Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

A local DTV station has been running the old Thin Man movies. William Powell and Myrna Loy.

Past generations, it used to be called screwball comedy. The orthogonal Thin Man is one of my favorite movies.

A happy drunk ex police detective marries into money and gets dragged into a murder mystery.

The kind of whitey dialogue you do not see today. The final scene where the murderer is revealed is priceless.
Original not orthogonal ...

A Samurai in Time.

Not a new concept but interesting from a Japanese perspective.

Also, got me involved to the point that I spent some anxious moments hoping this samurai from the past wouldn't slaughter a bunch of extras, out of habit.

The Last House

If you feel like you've been making too many good decisions lately and you're worried that your streak is about to end, then get out ahead of your imminent bad luck and watch this movie. Surely the universe will call it even and your good decision making can continue.

I watch a lot of movies and many are so dull I only remember that I've seen them when I turn the movie on, having forgot that I'd already watched it.

I will not forget this one.

I had to keep watching because I was compelled to see how dumb it would get; and the movie absolutely did not disappoint. They indeed saved the best for last. By that I mean that the ending somehow managed to top all the stupidity that came before it; a piece de resistance that's only equal could be found in a cat litter box that hasn't been changed in a month.

Fuck Off/10

Sky Sharks -2020 - German movie, that was kickstarted like Iron Sky (another German movie about Nazis).
One of the main stars, and also an executive producer, is Eva Habermann, who was the original Zev in Lexx series.
It features former Nazi scientists, zombie Nazi super-soldiers, and cybernetic mutant flying sharks.
It is entertaining, and features lots of female nudity, and violence.
Many reviewers on IMDB give it a rating of 1, but there are many worse movies. I have seen many times on IMDB that the majority of movies and TV series have a wide range of ratings, and the people who give low ratings invariably say the acting was bad, while those who give high ratings say the acting is good. Of course perceptions of quality have a large subjective nature. I would say it rates about 4 or 5.

That was the one that involved the moon, right? I think I saw that with some mates and all of us couldn't stop making Wolfenstein references. I think we all had a lot of fun joking about that movie than actually watching that movie.

Evil Dead Burn

It's a solid entry in the franchise; certainly better than Evil Dead Rise.

It starts off a little shaky but really picks up and manages to keep the pace going until the end of the third act, where unfortunately it kinda goes to pot. However, it doesn't ruin what came before it. There are also some well done humorous moments that Rise lacked.

The Evil Dead franchise is still the best in horror by a long ways. However, given the post credit scenes, of which there are two, it appears that there are going to be sequels featuring Rise and Burn characters. It sucks because part of what keeps these movies going is the challenge of having to come up with new ways to keep old things interesting.

If you like horror, you'll like this one. If you don't like horror, then don't watch. It's quite gory and violent.

Yes. It also has a sequel that is fun to watch.

Obsession
I made it to bodily fluids on the living room rug.
This is not entertainment.
Definitely NSFCL
I've still got a few hours left on my rental. Maybe I'll try and finish it.

The Suicide Squad

IMO, this is the best superhero flick made in the last 6-7 years. It's funny, unpredictable, and has a lot of heart. There's a lot of splatter gore, but it's all in good fun. It also doesn't take itself seriously, which really adds to its watchability. I'd seen it before, but it had been a long time. It still holds up really well.

Normal

Watched it because it is set in Minnesota. The characters are not terribly Minnesotan, but Bob Odenkirk is excellent as the imperturbable interim sheriff in small town where a bank robbery sets off a chain of increasingly violent and gory events.
I thought it is was a fun viewing experience, and it is only 90 minutes long.

Amelia's Children

Mother has some kind of psychic power, but still gets one of her babies stolen. Stolen baby grows up to be guy who discovers he has twin brother in Portugal. Guy goes to Portugal to meet his long last family.

It starts off interesting, but at almost exactly the 15 minute mark it turns into Generic Horror Film.

I don't know how these films get greenlit. It's humdrum, uninteresting and predictably so.

Hellraiser (1987) and War Machine (2026), are two movies I watched yesterday.

Hellraiser is considered a classic, and it is alright. The nature of the monsters is interesting, as they can't be classified in conventional terms as evil. The real villain is a human, Frank (though he has become a monster). 6/10.

War Machine is entertaining throughout, and has elite soldiers on a special exercise that encounter an alien large killer robot. The war machine resembles a BattleMech. The first ten minutes provides traumatic background for main character (played by Alan Ritchson), and then have twenty minutes of people training to be Rangers, which maintains interest. Then have main body of story. The ending has a kind of twist that is a logical outcome. 6/10.

Attack of the Giant Leeches, 1959. Did the fast forward up to each leech scene, the effects were all I wanted to see. They did fake dynamite a leech pond and there was a wet t-shirt scene that got by the sensors.

Rate: The effects were what I expected, good for a laugh, thing from my youth.

Jules

Elderly man with diminishing mental faculties has alien spaceship crash in his backyard and he and two other elderly people develop a relationship with the alien.

This is a good, solid movie. It's sweet, sad, funny at times; it really does run the gamut of emotions and does it well. It also does an excellent job of subverting expectations throughout the film; not in big Oh my god!" ways, but in more intelligent, subtle, and creative ways. The primary themes throughout are the sad realities of aging and the fracture of families over time.

It stars Ben Kingsley and Jane Curtain.

I read the reviews on this film and many called it lightweight. I vehemently disagree because the underlying themes are indeed heavy. My kids are adults now and I've seen this happen in my own life and the lives of so many others. I have to think that those critics are too young to get what this movie is about. Sorry if there's no gigantic robot fights or imminent takeover of planet earth and lots of explosions instead of the film being one of personal reckoning. I highly recommend this movie.

Finally, it's on Tubi so you don't have to subscribe to any streaming services to see it.

Patton Oswalt: Tea and Scotch

I don't know if this counts as a movie, but I paid $1.99 on Amazon for it, so whatever.

The man has not lost his touch. I laughed from start to finish. There's one bit that sags a little, but even that was solid.
