Honest talk about the cost of being ugly

Here’s a weird thing about people. Most of us are not 9’s or 10’s or even 1’s or 2’s — for those of us who adhere to these juvenile, nonsensical indices. Most of us are somewhere in the middle, roughly,

Yet people get together and make more people, and even love each into old age when they look wrinkled and often grotesque.

Lincoln famously said, “The good lord must have loved the common-LOOKING people, since he made so many of them.” The “looking” part is commonly omitted from the “common” quote.

During one of his 1858 debates with Steven Douglas, Lincoln, whom Douglas had accused of being two-faced, responded with his customary wit: “If I had another face, do you think I’d be wearing this one?”

I think what you and Southern Hybrid are confused about is stuff you are projecting onto what he's saying.

He's not talking about human worth. He's not saying that we should care about looks. He's acknowleging that its a thing and that it affects us. Pretending that it doesn't isn't helping. Its like denying racism exists because we don't like racism. It doesn't help.

FYI, women are rarely attracted to bodybuilders.
Indeed, one thing women hate are muscles. That is why women only try to pick guys up at ComicCons.

I think the question to ask, assuming "women are rarely attracted to bodybuilders" is accurate, is why they are not. It most likely isn't looks that are the issue, which is apparently what you are thinking it is about.

Of course, "looks matter". What the response generally is, is that "looks aren't all that matters". Charisma, attitude, empathy are going to come into play, much like apathy, narcissism, and vanity can as well.
That's not why they do it. They are vain. But its not about attracting the opposite gender for sex or love. It has the opposite effect.
You almost appear to grasp it in the thread. It wouldn't be looks that are the problem, but the vanity.
Women like a muscular build, but not to the extreme of a body builder. The reason I've heard is that the big muscles implies the guy is excessively vain and self absorbed.
Like I said... not about looks. The video sounds like it is a "why it is them and not me" self gratification.

I'd say that's pure projection on your part.

My conclusion so far from this thread is that its a too sensitive topic and too triggering for people to be able to have adult conversations about it.

Its like people (more than usual) are bending over backwards to find words or sentances they can go off on a tangent, of righteous indignation, over.

It comes across as a desperate attempt to steer the conversation away from something emotionally real and authentic, to something at an emptional distance.

It brings to mind theological lectures on Christanity, defining it as a gnostic religion. Ie, the material world is bad, and only the spiritual world is good. Caring about material things is shameful. I'm guessing this is what is happening? People raised in a culturally Christian environment feeling shame about that they care about superficial things, and feel the need to either reject it or explain it away.

Its ok to like beautiful things and people. It doesn't make you bad. It makes you normal and healthy.

Z In our modern liberal society it is whatever floats your boat. If for you it is watching sleazy garrulous bizarre sex that is up to you. You do not have to justify it to me.

Isn't that peak Voltaire? The God of liberalism?

What I said was there are moral implications as to how porn is made and who runs it in the background.

Which makes porn on par with everything else produced in our capitalist paradigm.

Pye Jakobsson, the leader of Rose Alliance (swedish union of sex workers) pointed out that the only group of people we demand enjoys themselves at work are sex workers. Everyone else is expected to just power through. Its odd

Same with illegal drugs. If you buy cocaine once in a while you may think it is no big deal, but the people at the top are brutal vicious drug cartels, who you are funding.

But the person who buys the drugs is morally in the clear. 100% of the guilt for that lies on the politicians who made it illegal and the people who voted for it. That's my opinion.

I agree that its a moral crime. I think you've just identified the wrong culprit.

You can chose to be amoral and concern yourself only with your immediate gratification.

And this all leads to a thread on moral philosophy.

Yes. Civilisation is founded on delayed gratification. But delaying gratification only has value if you, at some point, do get gratified.

My conclusion so far from this thread is that its a too sensitive topic and too triggering for people to be able to have adult conversations about it.

My conclusion so far from this thread is that you don’t know what you are talking about. But that is par for the course.
Also your pretentious and petty use of the empty word “triggering.”

The fact is that there is no one-size-fits-all body type attraction, and any mature adult knows this.

People who go to IT conferences and speak in terms of those who “hot babes,” “overweight,” and “ugly” are people who should be shunned.

So what went wrong when the feminists conducted the studies in the early 90'ies? There's obviously a mismatch between what women say they want in studies, and what they show they want in porn consumption. The problem was how the studies were done. There's strong social pressure on women to say they don't like violent or degrading porn, even when they do.

So why does anyone like violent and degrading porn? Well... that's something for psychologists and sociologists to figure out. I don't think there's an easy answer.
Thought here: rape fantasy is extremely common. Related?

Its even the most common sex fantasy of women, by far.

I like Dan Savage's theory on that. Its a mental get out of jail free card to fantasize about whatever she wants. You're not a slut if its rape. And women can get touchy about feeling like sluts. Its a theory.

A standard feature about these rape fantasies is that the rapists, by tremendous coincidence, do all the favourite things the women are into, she has a massive orgasm and the men are super hot.

So I think its probably best to put these fantasies in the "not really rape" category

Reminds me of that story of an Australian beetle that was going extinct because the males prefered trying to mate with a specific kind of beer bottle, that mimicked something found in beetle females, and was the most optimised version of it. So they ditched the girls and headed for the bottles.
Yeah, nah, they were just copying the behaviour of all the rest of the Aussie males.

Hmm ... DrZ is expressing his deep fantasy of raping women? They want to be raped, right?

Maybe they deserve to be raped, right?

It has filte3red down to school kids. Groups of boys sexual assaulting a girl.

I think it was late 1990s early 2000s when somebody produced a video game regretted at kids where you got points for raping a girl.

As has been reported net porn exposure with kids without the ability to filter it. Kids are monkey see monkey do.
Adults can be the same.

It is not a tirvial or academic debate.

My fantasy is castrating men who sexually prey on defenseless kids. That is part of the reason my views on porn has changed. Part of net porn is young girls who are claimed to be 18 or older looking like 14 or 15 being sexually abused by older men. Gang rape.

The OP does say an honest look .....

My experience with "ugly" men as someone who is at times "shallow":

Everyone I have ever seen call themselves ugly has been reasonably physically attractive. The guy in the video is "reasonably physically attractive".

Of those who call themselves ugly, maybe 20% of them smell bad and have poor grooming habits.

In addition, 90+% of them have bad personalities: poor impulse control, extremely shallow demands for "beauty", believe they should have true authority in a relationship, or have some other major issues.

Further, when my husband encounters the same "ugly" people, he will call them "ugly" insultingly to their face, but only AFTER these things become apparent.

The thing is, "ugly" from a large (majority?) of the population does not mean unattractive, it means you behave in an ugly way.
People want to pretend looks don't matter.

Establishing that they are not an absolute barrier doesn't establish that they don't matter.

And the reality is that people unconsciously equate looks with trustworthiness.

Looks do not give success, they give far more chances to try for success.
The more you care about someone, the less you care about their physical appearance. Wait, that’s not true: the more you care about someone, the more beautiful they look to you.

Also, the more you need someone ( or their services) the less important their physical appearance is. Do we care if our plumber is a 10? Or a 5? We probably don’t care if he has terrible BO.

We do care of our medical professionals appear to have good personal hygiene and se to be in good health. We do not care if they would look good on a calendar.

Here's a good one from Mike Israetel. He's a pretty devisive guy. And he's a body builder. So obviously he's talking from being in the shallow end of humanity. But stuff like this matters, regardless of how deep you are.

Thoughts? I think he's right on the money

LOL. Being a body builder is the "shallow end of humanity"?! That cracked me up. Sorry for derail. I will watch your video soon. At age 50 I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic, 50 pounds overweight, high blood pressure, no self esteem, and struggling at work. I turned to fitness. Now I'm 60: strongest that I've ever been (benched 325 last week at my age!); eating healthy. I take no drugs: but all my numbers are great: blood pressure great, and etc. I've never felt better. Anyway, I'll watch your vide and get back!!...

That's great! I only watched about 2 minutes of the stupid video. It's about the "Brutal reality of being ugly" It's over 35 minutes long. Don't waste your time. I hate watching videos and Z could have least summed up what the video was about. Besides, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" a wise author said hundreds of years ago.

But it isn't. It just isn't. Its such a mean thing to say.

If someone isn't attractive and is told that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then not only are they physically unatrative, can't do anything about it and its their fault for having an unpleasant personality.

I never tell anyone what they look like. I was simply noting that what one person thinks is ugly, another might find attractive or not be bothered by the physical appearance of that person. There are plenty of unattractive men who are married to attractive women because most women are not simply attracted to men due to their physical appearance. When we met, I was not physically attracted to my husband of 44 years due to his appearance. I was attracted to him due to his sense of humor, intelligence, generosity and affectionate nature. That is my point.

As time went on, I found his appearance to be more attractive, probably because I love him. Judging someone by their physical appearance is wrong imo. Beauty is subjective, but of course, I would never tell someone that as a way to comfort them if they thought of themselves as ugly.

I saw what most people would call a very ugly woman in a restaurant last week. She was also very obese. Her partner was a fairly decent looking man and he wasn't obese. They were an older couple and had probably been together for a long time, so maybe there is no brutality of being ugly as how we perceive the appearance of others varies and as the saying goes, "love is blind". People can be happy with their mate regardless of their physical appearance. Do you not understand that? Plus we don't all age well. I've been lucky, but I know plenty of people who haven't aged well. One friend who is very over weight started taking GLP drugs because her husband told her he loves her so much and he is worried that her obesity might lead to health problems that will leave him widowed and he doesn't want to live without her. That's love.

How's any of this relevant to anything in the video? Obviously what you're saying is true. I'm sure Mike Israetel would agree.

And you do tell people how they look. Not with words. But certainly with your eyes and attention. People notice. And your ability to signal this is mostly out of your conscious control.

I've dated some extremely beautiful women in my life. Its like they're living on a different planet. All the social rules are different for them. They also have other problems, that less attractive women couldn't relate to.

Women in general are from, (my male perspective) preposterously superficial and love being associated with beautiful women. I don't understand the behaviour. But its bloody obvious that its a thing.

Women are less picky when it comes to what men they sleep with. But quite superficial in with what women they are seen hanging out with.

But even if women care more about other qualities than looks in a man, they'd still prefer it if he was hot. Why wouldn't they?

Any woman who would challenge that I'd call a liar

I can honestly say that I disagree with just about every word you wrote.

And I can honestly say that I don’t give a rats ass what your opinion is.

Stop this nonsense. Engage with the discussion or stfu. If you have nothing intelligent to say its better to be silent

It has filte3red down to school kids. Groups of boys sexual assaulting a girl.

I think it was late 1990s early 2000s when somebody produced a video game regretted at kids where you got points for raping a girl.

Complete nonsense. Video games impact on kids behaviour has been extensively studied. Its zero effect. It turns out children are able to tell fact from fiction.

We studied 80's video violence back in tje day. Same result

Rock music. Also did not make us violent or anti-social.

Its just moral panic

Even if such a game existed, it would more likely be about the naughty thrill of playing a game they know is taboo, so re-enforcing the opposite behaviour of actually raping anyone.

As has been reported net porn exposure with kids without the ability to filter it. Kids are monkey see monkey do.
Adults can be the same.

It is not a tirvial or academic debate.

Sure. But we live in a sex negative culture where we don't educate kids on how to have sex. Porn is usually the ONLY teacher for how to do it.

How else are they supposed to learn, if not from porn? That was certainly true for me.

And again, kids have no problem separating fact from fiction. Only the mentally deficient don't understand that porn is staged and there's plenty off camera that is important. Like asking for consent.

But today its better then ever. There's loads of sex educational festivals all over Europe. Its a growing trend. I've been teaching at some of these.

Iksk in Berlin is great

Stuff like this didn't exist when I was young. And boy would I have needed it.

Kids want to learn this stuff and are proactively making an effort to compensate for the failures of parents

I don't know how it is in USA. But I'd be surprised if something similar didn't exist over there

I'll be 70 in October. My wife has a 40-something friend who was visiting the Lab when I took a call from the Red Cross, asking if I could work at a shelter for people displaced by the recent flooding. Unfortunately, it was 200 miles away, so I had to decline. After I walked out, friend says to wife, "That's hot".
What's hot?
"He volunteers for the Red Cross."

After nearly 60 years of wondering what constituted hotness, that was one I never considered, but it's nice to know I still have it.

I imagine you think you are being clever or povacative. As I said there is nothing you can do or say that will get a rise out of me. I have seen ad been around a lot. Your comments on women and references to women in the workplace tells me something about you.

Nothing sexual. I don't get a hard on from violence or inflicting pain. Anger at sexual abuse.

Epstein was very much an open secret.

Personalty I think adults dealing drugs to kids should have their throats cut and their bodies dumped in the gutter to for rat food. Same with those sex trafficking minors.

In the 60s when I was 17 I was walking around with a black kid I knew scoring heroin, he had a habit. No one was home so we went into the bathroom and locked the door. I witched him cook and fix. I watched his eyes roll and his knees wobble.L Last I heard after high school he was murdered in prison.

Over the last five yeas I have seen the misery of drug use on our doorsteps let alone around Seattle. There have been recent busts of organized sex trafficking minors. It is routine in Seattle on Aurea Avenue. Singss catching adults trying to lire kids online.

Seattle is a known hub for sex and human trafficking due to its major port status and location along Interstate 5 . Law enforcement actively conducts stings, outreach, and investigations to dismantle these networks and rescue minors.

So the next time yp0u watch porn think about the conditions under which the women might be. if you even have the capacity to care.

You're the one who brought up cutting rapists balls off in a conversation on sexual fantasies. If that isn't a sexual fantasy you have, then why did you bring it up?

And we're talking about studies on women's sexual fantasies. Which hardly applies to you. Does it?

This is the predictable result from making it illegal. In practice its deregulating it completelty and letting criminals manage the market. What a surprise that didn't work out *sarcasm*

I think the current situation is entirely self inflicted.

Adults dealing drugs to kids are addicts themselves. Its sick people. We wouldn't cut the throats of people with lung cancer just because it was self inflicted due to smoking.

I find your lack of compassion for sick people disturbing.

If you support the current war on drugs paradigm I think you have part of the guilt for that kid taking heroin and getting murdered in prison. You say yourself he was an addict who ended up in prison.
Addictions usually have an underlying psychological problem. Addiction is a medical problem. Not legal. These people need help. Not you hunting them with a knife threatening to kill them. Its that attitude that has led to the current catastrophical situation.

I suggest you look up the anti drug policy named "harm reduction".

Anyway.. its a derail.

So the next time yp0u watch porn think about the conditions under which the women might be. if you even have the capacity to care.

Why is this comment relevant? What makes you think I don't care?

There's very little money in porn. Those who do make the big money are dedicated and have to work hard for it. They have to work hard.

I'm not saying nobody gets forced today. But the idea that, today, there's any money in forcing women to do porn is a fantasy. It was a problem in the 80'ies. It was a big problem with Russian and East European girls after the fall of USSR. But now the world has changed. That world is gone.

Porn and cam girls are not the same thing. Women and children forced to perform sexual acts on camera for a client is unfortunately a problem. But that's a completely different industry and a different world. I'd say conflating them is just dishonest debating.

And finally, most cam girls are just women working for themselves. The cam girl market that is problematic is a tiny sliver of that market.

I have an ex who wanted to become a cam girl. I saw the whole process, what she had to do to get into the business. She stopped working with it because it was too hard work. She made much more money having a regular job. And she was highly motivated.

Porn or cam girling is NOT easy money.

No money in porn? Maybe for some poor girl geting a few dolars to be gang raped. Distribution of porn is lucrative. Money laundering.

Look at major porn sites, sign up for a fee. Advertising on porn sites.

Like I said if you are defending porn that is your moral choice. No need for lengthy rationalizations.

My position and reasons are clear.

Clearly state your position.

As to war on drugs, I think we are too rsestrained. As much as I dislike Trump, I support the aggressive actions against drug smuggling. I share he guilt? More bullshit excuses to caver you drug use?

Putting poison up your nose is not just a personal choice. You are fundng the brutal psychopath drug cartels. We all have to pay for the medical and mental health consequences of drugs.

Drugs and alcohol are major health care cost drivers.

Maturity is knowing better than to ask that question.

Like I said, its a huge market. But there's so many girls who want to be porn actresses. In business speak, the supply side is saturated.

There's so many girls who are both highly motivated and very much willing to do porn that it makes no sense, in today's market, to force girls into it. So I am skeptical it happens. I think its mostly just a trope. Stories being shared to trigger well meaning people into getting upset

Its not rape if everyone taking part is consenting

Distribution of porn is lucrative. Money laundering. Look at major porn sites, sign up for a fee. Advertising on porn sites.

FYI, almost all streaming sites are daughter companies to Pornhub. They completely dominate the market. The few sites that aren't owned and run by Pornhub use porn hub to advertise their content.

Pornhub gives so good rates, its impossible to compete, except for special interest sites.

A huge shift is that has happened the last 20 years is that porn production companies are almost all gone. The few that are remaining are all going bankrupt. Or double as nightclubs. Like Kit Kat club in Berlin. Or Kink.com in San Francisco.

Today porn actresses are self employed, own their own material, and are completely autonomous, and are the people who organise the shoot. Zero overhead. They get to keep all profits. That's the standard porn performer today.

Sasha Grey was the trailblazer and everyone copied her model.

Their biggest problem is too many actresses. Too few eyeballs. Its a tough competition.

Add to that the amateur porn industry. These are women who make and share porn for free. It's an absolutely huge movement. The girls trying to make a living from porn need to compete with all the girls who just make porn for fun as a hobby.

And then there's the gay porn scene. Completely different market and different rules

Like I said if you are defending porn that is your moral choice. No need for lengthy rationalizations.

My position and reasons are clear.

Clearly state your position.

I'm so confused now. I don't understand what conversation you think we're having? My position on what? Who's defending what? I don't understand what you are for or against?

I'm not defending anything. I just happen to have a good insight into the porn industry. Two of my exes are porn actresses. I just know a lot about the industry

I don't work in porn btw

Some questions might be why you think discussing porn is so important, or why it is so important to discuss some blockhead’s valorization of vanity, or why you care about the alleged way that gay people talk.

Can you possibly be more shallow? Is there some bottom to it?

Maybe you should get back to praising ethnic cleansing and genocide against the Gazans.
