Bullshit. If you think that won't happen, then you have your head in the sand. It's an easily foreseeable and extremely likely outcome. I would even go so far as to say it's the DESIRED outcome.
If you had evidence, you'd be citing it.
How is anyone supposed to have evidence of what's going to happen in a novel situation??
But we can see negatives, we see no positives. All we see is throwing gas on the racial fire. You are not going to solve racism with gasoline!
Whereas denialism will calm everyone down? In what fucking universe has "justice delayed until justice can be denied" ever resulted in the pacification of an oppressed people? Give me a single example of a real life historical situation in which this strategy actually worked.
I have not met a single Black Californian who is mad about the reparations project. Skeptical, maybe. Not mad. But you want me to believe that if a few tony companies publish some bullshit reports on their history in two years, Watts will be in flames again by sundown or something? Stuff and nonsense! Black people don't get angry when their government attempts social repair. Black people get angry when the police start murdering innocent people. That is what has led to every so called "race riot" in the state's history. Every single one. Justice denied, not justice offered, is what "fans flames".
Or do you mean that the Whites of California are going to riot? If so, I doubt it. We're lazy as fuck for the most part, and around half of us are decent people who actually
want justice and honesty from our government. Quite a few of us are Latino and wouldn't mind a few
more investigations opened up into the time period in question, when a lot of our family's land title or citizenship was being erased under unclear circumstances.
I really do think you might be naive.
First off, of course black californians aren't mad about the reparations project, why would they be? They've been promised that the government will give them money to make up for centuries of racism. Whether the racism accusation is true or not is irrelevant - I've seldom met someone who is angry about getting free money.
But let's actually think this through. Because you've already acknowledged that reparations aren't going to actually be paid. So best case scenario: All these companies spend tens of thousands of dollars to research things from a couple of centuries ago that have a high likelihood of no longer existing in the first place.
So some companies will diligently find out what they can and turn it in to the committee. Some companies won't be able to find anything because the records have gone away in the intervening centuries. What happens next?
- The committee says "These companies profited from slavery 200 years ago" and the much of the population gets angry at those companies - those companies are abusive and will be subjected to anger and public demonization.
- The committee says "These other companies didn't disclose anything" and much of the population gets angry at those companies hiding their historical abuse of black people.
- Some companies won't have existed that far back, and maybe if they're lucky the committee will say "these companies are innocent of this specific thing"
So what comes after that? You've already said reparations aren't going to be paid. So how do you think that's going to be communicated to the black californians who've been tacitly promised a payout?
Do you think the committee is going to say "Well, we decided this isn't a good idea and you aren't owed reparations"? I think not, it would make the committee look bad, it would make the democrats who started the committee look bad, and it would make them all targets.
Or do you think they're going to spin it to their advantage? They could very feasibly say "we can't pay reparations that you're owed because these companies aren't cooperating" or "we can't pay the reparations that you're owed because the companies don't have enough in liquid cash to do it".
More likely to me is that they'll propose a bill to increase taxes on those companies for something that happened far in the past...
and that bill won't pass. They know it won't pass - they expect it not to pass. They don't really want it to pass. Passing the bill isn't the point in the first place. Because we all know that republicans in general wouldn't support that bill... and there will be just enough democrats who don't support it to make sure it won't pass.
So why the dog and pony show? That one's fairly straightforward. When the bill doesn't pass... then the democrats can say "those evil racist republicans won't let it pass, they're the ones keeping you from getting the reparations that you're owed". It lets democrats continue to exploit racial tension and drive black voters to support democrats on the empty promise that they'll fix the horrible racism that republicans are forcing on black people.
They're never going to deliver on their promise. It would be counterproductive if they did. They get much, much greater benefit from being able to manipulate public sentiment to frame themselves as the good guys and the republicans as the bad guys.
It's propaganda 101.
