Early on, details are emerging. Sounds like a pilot may have been stabbed by co-pilot, who then allegedly tried to crash the plane that was on route to Tel Aviv.

ABC stated that a passenger got thru the unlocked cabin door, choked out the co-pilot, then got the plane out of the nose dive. Said he learned how to fly by watching TV/movies.

I read that the crowd overpowered the co-pilot. And afterward, they asked if there were other pilots on the plane and there were 2 more. This is the most surprising thing to me about this story.

Pilots deadhead all the time. It doesn't surprise me at all.

There are limits to how long a crew can work before being relieved by a fresh crew. On long-haul (which this wasn't) two complete flightdeck crews are the rule, not the exception.

Thank goodness these guys didn't have a drinking problem.

The perpetrator was previously identified as a security risk.
Suspect in FlyDubai incident was previously identified as security risk: Officials
ABC News said:
The co-pilot of the FlyDubai plane who allegedly attacked the plane's captain and attempted to crash a flight bound for Israel on Wednesday is an Omani national who was previously suspended from flying by Oman Air after being identified as a security risk, according to senior intelligence and law enforcement officials.
Multiple sources familiar with the investigation identified the suspected attacker as 29-year-old Hamam Al Hammami.
The officials told ABC News that Al Hammami, while working as a co-pilot trainee for Oman Air in 2024, was found to be in possession of extremist materials. The suspect was allowed to continue working for the airline in an administrative role, the sources said.

But of course, there are those who thinks this is some kind of Israeli false flag attack, like this Islamist UK MP:
‘I think I smell a rat’: Pro-Gaza MP casts doubt on ‘speed’ of Israeli investigation into Flydubai attack

I wonder that the person who had been previously identified as a risk and barred from
boarding airplanes came to be allowed on that flight? I had assumed that such information was shared between airlines, even internationally..

Ah yes, Ayoub Khan, Birmingham MP who banned the visiting supporters of an Israeli soccer team. We know why of course.

The Green deputy co-leader Mothin Ali, hit out at Suella Braverman's recent comments about "Englishness" and ethnicity. Ali said: “And a message to Suella, I’m Brown, I’m Muslim. But I’m as English as a Yorkshire cup of tea!”.

News

England is cooked.

Probably worried about baseless allegations of Islamophobia.

Don’t thank that was it. Both Oman and Dubai are Muslim countries.

Goodness you people are so woke.

That seems outrageous. An administrative role? That is dangerously creating an SNL sketch that should be hyperbole, not real life!

That is no limit on stupid in the world. Anyone tell him how quickly the US identified the 9/11 terrorists? How our surveillance systems knew they were on the planes? The primary suspicious thing is how a person who was banned from flying... was flying a plane to Israel!

I don’t know how suspicious I find it. The Omani national seems like he was mentally unstable. Perhaps that did not get shared with AirDubai. Perhaps airlines struggle to find qualified pilots.

ABC started this AM that the copilot admitted the target was Tel-Aviv.

I didn't mean to imply a conspiracy. More the point that if there was a failure in safety, that was it, and how in the heck did it happen?

The same way it usually happens. Somebody fucked up.

FZ employs about 6,500 people, of whom about 1,350 are pilots. Their operations staff have a million things to deal with, day-in, day-out, to keep the airline running on time, while complying with thousands of regulations, both local and international. Oh, and there's this handful
of pilots who we are not supposed to allow to fly to Israel, including one from Oman.

Sooner or later, he's going to be the on-call relief pilot when the rostered on First Officer calls in sick. And nobody's going to bother checking whether Israel has him on their blacklist, because you need a qualified First Officer right now, and frankly these Israeli restrictions are usually an overreaction, and if another flight is late you will be in trouble at your performance review, and there are a half dozen other flights to deal with right now...

It's an entirely understandable mistake. And most such mistakes have a safety net - if they asked him to step up, but he had, for example, flown too many hours to qualify under the fatigue management rules, he would be expected to pipe up and say "sorry boss, I am not able to do this flight".

But if he is obsessed with trying to get assigned to an Israel-bound flight, he's not going to mention that he's not allowed.

There's no need to invoke some great conspiracy. Just a regular everyday minor clerical error (by some schlub who was doing a tedious, but high pressure, job) - that on this occasion led to huge and highly public consequences.

With hindsight, it should have been a top priority for the pilot to be cross checked against Israel's list of banned pilots. But on the day, it was just one more probably unimportant obstacle to getting the flight away on time.
