The Justice Department is preparing to seek an indictment of former Cuban leader Raúl Castro. A criminal charge against Castro would have to be approved by a grand jury and could escalate tensions with Havana.

It would come amid rising tensions this year between President Donald Trump's administration and Cuba's government. Meanwhile, the U.S. is in the midst of an uneasy ceasefire in the U.S. war against Iran.
He's starving them out, just like Bibi is doing to Gaza (although he hasn't started bombing.....yet). I would love to see conditions in Cuba improve for the Cuban people, but through Trump is NOT THE WAY. He doesn't give a shit about Americans, he sure as hell isn't going to care about Cubans. He will make the island Epstein 2.0 and rape and pillage it dry. I fucking hate this man.

How we didn't reestablish relations with Cuba following the collapse of the Soviet Union is nothing less than a microcosm of our political system's paralysis. The Republicans need their boogeyman* and the Dems haven't been able to muster up the will to exorcise that monster under the bed.

*Is it "boogeyman" or "bogeyman"?

Stephen King uses the latter, but I grew up with the former despite it being a great song describing a disco dancing Casanova.

Obama eased restrictions on Cuba and tourism exploded. Capitalism exploded there too because of it. It was good times for the Cubans and relations between the US and Cuba improved. Then dumbass Trump came along and reinstated and enlarged the embargo. Cubans are dying because the country has great difficulty getting medical supplies. Foreign companies that have patents in the US on their products are not allowed to export to Cuba, so double whammy.

Cuba’s biggest mistake was not picking the whole island up and moving it south of Uruguay.

The Bogeyman hides under beds and scares children. The Boogeyman is a great disco-dancer.

Don't blame it on the sunshine, don't blame it on the moonlight, don't blame it on the good times, blame it on the bugge, a Middle English word that is also the root of bugbear.

I've always heard Trump (and more broadly, Republicans) is generally well liked by Cubans and Cuban Americans. The socialist leanings of many Democrats is a big turn off to those who have lived, or have relatives, in Cuba (although the enthusiasm has been somewhat muted lately by the deportation issues):

While Trump’s approval ratings have plummeted nationwide, a sweeping 67% of poll respondents said they support Trump’s handling of Cuba policy. Approval numbers were even higher for Secretary of State Marco Rubio, himself a Cuban American from Miami.

Socialist leanings? IE, they believed the BS said about the Democrats. Gov. DeSantis perfected that line. Ignoring the BS, Cuba... like every other thing, is complicated.

I find it funny in that Republicans demand reparations for the Cubans *cough American business interests* over what was taken by the Castro Regime... but then scoff at reparations for blacks in America for the slavery, race riots, Jim Crow, and Tom Hanks rapping in the credits of Dragnet.

Cuban Americans want what they had back. Effectively freeing the Cubans actually under the current regime, but cutting in line in front of the Cubans to get their distribution first.

Trump enjoys producing human suffering, as long as it’s not him. Sadistic pervert that he is, being all-powerful presidunce with the ability to punish or murder those who tell truth about him, is all he ever wanted.
What a (fucked up) guy.

America can identify specific harms suffered by all kinds of groups when seeking to provide remedies, but the moment Black Americans enter the discussion, everyone is suddenly colorblind.

I'm not familiar with what De Santis said specifically, but if you have quotes to share, feel free. More likely, Cubans, like a lot of people, got the idea that many Democrats have socialist leanings because they say so themselves. In particular, their alliance with Democratic Socialists of America (DSA, which includes the likes of AOC, Rashida Talib, Bernie Sanders, Mamdani, etc.) for example.

As far as reparations, California, run by Democrats, spent years studying it and ultimately threw in the towel. They decided no financial benefits, but there will be (was?) an apology and some unspecified consolation prize. It was all just political theatre and a big embarrasment. So, its not just Republicans scoffing. In fact, you yourself admitted here its problematic. The so-called "reparations from Cuba" are much more recent, objective, quantifiable and limited in scope, which makes them plausibily attainable. I did not know about the Tom Hanks rap though. I made the unfortunate decision to go to youtube and watch him and Dan Ackroyd rapping and dancing. For reparations here, I would be in favor of Will Smith giving those two a good slap on the face at a future Oscars award show for that horrendous and embarrassing performance.

There was a time when reparations for Black Americans were recent, measurable, and directly tied to living victims. The response wasn't, "Yes, let's do it." It was decades of new reasons not to. Today the argument is that the enslaved are dead and nobody alive was harmed by slavery. The forever moving goalpost.

Edit: BTW, reparations aren't about a fucking handout. They're about compensation for generations of labor and contributions that many minorities were never properly paid for, leaving them with little or nothing to pass on to future generations.

I don't think that word means what you think it means. And most Cubans in S Florida that are republican have no real memory of living under Batista and fled when Castro took power. Castro was never a socialist.

Cuba has a big problem getting things because suppliers like to be paid.

Yeah, that's the problem...

Yeah, that's the problem...
My point is that this is another example of the war with EastAsia.

Our actions have almost no effect on Cuba other than denying them US tourist dollars. But they provide a convenient excuse for why they are a basket case. They need us as an enemy to distract their people from their mismanagement.

Tourist dollars, corporate investment, trade....

Cuba is the US being upset about the theft of corporate wealth by the Cuban leadership that replaced the monster we liked having in power. 60 years of we won't get over it. After having supported a bunch of murderous thugs in Central and South America... as long as we got first choice on imports and they didn't take money from the Soviets.

It is time to move forward!
