how deals work.
I think you have swallowed far too much of his bullshit. Trump doesn't understand shit about deals; He is just a bully. He is not a businessman, he's a "businessman", in the sense that Al Capone was a "businessman".

A deal requires justified trust between parties. Nobody can ever trust Donald Trump; Therefore Trump cannot be a businessman.

Crime does not require trust. Trump is an exellent criminal.
