The Partisan American... the real issue with American Politics

Trump saved the country from being invaded by open borders.
A bullshit Republican talking point. Biden followed the law as written. Someone that comes to the border and asks for asylum by law must be allowed to have the claim tested in immigration court. Biden also deported more people than Trump.

Trump killed the bipartisan immigration bill prior to being elected to keep the talking point for his campaign so thousands kept coming. That's on Trump, not Biden.

Somehow he still filled that promise even under the conditions he had to work with.
Easy. He broke the immigration laws to do so.
I did not know Trump broke any laws but (if true) I doubt the average American knew either. Certainly no impeachment charges were ever brought for this issue even though everything else Democrats could dream up for an impeachment were. And assuming you are correct that Trump did break a law it would appear the law itself is a problem.

Because the only obvious conclusion a reasonable person can make is that there was a serious problem, no one in Washington was getting fixed under Biden. As Trump himself said, "we did not need more laws passed we simply needed a different POTUS".
What part of bipartisan immigration bill did you not get?

If you are referring to the TARP - Congress passed it and President Bush signed it into law.

Dodd-Frank clearly failed to end “too big to fail” or to end bailouts.
Shift the goal posts? You blamed Obama for TARP which was enacted prior to his term. Dodd -Frank occurred after the bail outs.

It seems on this issue, you are grossly misinformed.
This issue?

lol. Just remember how we got here.

The Democrats could always try putting up a viable candidate next time.
True, but no one was forced to vote for Trump.
Yes, we sort of do have to vote for either the republican or democrat candidate. And neither choice makes any difference at this point because our country is really being controlled by power structures who pay both parties what they want. Regardless what the majority of the population really wants.
No, you don’t have to vote for anyone, especially someone who you think would make matters worse.

I don’t buy your conspiracy theory.
Therein lies the (a) problem.
Your voting levels are abysmal. You need to increase that. Yet you keep throw up candidates that are just so not worth voting for.

With 330 million people how do you keep finding such duds - too old, too stupid, chasing the fairies at the bottom of the garden? Rats with gold teeth we would call most of them
(And yes, Australia's track record is not too flash. We do try to find candidates that will not spook the horses, appal the ladies or scare the kiddies)

Here we go. This is the problem in America. The voter.

Biden inherits a pandemic and all of the economic issues that it creates. People are upset and his polling numbers dwindle. Dwindle so badly with an America that was certain that 2024 was worse than 2020 somehow, and elect the guy whose poll numbers dropped below 35% in 2021 because he instigated a riot at the US Capitol... and egged it on.

But that isn't my problem. My problem is that Trump has desecrated America's honor (assuming we have any) with the Iran negotiations. He went into Iran saying we'd overthrow the Government and now we are giving them $300 billion, at least, for having the plucky spirit to survive. And Trump's approval is 36%. Inflation is up solely because of his tariff and war policies. Costs are still up, not declining. Nothing has improved, rather things are worse... and he still has the support of 1 in 3 Americans. Biden wasn't the greatest President of all time, but his ratings were in the dumps because people didn't like how things were, not because Biden instigated the economy to go into the dumps by pissing off every trading partner on the planet. Things are notably worse now, and the globe is still gliding to a global energy crisis because of Trump (and Netanyahu) criminally undercalculating the Iran attacks. But the approval ratings are still about the same.

So much shit has come out of the White House, that it could be easy to forget two Americans were murdered by ICE this past winter and people thought maybe that was the first term Trump!

WTF America?!
Inflation is not up solely because of tariff or war policies. It is up because our government and the fed who is responsible for inflation wants it to be high. They need it to be high because it is the only way at this point to extinguish the US out of control spending that has accumulated over many years. By making the dollar worthless this hides taxation on the stupid savers who thought they would someday retire in dollars. But more to the point of your OP, it will make absolutely no difference which other moron in the future becomes elected. Or which tariffs or other taxation are in place because we will see non stop high inflation from this point forward. Austerity of any form is politically unacceptable. And it is either austerity or inflation from this point forward to survive the debt that has accumulated.
Not this... you know what. Never mind. You have never listened.
Inflation is not taxation or spending money on wars. Those actions might cause prices to rise but that is not inflation. Inflation is the reduction of the dollars buying power. Caused only by our government printing more currency.
You are stunningly incorrect. I confess that it is my fault that I continue to be stunned by your lack of knowledge and understanding and that is on me. You have proven your lack of knowledge and understanding countless times. I should know better.

Here is a pretty simple discussion of inflation and its causes:

What are the causes of inflation?

Inflation is linked to three factors: demand, supply, and inflation expectations. There can be positive or negative developments in these factors, but generally one or more of these factors is at work when inflation increases or decreases. When these factors are not putting upward or downward pressure on inflation, inflation is equal to its underlying level, which usually measures about 2 percent.

Inflation can increase when growing demand outstrips changes in the supply of goods and services. Economists call this “demand-pull inflation.”

Another source of higher inflation, known as “cost-push inflation,” occurs when the cost of producing these goods and services rises notably or when they can’t be produced in sufficient quantities to meet demand.

Inflation also depends on people’s expectations about where it will be in the future. These expectations influence economic decisions, and this, in turn, affects inflation.

To make this discussion clearer, we illustrate the causes of inflation by using examples that focus on a change in the price level. However, it is important to remember that inflation involves ongoing increases in the price level.
You are expecting the fed to be telling the truth??

The government lies to us all the time. And even if you don't think the government lies to us, it is utterly ridiculous on your part to make a rebuttal of my accusation of the fed based on a report coming......from the fed. That's like telling the hen should read the fox report to feel informed, blessed and relieved the fox will not steal any eggs!

Of course the government and fed is going to blame anyone and anything else but themselves for inflation.

What I posted were definitions of what causes inflation. You seem totally ignorant of what causes inflation. I thought, foolishly, it seems, that you could actually read and understand that economists know and understand what causes inflation. You do not.

Yes, I do expect that the Fed is staffed by well educated and well trained economists who are significantly more familiar with the causes of inflation than.....you are with your zero credentials other than your personal opinion.

You truly do not know or understand much at all about economics. It is frightening that you think you do but seem to have zero basis except maybe you read it on a youtube or something.

You are an unserious person.

I'm very serious about my retirement. And also very lucky now owning real assets (such as homes and farmland) acquired over many years that have also appreciated an enormous amount over the years. If I would have saved cash in the banks over the years and listened to what the fed was telling us I know I would be much worse off now.

Being paranoid and not trusting the fed or the government has served me very well so far. And at this point late in life I would rather be called stupid than be broke and enlightened as everyone else is.

You are obviously uninterested in learning anything.

Words have meaning, economic terms such as inflation have definitions. Having a shared understanding of what words and terms mean helps us to share ideas and understanding.

You are not interested in that.

Much luck to you.

I totally agree with you that an increase in the money supply is what causes inflation and I have said the same. Keep the money supply constant and the dollar buys the same goods and services.

(From Tony's post above:)
"Another source of higher inflation, known as “cost-push inflation,” occurs when the cost of producing these goods and services rises notably or when they can’t be produced in sufficient quantities to meet demand".
Doesn't sound like an increase in money supply. Sounds more like the fed attempting to blame inflation on the producer!

Inflation can increase when growing demand outstrips changes in the supply of goods and services. Economists call this “demand-pull inflation.”
Hold the money supply constant and this will not cause inflation. Because the temporary increase of price will then cause the supplier to supply more goods which will cause the price to lower again. Supply and demand at work in a capital market.

Inflation also depends on people’s expectations about where it will be in the future. These expectations influence economic decisions, and this, in turn, affects inflation.
More puppet making done by the fed to shift blame to everyone else for inflation (which they caused by increasing the money supply).

Doesn't sound like an increase in money supply. Sounds more like the fed attempting to blame inflation on the producer!
That IS a form of inflation.

A drought causes a shortage of wheat causing the cost of bread made from that wheat to rise. That is inflation that has absolutely nothing to do with the money supply.

Temporary inflation is still inflation.

Inflation also depends on people’s expectations about where it will be in the future. These expectations influence economic decisions, and this, in turn, affects inflation.
More puppet making done by the fed to shift blame to everyone else for inflation (which they caused by increasing the money supply).
Wow! You cannot really be this dense.

Inflation basically is the cost of goods, services, etc., increasing. That's it. Nothing more. The reason for costs rising are many and varied. It's not just caused by increasing the supply of money.

Here we go. This is the problem in America. The voter.

Trump_approval-June22.jpg

The explanation from the Cleveland Fed is standard economic analysis.

The effect of increases in the money supply on inflation in standard economic analysis manifests in increases in demand.

I find it incredible that you take the word of Trump while doubting the Fed.
I totally agree with you that an increase in the money supply is what causes inflation and I have said the same. Keep the money supply constant and the dollar buys the same goods and services.
Standard economic analysis indicates that over longer periods of time, inflation tends to be monetary phenomenon. However, over shorter periods of time, other factors can influence inflation).

Cost-push inflation is a well-recognized and accepted cause of inflation. The oil price shock of the 1970s is the classic example.

Sorry, but inflationary expectations do play a part. When firms expect more inflation, it may cause them to accept higher prices in long term contracts. Inflationary expectations tend to get influence longer term interest rates. And it can cause changes in current purchasing decisions.

So your continual derails about compulsory voting would admittedly not solve the issue with candidate options?

Hey, don't knock on Australia. You know all their politicians are perfectly sublime. They have mandatory voting so it must be so.

Yeah, he's that dense. He read a youtube or something so of course he knows more than anyone who has degrees in economics or finance or anything, really.

As we no longer live in a world where money only exists as a physical entity, such as a coin or a banknote, it should be noted that the Fed does not directly control money supply; The vast majority of money creation comes from lending by commercial and investment banks, not the Fed.

The Fed has some influence over this major element of money supply, through the setting of interest rates; But this is not control in the direct sense.

If people want money badly enough, they will borrow it even if interest rates are high, causing inflation. If people have money but nowhere they want to invest it, they will use it to pay down debt even if interest rates are low, reducing inflation.

Most of the money in existence today is numbers in computers. There is no hard limit to the amount that exists, and while the Fed can generate extra money, they are far from the only (or even the biggest) source of new money generation in the economy.

Of course, money creation is only half of the money supply issue (and money supply is only a small part of the inflation issue). Money supply is also influenced by money destruction. Repayment of debt destroys money. Federal taxation also destroys money.

The Fed can encourage debt repayment by raising interest rates, but they have only limited influence over how much debt is repayed (and therefore how much money is destroyed) as a result. A more direct way to reduce money supply is through raising taxes. Am I to presume that RVonse is lobbying for large increases in federal taxation, to fight inflation?

Or is he just a simpleton, pining for the long gone days when money was simple, and easy to understand (albeit dreadful for the economy)?

Back in the good old days, money supply was the same thing as the gold supply, so inflation happened whenever miners had a big strike that supplied more gold than economic growth could absorb; And more commonly, deflation happened whenever the economy tried to grow because of a new innovation, because nobody could magically create extra gold to match the new economic reality.

We had a nice, simple, easy to understand economy for a thousand years; It was called the Middle Ages, and nobody thinks that going back to a medieval way of life is particularly attractive. But the only alternative is an economy that's hard to understand, and simpletons hate stuff that they have to think hard about. So they just pretend that things are still simple, and they just mindlessly drag us back towards a medieval economy, with its medieval lifestyle.

Biden followed the law as written. Someone that comes to the border and asks for asylum by law must be allowed to have the claim tested in immigration court.
The asylum law needs to be fundamentally changed. It is being abused by millions who just want to migrate for economic reasons. We see the same thing happening with millions of asylum seekers flooding into Europe, where it becomes nearly impossible to deport them.
Biden also deported more people than Trump.
If true, then it surely is because far more people entered under his watch.

Had to comment on this bit:
When it comes to moving away from carbon the only thing that matters is the whole world which has nothing to do with Trump.
Since the US is a major player and emitter, it does matter.
While US is a major emitter, RVonse is right that even if US were to slash our emissions drastically, it would not matter unless the whole world does it - especially large middle-income emitters like China and India.

Well, the same felony, just repeatedly. Had he just written a normal check....
Even worse, the same misdemeanor, for which Alvin Bragg used questionable legal tricks to elevate to felony status to get around the statute of limitations.

It was obviously a political prosecution, since it is pretty obvious that the DA would not have gone this far to prosecute somebody who was not a political enemy for this. In the end, the hush money prosecution made Trump more popular and helped him get reelected.
