Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

The Suicide Squad

IMO, this is the best superhero flick made in the last 6-7 years. It's funny, unpredictable, and has a lot of heart. There's a lot of splatter gore, but it's all in good fun. It also doesn't take itself seriously, which really adds to its watchability. I'd seen it before, but it had been a long time. It still holds up really well.

Itch

I do this for you people. I take the risk of watching shitty movies so that you don't have to and I never get a word of thanks.

This is a low budget, poorly acted, poorly written, poorly filmed abomination that looks like someone's dad gave them some money for a community college introductory film school project.

Had this exact same movie been made in 1991, it would've been on MST3K's shortlist.

1/10

You're welcome.

Attack of the Giant Leeches, 1959. Did the fast forward up to each leech scene, the effects were all I wanted to see. They did fake dynamite a leech pond and there was a wet t-shirt scene that got by the sensors.

Rate: The effects were what I expected, good for a laugh, thing from my youth.

I saw that a few years back. Sorta fun and campy. I just now read about the hot actress (Yvette Vickers) in the movie. She was Playboy Playmate of the Month in July 1959. Fast forward to 2011 when she was found dead in her house by her neighbor. Forensic scientists estimated she may have been dead as long as a year before she was discovered. Must be a little weird to be on top of the world one minute only to end up a forgotten nobody later on.

Obsession
I made it to bodily fluids on the living room rug.
This is not entertainment.
Definitely NSFCL
I've still got a few hours left on my rental. Maybe I'll try and finish it.
My wife put this one on her want to watch list. Am I in trouble?

As I reflect upon my eight years of marriage in the nineties, I would say, do your duty without complaint.

It's the best horror movie of the year and it's an excellent movie regardless of genre.

Mother Mary

A famous singer/pop idol returns to her original wardrobe designer for a new dress. They have a rocky history and things supernatural may or may not ensue.

Man, Anne Hathaway can weep. I actually asked Google if someone can suffer dehydration from crying too much in a day. The answer was no, but I was still worried about Ms. Hathaway's electrolyte levels.

Anyway, it starts off promising but just kind of fizzles out. Both of the main characters are rich and famous and the only things at stake are their relationship and Hathaway's fame. The thing about the relationship is that neither need each other; they'll be fine either way. As for Hathaway's character's fame, it's hard to feel that much sympathy for someone whose life is still going to be worry-free when it comes to things financial regardless of the movie's eventual outcome.

This movie is truly an example of Rich People Problems.

The flick serves as a metaphor for all kinds of things, but they're not done well and they're too on the nose.

See it or not.

The Imitation Game - A wonderfully fictional portrayal about Alan Turing. 3.5 of 4 for drama, 0.5 of 4 for accuracy. The Goes Wrong Show's episode The Pilot, Not The Pilot was almost as accurate.

The following are the accurate portrayals in the film:
  • Alan Turing existed and was a brilliant mathematician, he was also gay
  • There was a "WWII" and "Germany" were the bad guys
  • Alan Turing was involved with trying to break enigma
That is about it. There should be a law that requires close to completely fictional historic fictional dramas to have a documentary included as a parallel release or maybe a subtitled/secondary track that follows the film and notes when stuff is exaggerated, made up, or completely bullshit.

The History Channel sometimes trys to cash in on recent movies by running relevant documentaries. I wouldn't be surprised if they were running a doc on Turing now.

For all those "Hanoi Jane" people STFU!!
Meh, her behaviour in Vietnam had bugger-all long term impact on anything, regardless of whether any of the rumours or allegations had the slightest relationship with reality.

She is, however, likely the single individual most responsible for climate change.

The only mitigating circumstances are her abject ignorance and best intentions, but to me that's not a sufficient excuse.

Totally Killer

A girl goes back in time to 1987 to stop a serial killer. This is a fun horror-comedy that really nails part of the 80s culture. Some of the slang slips into current territory, but overall they get it and the attitude(s) right without casting aspersions on the time in which it takes place. The movie has fun twists and turns and it is what it is and doesn't pretend otherwise. It wasn't released in theaters but hit the #1 spot on Amazon.

Sting of Death (MST3k episode 1 this year) - The riff was awesome. The film... did people make money off these awful films? Clearly they kept costs low. The movie was barely even one dimensional. Apparently however, if you show enough covered butts moving around to a cheesy Neil Sekada song, that might be enough to get people in the door... in the 60s. Everything from the "costume" to the "plot" was cheap as could be. To give it a metaphor, it is to cinema as stormtroopers are to aiming.

A Dangerous Man (Rifftrax) - Steven Siegel headlines in this straight to streaming cinema effort. It tells a very lazy story about a man who apparently didn't kill a man who attacked his wife but went to prison for it, but then gets out because of DNA evidence, of which I would guess they needed to film him 14 times to stop him reading out DNA as a word. His wife left him shortly before getting out, so all he gets to see is half-naked memory of her topside.

This guy is about as powerful as Captain America despite his rather bulbous and slow body (yes, he isn't in his 20s anymore, but Harrison Ford wasn't a potato in the last Indiana Jones movie either). The action film feels like something Pete Hegseth wrote (co-wrote with Siegel?... and then I kick that guy's ass, and then another guy comes in and I kick his ass...). The best part of the film is that Siegel teams with the Russians to save the day in the State of Washington. Unfortunately the offspring who was kidnapped (and needed saving) was young, pretty, and female. Any of that is different, and the "hero" just takes the drug money and runs off and the film run time is only 10 minutes or so.

The riff is great, the film... as well thought out and dramatic as Siegel was intelligible.

Green Book, 8/10; Released in 2018 and stars Viggo Mortensen as Tony "Lip" Vallelonga and Mahershala Ali as African American pianist Don Shirley. Tony is hired by Don as a driver/bodyguard for his tour in the deep South in 1962. The story is based on real events but I suspect that some liberties with the truth have been taken to make the movie more entertaining. It's an interesting look at racism during that time and "Green Book" refers to a Publication that was available that showed hotels and restaurants that were more tolerant and welcoming to black people. It is well acted, the pace can be a bit slow at times but overall an interesting movie.

The Housemaid

I really can't reveal much about the movie without revealing the entire plot. I will say it's a horror thriller that is quite well acted by two of the three main characters. Sidney Sweeney comes off as a tiny bit flat (unlike her fantastic rack) as the live-in maid who has to deal with the mother who hired her when it becomes apparent the mother is literally quite crazy and dangerous. And then the plot twists.

7.5 and well worth a watch.

Thanks for that. I've gone back and forth on whether or not to pay the astronomical $5.99 fee to rent this one. Thus, since I'm now going to rent it, I'm holding you liable and you can expect a letter from my lawyer should I disagree with you about the quality of this movie.

Terrifier 2

If you've wanted an incredibly gory movie and also needed a super creepy ten year girl as an evil clown's sidekick, but were hesitant to watch unless a guy's dick gets ripped off by said evil clown, then boy, have I got a movie for you.

These movies are no holds barred and unapologetic. They don't pretend to make any social commentary or have any deep themes whatsoever. They're purposefully over the top, excessive, self-indulgent, and shocking with great practical effects used to those ends. Even I cringe at some of the sheer brutality in these movies. For example, if you've ever posed the question to yourself, Can a woman really tear her intestines out through her vagina in order to eat them? this movie provides an answer to that question with an emphatic "Yes!"

Horror Movie Scale: 7.5/10

Non-Horror Scale: 1/10

It gets the 1/10 rating because the target audience is so very niche.
