Yet another war, this time with Iran

So, 60 days and mighty US military is not close to capturing Tehran. In fact you currently hold 0% of Iran.
How is that even possible?
Seeing we have no ground troops in the region it really isn't surprising at all. Had the US mobilized two million soldiers, and easily landed on the Iranian coast, we'd still likely not be in Tehran.
Nah, I remember your (retired) generals predicting Tehran in 3 days. So where is the victory?
As victorious as 3 days to Kyiv I guess.
Yes the same american generals were saying that too.
You really need a better news source.

Jewishness are both a race, ethnic group, religion and today also often a reference to Israel.

I can roll with the “ethnic group and religion” argument, but Jews being a race? Nah, that’s one of those “consult your imaginary Jewish friend” moments.

We're talking about word usage. Do you think Nazis think Jews are a race? If yes, it goes in the Jewish synonym word bag.

I personally think people in general aren't sure why they hate jews, they just do. So its a bit of a moot point

Must I remind you that the only reason we’re even having this conversation is because you dragged your sorry ass into another topic to falsely throw antisemitism at me. And if you still haven’t figured it out by now, I don’t fucking appreciate being smeared with bullshit accusations every time you run out of an argument.

I can't remember whether or not you've said anything racist, nor if I called you qn antisemite. But you did call me white knighting for calling out racists here. Which is what I reacted against, and which I called you out on. Which you did.

I don't take calling people racists lightly. But this place does have a serious antisemitism problem. You can try to minimise it all you want. That doesn't change facts.

Your memory is failing you. What you keep dishonestly calling an accusation of “white knighting” was me reversing your own ridiculous tactic of branding any criticism of Israel or concern for dead civilians as “Hamas support” or antisemitism.

That's just bullshit attempts to minimise the extremely threatened situation Israel is in. Is still in btw.

Its not a tactic. Its just me calling out racist hate on the forum. That's still not white knighting.

I intentionally framed you as having a fetish for the harming of children and accused you of using Jewish people as a human shield for your arguments specifically to mirror how absurd and manipulative your rhetoric sounds.

The problem with this framing is that it is manipulative. While I'm not being manipulative.

But we talked about it in the thread. To death.

So spare me this fantasy that you were merely “responding” to something that came out of nowhere. I was reflecting your own behavior back at you in a way blunt enough for even you to understand, and somehow you still missed it. Man, you are unbelievably slow.

Yes, I did miss that. I still do.
The simple truth is that one can reasonably believe that the existence of Israel as a nation is threatened and still decry the many many many casualties among the Palestinian people at the hands of Israel. Even if you believe that Hamas could gave stopped this by releasing the hostages.

Neither side is looking good imo.

Similarly, one can believe that Iran should not have the capacity to make nuclear weapons and simultaneously believe that Trump’s incursion is uncalled for, despicable, wrong headed, and extremely ineffective and unlikely to achieve any objective except making billions of dollars for Trump's military complex donors. Oh, and killing lots of little school girls.

It's a scenario that had a lot of facts behind it in the 1980s, but really not so much in the 2020s, for all that the decision makers of today grew up with the ideas of forty years ago.

Generals are always ready to fight the last war all over again. Politicians even more so.

Mutually Assured Destruction was an effective peacekeeper in a world where two superpowers dominated everything. Now that Russia has ceased to be even a plausible great power, things are much less simple, and nuclear doctrine has changed, whether we recognise the fact or not.
Russia is not USSR. Why are you harking about earlier times? At the moment Russia just wants peace and free trade.
Generals everywhere have to be ready to fight. Politicians may seem to do so. In practice things may be different. Why Trump has not started Iran-2?
There are other players in the game too, China, for example. Why should Europe always be a slave to US? They too are powerful. They have enough bombs and missiles to blast any country to pieces, including US. Britain and France have some (290+260) 550 bombs.

Russia's attitude dates back to Catherine the Great and their desire to pretend that they are the next Rome.
Russia's attitude dates back to European assholes (Swedes, Poles, Germans, French, British) along with Turks constantly invading Russia. Catherine the Great was German in case you didn't know.
Uh huh. As I noted, the self-derived sense of Russian greatness that they are the next Rome is what drives the nonsense in barbos' posts,
Since nonsense is absent in my post I see no point to discuss its origin in Jimmy Higgins's posts.
and it dates back a very long time. And with almost nothing to show for it. The best composer of all-time in Tchaikovsky, some really depressing literature, some ballet, and good size contributions in science, when the scientists weren't busy being purged that is, but otherwise, Russia/Soviet Union has been an underperformer.
But, But, ukrs were great. Just look at all their composers, great philosophers, scientists over the last 400 thousand years.
I really don't see the connections of your random crap to anything discussed here.
Historically, Europeans have been assholes. "Guns, Germs and steel" and all that.
There is a reason the US didn't involve itself until late in the Great War. Europe had been at perpetual war for over a millenia. The horrors of WWII and the failure of the armistice of WWI would help drive the relative peace established afterwards. It certainly wasn't perfect but, it was the best the continent had seen.
Are you OK? level of non-sequitur from you is unusually high.

Better than Youtube with all these generals telling Trump to go for it?

.. but you wouldn't know that with their incredibly unmatched self-assurance of their greatness.
Who is not self-assured? US, China, India?
Technically we all got rich together after WWII. So, there is that.
What US is doing now is making itself, Europe and all the rest in the world poorer. This is lunacy.

Russia has fought in nine wars during this century alone, two of which they started by invading a sovereign nation to seize territory.
No big deal, we have fought nine wars since independence. Wars are a part of life.
Putin doesn’t have the time or resources to take Ukraine. Yet he is trying.
We all try. US is trying to take over Iran oil. India wants to get back its portions of Kashmir and Aksai Chin.

That is so far from true as to be off the planet. If Russia wants peace, they could just withdraw from Ukraine.
Ukraine became a necessity because of the machination of FBI and NATO, otherwise there would have been no Maidan uprising.
US tried just the same in Iran. US will create problems for itself and all others by trying to boss around.
I am not a dog-lover, whether they laugh, weep or howl.

And if they want free trade, they could try complying with international law so that sanctions are able to be lifted. Everything you say they want is a nonsense, as it is contradicted by the fact that they invaded Ukraine.
Ukraine became a necessity because of the machination of FBI, otherwise there would not have been the Maidan uprising. Where is Russia transgressing international law? It is a dictat by the US, that Russia compulsorily has to fight against.
None of that is intelligible. If “FBI” refers to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the claim the FBI caused the Maidan uprising is surprising because the FBI doesn’t do international work.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, its kidnapping of children and raping of women are examples of violations of international law.

Not so many for peaceful nations.

So you agree your claim that Russia doesn’t have the resources or the time was false.

I accept my mistake. Which is the US department which does the international work?
Not so many for peaceful nations.
Peace depends on conditions.
So you agree your claim that Russia doesn’t have the resources or the time was false.
It is a continuous process. Keep making, keep trying.

For greedy and war-like nations, yes, it always is.
No. Even peace-loving nations can be forced into war. Claim territory and attack.
Pakistan did it in Kashmir, China did it in Aksai Chin.
Where Pakistan and China are, to you, also examples of "Peace-loving nations"?... Like, India, Russia, and the US?

Haven’t read a paper version of WaPo in over 40 years. For a while it was actually part of my job as well as NYT, CSM, LATimes, Chicago Sun times, and a few others.

Now most of the news I read is online except for some local stuff. I rarely watch news because it stopped being ‘news’ and more half assed opinion pieces designed to create outrage a long time ago. Public television is an exception, just as public radio is fairly reliable. WaPo has gone downhill dramatically under Bezos.

For me, YouTube is to listen to music I don’t own and occasionally for fix it tutorials.

To us, Pakistan and China are not peace-loving countries. Both try to disturb peace in India, including by their terrorist connections.
It is OK. We manage to counter it, but it is a constant irritant. Chian tried Galwan intrusion in 2020, but had to retreat. Pahalgam Hindu killing in 2025 led to the four-day India/Pakistan war. That is 2 wars in five years. India is no more a push-over.

Countries haven't sent troops to Ukraine. I think its the fear of nukes that's the reason
It’s the fear of soldiers returning in body bags, not nukes.

None of the ex Warsaw pact countries have an issue with that. They understand the importance of stopping Russia. The only reason they're not sending troops to Ukraine is because Putin has thrratened with nukes.

For the rest of Europe its a mixed bag. Basically, the more they feel threatened by Russia because of geography, the more they are willing to sacrifice. Be it weapons, money or troops.

Personally I think we should commit troops. Stop being pussies. The more the nuke threat works, the more it'll be used. So in order to make that threat to not be used, we need to ignore it. I think its the least dangerous option, long term
No troops yet from anyone suggests other countries have a problem with it.

Its Putins threat of nuclear war. Its just that.
The fact as NATO members, any attack (especially NATO) would be responded to with force by NATO, including nuclear weapons, has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on their decision-making or safety from Russia. Your insight into their thinking is certainly illuminating.

Putin has threatened with nuclear strikes any country who sends troops into Ukraine to help them. He did that and the response from European countries was to not send troops. And instead make it convenient for volonteers to fight in Ukraine and sending money and material. The Europeans are doing exactly the things Putin didn't warn them against with nukes.

Its anyones guess how the reasoning has been going in the parliaments. But Ukraine's military is corrupt and dysfunctional. It would obviously be to Ukraines benefit if the high tech hardware was manned by those already trained on them.

I find the idea that Putin's nuclear threat isn't the reason for the current situation... unlikely
I understand why some people feel the need for a single cause explanation for a complex situation.

Ha ha.. lol. I love how you are trying to come across as the wise sage who has a wider horizon than us simpletons.

The Russian State Duma unanimously adopted on May 13 a bill that allows the Russian president to use Russian military forces to protect Russian citizens abroad in the event of their arrest, detention, criminal prosecution, or other legal proceedings in foreign courts.
Because peace loving nations always create a pretext to attack any country who might bring criminal proceedings against one of their citizens.
