England headed for A Caliphate

they are not here to integrate.

She can see perfectly well. She can breathe just fine. If a bus operator needs to be identified (what kind of "emergency" would need that to happen?) they have a driver's licence, a PCV licence, the fleet number of the bus, the registration number of the bus, and even the route number and time to fall back on - do you imagine that Stockwell Depot's admin team don't know exactly which driver was issued bus EH306 at that time?

All of the objections in that post are absurd. The poster's actual objection is pure bigotry, and they are desperately trying to portray it is being based in reason, which it very much is not.

Only a complete moron, or another bigot, would fall for such desperation.

Wanting to see the face of your bus driver is absurd?

It's irrelevant.

We use non-verbal communication all the time. That's the thing autists struggle with. Its a part of the human experience. A lot of people, especially those who are socially competent, will get stressed by interacting with people who's face they can't see.

And its completely normal for any company with customer facing staff, to have a dresscode. The staff is supposed to represent the company. They're supposed to be identifiable as someone representing the company. Religious dress is also a uniform. Its a uniform for a different organisation.

Making customers feel safe (not just be safe) is completely normal for any company

Hmm. Well. I don't know if you have noticed but Marx won all over the world. There's not a single country on Earth today that isn't in part socialist and follow some socialist principles. Marxism became so all pervasive that we've become blind to what ideas come from Marx.

That's the reality today. There's no serious debate anywhere about removing all socialist programmes. All discussions isn't "if", but "how much".
... Marx's version of "socialism" was all about abolishing private ownership of the means of production and doing away with the profit motive. The so-called "socialism" that has become all-pervasive is all about financing social programs, a safety net, and income flattening by harnessing the profit motive -- by leaving private ownership of the means of production intact and taking a cut of its profits. That's the opposite of Marx's ideas. Out of all the socialist ideas that have "won all over the world", which ones do you imagine came from Marx?
Every country is today comfortable with taxing people and using the money for welfare. Progressive taxes are the norm. It's just standard. This is socialism. You can combine socialist policies within a capitalist framework. Marx thought it wasn't possible. But it is... obviously. We've done it. Almost everywhere.
Yes, exactly. That idea that won all over the world didn't come from Marx -- it's an idea Marx explicitly rejected.

I don't think he rejected it, or even thought it was undesireable. He didn't think it was possible.
Puh-tay-toe, Puh-tat-oh. Whether rejected or considered impossible, it wasn't his idea.

We also need to acknowledge that Marx's idea that history is marching towards the inevitable workers revolution, changed how constitutions were written and laws were formulated. Bismarck's laws were put in place to prevent that "inevitable" march towards revolution. Marx was super super famous in his own lifetime. He came to influence the world as he was writing about it. He could write that something was impossible and then the world changed to make it possible. Because he wrote it.

Or to put it another way, unless governments had responded to prevent this march of history, then perhaps he'd been proven correct?
Bismarck's laws weren't put in place because Marx said revolution was inevitable; they were put in place because Germany's authorities had seen revolutions and didn't like them. Thomas Jefferson was super famous in his own lifetime too, but that didn't mean his ideas were original; they were recycled John Locke. Marx was a famous popularizer of ideas that were already widely circulating on the left.

So what idea that won all over the world came from Marx?

Workers (ie the poorest) having political influence. Once the electorate was expanded to all people Marxism had conquered.

When Marx wrote the Communist manifesto democracy meant rule by those with property. At best the richest 20 or 30% of men.

Nobody educated took the idea that most humans were capable of voting intelligently seriously. Experiments with expanding the electorate came after the 1948 revolutions, ie after the publican of the Communist Manifesto.
:consternation2: Are you seriously crediting Marx with the idea of letting poor people vote?!? Where do you get this stuff? Educated people had been advocating "universal manhood suffrage" at least since the English Civil War in the 1640s. It was actually put in place during the French Revolution. Most U.S. states did away with property qualification for voting long before 1848; Vermont never had it at all. Marx wasn't even original about giving women the vote -- that idea goes back to the American Revolution. Once the electorate was expanded to all people, that wasn't Marxism that had conquered, but Liberalism. Marx was just half-heartedly cheering from the sidelines while simultaneously calling elections "deciding once in three or six years which member of the ruling class was to misrepresent the people in Parliament".

He doesn't actually define what a "dictatorship of the proletariat" means. But he couldn't use the word "democracy" back then. Because democracy then meant rule by a wealthy elite. I think, all he meant by that, was that the poorest have equal power to the richest. I'm aware there's other ways to interpret it.
Sure he defined what "dictatorship of the proletariat" means -- he said the Paris Commune was it.

The idea that technological innovations and wealth shape culture and our beliefs comes from Marx. This idea has shaped our modern world more than anyone else.
How do you figure? This idea has shaped scholarly papers in academia. How has it shaped the actual course of history?
Because it's how we write and interpret history. You and me, when we're talking about history now, we're using Marxist language. Nobody uses any other framework to understand history today. Nobody. You can just pick up any old history book and compare how they talk. Tacitus? It's wildly different. Machiavelli? Gibbon? Voltaire was coming close. But not quite. Condorcet was also coming close.

I'm not saying Marx invented this out of thin air. It was an evolution of ideas. Marx just perfected it. But this is, in essence, Marx's genious idea. Ie, that genius ideas by one person are actually collective ideas that evolve over time.
Newton said he'd seen farther than others by standing on the shoulders of giants. How is what Marx said more perfect than that?

I read Hegel in college -- that's a lot of wasted hours I'll never get back. What the heck is better about the theory of incentives with Hegel's logorrhea added in than the straight Adam Smith?
Adam Smith is just talking about wealth. How money influences our behaviour. What Marx added is that wealth is changing/corrupting and influences our values. If someone has power over us, and there's a chance we get to share in that power if that person likes us, we're more likely to like them, and it will shape our entire being around that. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, is a very Marxist idea.
Montesquieu said power corrupts. Pitt said power corrupts. Hamilton said power corrupts. Already existing ideas don't magically become Marxist when Marx takes them up.

Hegel's dialecticism is how cultural evolution works. Hegel's driver of history is great men. There comes powerful men who shape history around them (thesis) and then the world reacts to the great man, (antithesis) and then the combination (synthesis) creates a new culture. He developed his ideas while Napoleon was tearing through Europe. His final work where this has all chrystalised came out 2 years after Waterloo.

Marx replaced "great man" with "social and technological innovation and wealth". And that's now how we all talk about history today.
What falsifiable predictions does that thesis/antithesis/synthesis business make?

Structuralism is 100% Marx. The idea that it's not great men who shape world events but technology and incentives is Marx. We all just take that for granted today. It's called "a materialist reading of history". We all read history like that. Whenever we today talk about history and ask why something happened the way it did, we all think and answer as a Marxist would. Everyone. It's just default today. That's the degree of his impact on the world today.
Well, in the first place, again, this idea has shaped scholarly papers in academia. How has people's opinion on the importance of great men shaped the actual course of history? And in the second place, huh?!? Of course "great men" shape history! The world would be completely different today if Muhammad had never lived, or St. Paul. (Or, for that matter, Karl Marx, assuming your claim about his impact on the world is correct.) Probably likewise Augustus, Charles Martel, Napoleon, Lenin, and Hitler, though it could be argued someone else would have taken those guys' places.
Marx's contribution to thinking about world history is essentially, if it hadn't been Mohammed, it would have been someone else who did it instead. Technology and social innovations create an environment where all you need is someone to take the first step, and then it'll mostly be on rails. It's not that their contribution is worthless. But things around the great men of the world were more important than the great man himself. That's obviously true to a great degree. Don't you think?
No! Why should we believe that if it hadn't been Mohammed, it would have been someone else who did it instead? Muhammad was Asimov's "The Mule" -- the guy who throws a wrench into all the calculations of probability. There was no technological innovation, and the social innovation was Muhammad himself. Arab tribes had been preying on one another for hundreds of years and could perfectly well have gone on doing it for hundreds more if Muhammad hadn't been there to get them to turn their culture of predation outward. Islam looks like a standout example of historical contingency.

And philosophy is the same. Philosophy builds upon older philosophy. Sooner or later a philosopher will think a new thought based upon the ideas of those before. What name we attach to the philosopher is less important than the idea.
Well sure, that's why my examples are mainly military and political leaders, not thinkers. No Einstein, and Poincare just figures out relativity two years later.

When S:t Paul was racing around the Mediterranean it was full of cults and sects who were evolving towards monotheism. The cult of Isis is pretty much identical to Christianity. Minor details are different. We could have been talking about how Isianity developed. Then we wouldn't care about S:t Paul. We'd talk about some other prophet. But the result was similar.
But the minor details that are different matter. Isianity didn't go in for the aggressive missionary work and coercion that Christianity did. They didn't want everyone to join -- it was a "mystery religion", all about secret initiation, where being let in on hidden truths was what made you special. A religion like that would be about as likely to burn people for unbelief as the Freemasons. If the ruling class had adopted Isianity the Roman world would have gone on being pluralistic for the next thousand years instead of turning into a theological monoculture.

You're just super wrong. ... He was wrong about loads of stuff. Obviously. He was so early. But we don't care about all the stuff philosophers are wrong about. We only care about what they were right about. For whatever reason we like to point out Marx's mistakes, as if that invalidates all the stuff he was right about. ... He's a very impressive thinker.
So what was he right about that's actually important?

All the stuff I mentioned above. The big one is that power structures in society influence our values. Before Marx nobody thought that.

His theories can explain how a small group of people can control a large group of people and the large group of people will like it and contribute to the control.
So before Marx, how did theoreticians explain why the people in some countries believe in obeying the Pope and in other countries they believe in obeying the Bible and in others obeying the Quran and in others obeying the Emperor of China, and how did they explain why which of these things the people believe in overwhelmingly correlates with which one is in power in their societies? Coincidence? What evidence do you have that before Marx nobody thought power structures in society influence our values?

That's not Marx winning. That's Lasalle and Bismarck winning.
Sure. That's a perfectly fine way of putting it.

But I think if Lassalle wins that means Marx wins. I don't think Marx was the end of history, as if philosophy stopped developing after Marx. Lasalle took Marx's ideas and continued developing them. Whether you think the main contributor of the ideas was Lassalle or Marx, I don't think matters. Also... not caring about what great man came up with the idea... is the essence of Marxism.
Heh. Fair point. :beers:

The UK police are going to help usher in the caliphate.

Halloween revellers have been warned that trick or treating may upset neighbours with religious beliefs or those who may be vulnerable. Leicestershire Police is among the forces who have issued guidance and a print-off poster for those who don’t wish to take part in the festivities to use. Police have warned that residents may skip out on the celebrations because they are “observing religious or cultural beliefs that do not include Halloween”.

Fuck that.

This is the very sensible response of the police to the fact that many people are defending the very English belief that the American tradition of "trick or treat" is an imposed foreign cultural practice, in which they rightly object to being forced to participate.

If kids in England want to go "trick or treating", they can fuck off back to the USA where such nonsense is apparently considered normal.

Wut?
If English kids want to dress up in costumes, bang on strangers’ doors and demand sugar, they should be allowed to do that.
And if they get beat up or fed Tide Pods, that’s on them.

Sure, but they don't want to do that. They are being told that this is "normal", by foreigners. This is the imposing of another country's culture on England, fuelled by propaganda disguised as entertainment.

Before American TV shows arrived in England, banging on strangers’ doors and demanding sugar was no part of an English Halloween.

It goes without saying that any foreign cultural influences must be prevented from taking root in England, and that those which have must be ruthlessly eliminated, and their adherents deported. I am, of course, doing my bit for this cause by clutching my pearls as hard as I possibly can. I may even have to start using rolleyes emojis, calling people "fella", or sarcastically posting "Diversity is our strength". Somebody has to do it, or England is doomed.

Apparently.

Fortunately, I don't have to suffer directly, because I left England and became an immigr expatriot.

Foreigners always tell people that the customs of their country are normal. And they are. That’s what makes them customs, in large part. If enthusiastic foreigners (other than paraphernalia & food vendors) were forcing or encouraging the natives to participate in their customs, I’d find that mildly objectionable. But this seems a case of natives simply deciding they like it, so I don’t get the beef.

ETA it’s still the most interesting thing I’ve seen our esteemed English person offer in quite some time. Usually it’s some minor boondoggle that pales into insignificance when compared to the shit he voted for.

No, you don't understand. Any change, however slight, to a country's culture is horrific and unacceptable. England was in a state of cultural purity, homogeneity, and perfection on 23rd July, 1953, and must not under any circumstances be allowed to move away from that condition.

The ONLY other option is to become an Islamic Caliphate, with prayer thrice daily, and mandatory sex change operations for seven year olds. Is that what you want, fella?

Hey dude, I’ll go the distance with you on this one. Just because ‘Murkins’ unparalleled ingenuity, creativity and artistry inspire emulation, that’s no reason to blame them for the English’s famously bad teeth!

That woman bus driver has a commercial driver license and a paying job. Seems discordant with the never assimilated culture that prohibits women from doing such things. I’ve never seen an Orthodox Jew woman driving a bus. Not doing much of a job turning the UK into Afghanistan if they are letting their women get literate enough to get a CDL and then take paying manly jobs.

Yeah because there aren’t any Christian’s fundies that object to Halloween. Lots of fundies where I grew up opposed the demonic traditions. Some wanted to ban trick or treating out right. Most just offered alternative activities for youth at their churches.

But hey, advising that you shouldn’t vandalize or harass people that aren’t participating is a bridge too far and surely the sign of the impending caliphate.

Sydney had a massive thunderstorm last night. BEST HALLOWEEN EVAH!!!

On a side note, whilst talking to the neighbours last week I found out a lot of kids don't want to go trick or treating because that's American and they "don't want to look American". Fuck, I grew up in the 80s and 90s and as a kid it was all ninja turtles and American baseball caps. The 20 somethings I work with occasionally say nonsensical words like "zee" and "airce". Something has changed with the under 10s. So even if it wasn't pissing down, I probably still wouldn't have received a knock on the door.

Not sure what has caused that cultural change...

Yeah, her profession is not exactly typical for an oppressed Muslim woman who has been forced to wear traditional dress against her will, which strongly suggests it's a choice.

Where I work, we have a uniform that includes a lot of choices, and there is no prohibition on religious headwear, and no particular reason why there should be. It is required to coordinate with the uniform, and to be well maintained, neat, and professional in appearance. Several of my colleagues wear hijabs, turbans, or other head coverings.

I personally disapprove of religious garb, as I think it flags the wearer as an idiot, but my mild disapproval is far from a reason to impose my view on someone else. If somebody wants to advertise their idiotic beliefs by wearing a yarmulke, a niqab, a wimple, a turban, or a Manchester United cap, then that's their choice.

Nobody should be forced to wear, nor prohibited from wearing, symbols of their opinions or beliefs, without sound reason, such as a genuine safety concern.

By the way, she's not wearing a burqa, as claimed by the idiot who made that post, she is wearing a niqab that leaves her eyes completely uncovered. The wrap-around sunglasses I wear while driving obscure vision more than this lady's choice of headwear.

My workplace regularly suspends the uniform requirements for various reasons, including sports fandom:

That’s part of the Great American Tradition to which they have been converted, so…

Why would you care whether it was?

I can assure you that men are almost as good as women at driving buses, so if it were a man, public safety is unlikely to be significantly endangered.

I’ve been to Halloween parties where tits were hanging out in the breeze. I suppose they could have been fake; I never got to feel them.
