There are 1000s of picture memes going around Facebook as you probably know. A lot of them are people just making shit up. For example, I don't think Ted ever said this. Often times I Google for the quotes and never find them.

There was a similar one with Sarah Palin and Jeb Bush. I don't mean to criticize just liberals making fun of conservatives. I suspect the same thing is going around on both sides. What does this say about the truth of political discourse? Has it always been this bad or is it getting worse?

Not the first time this happened, from the same Facebook group.

See Snopes.

Well, I just heard that Barbara Lee thinks global warming is going to turn women into hookers (this is not a joke), so nothing surprises me anymore.

I don't think it's necessarily worse, it's just that modern technology has removed a lot of filters and created an environment of incessant, instantaneous shit-slinging.

Trust nothing from Facebook.

You can see a transcript of the speech yourself

He never said what is in that quote.

What makes the fake quote so baffling is that what he did say was pretty much just as crazy. There was no need to make anything up; they could have used real quotes to humiliate him.

PS -- My deepest apologies to any libertarians or conservatives (who are totally different, honest) who are offended by the fact that I criticized patriot Cruz. I understand that criticizing fascists is the same thing as attacking their right to free speech, and I apologize for being a freedom-hating fascist-socialist Islamo-atheist. Can you ever find it in your hearts to forgive me?

You "suspect the same thing is going around on both sides"?

Really?

In a world with not just a Facebook page in it, but FOX NEWS, the best you can do is "suspect the same thing is going around on both sides."

These are instances in which there is more truth in fiction, because his actual words are crafted with dishonest intentions.
These translations of politico-speak reveal the true subtext and intentions of Cruz that underlie his actual actions and words that as a dishonest politician he crafts to imply these sentiments to those who agree with him, but indirectly as to also give him deniability when called on his bigotry and anti-science irrationality.

So while invalid as quotes, they are valid as summaries of his actual views.

I've read the transcript of Cruz's 2/23 speech a Liberty University. There is nothing similar to the quote in the meme and neither the word "atheists", nor "gays" appears in the transcript.

If these quotes are valid summaries of his actual views, there should be properly attributed quotes which reveal this.

I wouldn't at all be surprised he feels that way, his father had made similar notions in his preaching. Nevertheless, I'm with Underseer on this one. Why make something like that up when it's so easy to use his actual words to condemn him?

OMG! If it's on the Internet, let alone Stalkbook, it MUST be true!

SHEESH and jaheebas!

I saw one today about a rich guy buying rainforests in the Amazon, and I swear the guy looks like a mate from the states!

I don't believe any of those memes! FFS, how many cropped up after Robin Williams passed away that are attributed to him?

Thankfully there are some intelligent people out there, well at least three I know of personally, who don't beilievne this crap.

Saw the OP title and was kind of surprised that Steve Austin was talking about politics at all.

I've noticed this recently becoming an a larger issue. Typically, my rule of thumb is if the quote seems too outlandish... even for a Republican, I enter the quote in the search engine and add snopes, press enter. In general, I don't trust images like in the OP.

There is absolutely no excuse for misquote, sorry, not misquoting, but for completely making up a quotation.

Meh. In '04, the President was misquoting the Democrat running for President (quote regarding Hussein and Iraq)... at a public event.
