The German AfD are three seats away from an outright majority. 43.8% of the vote. Let that shit sink in. Statistically, if they win we're heading straight for WW3.

Btw, there's an election in Sweden now with a similar situation. The far right party might end up the biggest party in the parliament. Fortunatly Sweden has a tiny army.

Anyway... I forsee a near future where Trump will come across as one of the more sensible western leaders. That was a depressing sentance to write.

Yeah, I'm gonna let bilby explain why we shouldn't be terrified and also inadvertanly explain what "preferance votes" are. 43% sounds real fucking scary until you put the context you got that number from.

I really want to know what your control set is.

Germany going to war with the world also corresponds to it's leaders having a preposterous moustache. Let's pray Tino Chrupalla doesn't change his fashion sense and that Alice Weidel doesn't change her gender. Or we're all doomed

With what army? It took Hitler a bit to get the military thing going. Russia is the nationalistic state that has things kind of running towards a major war sort of path, though Russia really lacks infantry. Russia can blow shit up, but they can't really occupy much in the way of territory. Germany, even less.

Europe swinging back to fascism is depressing.

When things are going well for too long, people become stupid and act stupidly. They tilt their lances at windmills and burn shit to the ground to save us from the dragons.

I understand the depressing nature of such foresight. Keep in mind that it’s just foresight. The hindsight might end up being far worse!

When Hitler took over in 1933 Germany was broke and broken. Now Germany is Europes wealthiest and most industrialised country.

It took Hitler 6 years.

Fun fact, German military technology in ww2 was shit. I have no idea what all the myths about Nazi awesomeness are about. Its like we're trying to build them up after defeat to make the victory more impressive. It was mostly a collection of really dumb engineering choices.

The allied focused on stuff that was easy and cheap to produce, and cheap to maintain. Germany did it differently.

Oh, no. The problem in the world wars was the German culture. That culture is the same today. I think German culture is prone to extremism. Any extremism. I think. They don't do things half assed. That's why they're so rich today

Europe swinging back to fascism is depressing.

Yup

I think its the left who is to blame. Its been my hobby horse for a while now. When the left took over it got woke and weird.

It seems like absolute power corrupts absolutely. The left handles being powerful as bad as the right. It seems like

Don't be absurd. The State of Sachsen-Anhalt doesn't even have an army.

A bunch of yokels who pine for East Germany and who revere Putin are not in a position to start any wars. Wake me up if AfD get an outright majority in the Bundestag.

1933 Germany had a lot of willing labor.

The Nazis are what make me worry about those running the Trump Admin. Another selection of America's not the greatest at all, who apparently greatly over estimate their intelligence, competency, and planning. However, the Nazis perfected mass murder and defeating the Nazis wasn't exactly the easiest thing. They did a lot of things right, and then the realities of what they were trying to accomplish settled in. Also, Britain didn't surrender. They broke Enigma. And the Allies tricked Germany on the Normandy landing.

Oh, no.
Of the two, only one is currently engaged in an offensive war... well... any war at all really.

Really?
When the left took over it got woke and weird.
I heard on the AM Radio (right-wing propaganda), someone called in and said how things were so much better in the 80s and 90s on race. The far right-wing was gnashing its teeth over "PC" in the 80s and 90s and now they are starting to say things we better then, apparently blissfully unaware that they weren't at the time.

Unfortunately, I think, the problem is that humans are flexible and can get used to anything. That, if anything, is the lesson of the holocaust and the Nazis. The problem wasn't that they're monsters. The problem was that they were boringly normal. The banality of evil.

They didn't perfect mass murder. The Nazi regime was a dysfunctional shit show. They fucked up almost everything about the concentration camp system. The fact that they managed to kill 12 000 000 people is just evidence of how efficient a modern economy is.

France de-mobilised in 1937, convinced we'd never have war again. Germanys success was more a result of other countries reluctance to take Hitler seriously. The same thing happened regarding Putin in 2014.

Industrially Germany was dwarfed by both England and France. "The phony war" was England slowly gearing up to meet Hitler. It wasn't close. England was just badly prepared. Once England was prepared, ca 1941 Germany was fucked. It was just a matter of time. Hitler knew that. Which is why he attacked Russia (another badly prepared country). If he could have knocked Russia out like he knocked France out then maybe England would be willing to negotiate. Maybe.

Britains industrial might was impossible for Germany to match. And since USA backed them up, there was no way Germany could beat them.

Enigma and radar are just examples of all the ways Germany was technologically inferior to England. Germany had no chance. It would be as if Germany declared war on USA today. The UK had more battleships than the rest of the world put together.

The 80's was way more woke than the left was in the 2010's. The divisions between the right and left were way more extreme than today. The world just seems to have collective amnesia about that.

The reaction was a decadent 90'ies. "The death of values". Being superficial and horrible was the ideal. The latest woke trend was a response to that. Hegel nailed it!

Myopia strikes deep!
The 60’s were WAY more “woke” than any “woke” with which you are familiar.
The word “woke” was not yet in use by the rabid right’s villainization machine, so you’re totally unaware of what was going on or why. You’ve been indoctrinated by a word, not an idea.

Trump will never come across as "sensible". EVER

What the hell do you mean when you say "Woke" anyway? Please define it

WW3 Is Coming! is more than a bit hyperbolic. Jeez.

Anyway, it looks like Europe is dissatisfied with their governments for the same reasons Americans are: immigration, inflation, etc. If right of center parties were in charge, they'd be losing ground. Right now the left is in charge, so they're the ones taking shit for current problems. Right now it all seems business as usual.

I agree with Colonel Sanders adding one more comment.

We will never have a WW3 again anything like of the past. There might be a WW3 nuclear annihilation or even similar massive drone exchange. But an actual massive world war looking anything like WW2 just isn't going to ever happen again. Technology is too different today.

Agreed. But I suspect we’ll eventually reach a point where we look back and actually miss his particular brand of stupid, when someone just as malicious, but far more competent, takes his place.

If the situation in Ukraine is any guide, WWIII will look a lot more like WWI than like WWII.

I am not sure why anyone would expect something similar to WWII, and indeed, I am not sure that anyone even does - saying "anything like WW2 just isn't going to ever happen again" is a strawman, built to make the speaker appear wise while he spouts the bleeding bloody obvious.

Who is saying that WWIII will look like WWII? I am not aware of any serious commentator who says that.

During the Cold War, the near universal assumption was that WWIII would entail a massive thermonuclear exchange. Today that's seeming less likely, (though far from impossible, at least as an endgame to a more conventional conflict).

The two world wars so far have been rather different in character, both militarily and (to a lesser extent) geopolitically, despite both having had Germany star as the lead villain.

It would be strange to expect the next world war to be a near duplicate of either of the others.

The first war led to technologies that gave the second a totally different character; The second did the same for the Cold War, to the extent that it never even entailed mass casualty conflict between the major belligerents. The next might reasonably be considered WWIV, rather than WWIII, but whatever it is called, it's clear that the technologies and strategies from the preceeding wars will ensure that it is very different again.
