Which movie did you watch today and how would you rate it?

Gone Girl, 7/10: Starring Ben Affleck in a psychological thriller about a husband whose wife disappears under suspicious circumstances. As the movie progresses, the husband comes under suspicion that he may have murdered his wife. It was a decent movie, worth watching.
 
The Informant!

Steven Soderbergh manages to make a very unlikely subject--an antitrust price-fixing case--into a fairly compelling movie here. In adapting the story of Mark Whitacre (Matt Damon) and his role in blowing the whistle on Archer Daniels Midland's price-fixing activities in the 1990s, Soderbergh chose to paint the story as a very black comedy; Whitacre's own dubious behavior (he went to prison for embezzlement) made this a wise decision. Damon is very effective as the complex protagonist; the remainder of the cast has little in the way of big names, but the always-welcome Melanie Lynskey is excellent as Whitacre's wife Ginger.
 
The Thomas Crown Affair. A classic thriller made in 1968, but it doesn't seem that aged. Starring the late great Steve McQueen, Fay Dunaway, Paul Burke.
An insurance investigator is determined to catch a millionaire as he plots the perfect bank robbery.
The two leads are perfectly matched in this fine thriller.

About right.
no it was a fun CGI movie.
 
The Wolf of Wall Street 5/10

I'm not sure what lured Scorcese and DiCaprio into making this film, but the main characters are so devoid of any redeeming qualities that I couldn't care about what happens to them. That said, the performances nearly make this worth watching and there were several scenes where DiCaprio is addressing employees in the office that were truly outstanding. Rob Reiner does great as DiCaprio's father and Jonah Hill's Donnie Azoff is so despicable that I think I came away with a strong dislike of Jonah Hill, the actor, as well. In the end though - there are hardly any repercussions felt by the main characters for the sins of their excesses and the toll that their wanton greed took on their clients is minimized - So let this be the lesson - You can get away with it!

Saw the real Wolf interviewed on TV, and I have to say the movie and its actors paint him in a far better light than what came across in his interview, an unsavoury character to say the least.
 
Butterfly effect 3 - 7.5/10 - enjoyable 2nd sequel superior to the lacklustre 1st sequel. Interesting twist, but not exactly unguessable.

Survivor - 6/10 - reasonably entertaining but thoroughly cliched spy/terrorist movie trying desperately not to just be a female-centred Bourne. And not really succeeding. Pierce Brosnan looks too old for this sort of nonsense.

American Mary - 7.5/10 - deliciously good setup and decent middle wasted by the dull ending. What a shame. I don't like body modification at all, but this was fun. I'll be definitely looking for more movies starring the lead actress.
 
The Quiet Man

I thought this appropriate viewing tonight after learning of Maureen O'Hara's passing earlier today. John Ford's portrayal of rural Ireland in the early 1920s is sentimental and romanticized almost to the point of fantasy--I seriously doubt if the Irish countryside was as lush (and green!) as depicted here, nor the rural villages of Ireland so homey and charming. However, it's one of the great movie romances--pairing John Wayne with O'Hara, the one leading lady he regularly struck sparks with throughout his career. And the villagers are a delightful lot, played by a mix of Irish performers and regulars from Ford's production posse--Victor McLaglen (who has the famous slugfest with Wayne at the end of the film), Ward Bond, Barry Fitzgerald and Arthur Shields (real life brothers), Mildred Natwick, silent star Mae Marsh, and of course a cameo from the director's brother Francis Ford (as the old man who literally rises from his death-bed to see the aforementioned slugfest).
 
Paranorman 6/10

I've had this sitting on my hard-drive since 2012 (when the film was new). It was clever. Didn't do much with the cleverness though. It was cute. But not cute enough. Funny. But not funny enough. What I liked about it was the artistic style. But that was about it.
 
Inception 10/10

I think this is the best movie I've ever seen, or at least the most clever. Absolutely brilliant.

Every single character is excellent, and the film is full of awesome moments.

Reason for deducting half a point:

The only thing that let the movie down was the scene where he gets left behind. Apart from the unrealistic wind forces, it just seemed contrived. Why didn't they have a way to prevent the launch vehicle from being blown over?

Just saw the Pierce Brosnan version day before yesterday. I'd give it a 6 but I may be generous. Heist movies are one of my favorite genres.

I recommend watching the South Park episode Insheepshion now. It's as good as the film they're mocking... if you've seen Inception
 
Taken 3 - Typical Besson action romp. A little over the top, but in general, decently measured and it was pretty well thought out. The twists were reasonable based on character's previous actions and ultimate motives. Perhaps my only problem was that the opening sequence almost got lost in the film. I started wondering if I saw that in another film. Additionally, the only other trouble is how the ex-wife got involved with the guy in the first place.

I really have enjoyed the Taken series, certainly a solid popcorn film that isn't asking too much from the viewer to overlook. I'd say it was a bit better than The Transporter, mainly because of Besson's greater involvement (I presume) and obviously Neeson is a tad bit of a better actor than Stratham (I like Stratham, but Neeson is Neeson!). The Transporter got a bit over its head at times, while this film remained a bit more to the ground (ie no boarding a moving plane and a fight scene in a crashing plane... where both guys survive the crash!).

Thanks Besson for taking popcorn action films seriously enough.

Videodrome (1983)

I kept dozing off in the middle, but it didn't feel like I was missing anything.

Too weird and very cheezy.

But I enjoyed some of the special effects.

Revolver, 0/10: Stars Jason Statham as an ex con who has served seven years in prison, solitary confinement, for a crime he did not commit. On his release he wants some kind of pay back or compensation from the person he did the time for. This is a Guy Richie effort and it is just awful. It's some sort of philosophical movie with too many confusing sub plots and nonsensical story lines. I bailed about half way through because it was just that bad.
