The outbreak of nuclear war within a year between the West and Putin is 'entirely plausible', says former NATO chief (while promoting his novel about a 2017 war with Russia)

The outbreak of nuclear war within a year between the West and Putin is 'entirely plausible' a former NATO chief has claimed - while promoting his novel about a 2017 war with Russia.
General Sir Richard Shirreff, who served as Nato's deputy supreme allied commander in Europe until 2014, warned that an attack on Baltic states Lativa, Estonia and Lithuania was a possibility.
He said the West should act now and boost its defences to avoid a 'potential catastrophe'.

Should act now?
Presumably that means flying spy planes by the Russian border, putting military installations near the Russian border, putting troops in Europe, putting nuclear weapons in Europe, arming radical jihadis in places close to Russia and organising coups in neighboring states.

Even Putin isn't crazy enough to start a nuclear war. I think the key learning from the article is that the guy is promoting his novel.

Besides the naked promotion of his novel, nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia has been possible every single day for the last what, 50 years or longer?

It's been possible since the 50's.

'Plausible' is a different matter. The whole point of MAD was that it was too crazy of an idea to be possible for anyone sane to want to start a nuclear exchange. As long as the systems are up and ready, it should be an implausible scenario.

However, fear is an important part of ensuring the right vendors get funding so the right branches get the big shiny toys.

And book sales.

Well, it doesn't start at nuclear, it starts as conventional war that escalates to nuclear. All things being equal, I don't think the US would risk nuclear Armageddon for the Baltic States. And in order for Russia to take those states over, they need to be mobilizing now for the rather large occupying forces that would be required.

The guy is trying to sell a book. Nothing else. Kind of like Ron Paul warning about economic disaster on websites.

Yes, he is trying to sell his book.I wonder what that other NATO guy was selling (or smoking), the main american in NATO guy who recently was replaced by other guy. Sorry I don't remember his name but he was equally crazy.

Never ask a General about war. They live for it and will always increase the chance of one occurring at every opportunity. The reason they are generals in the first place is that they believe in application of kinetic force in lieu of diplomacy when it comes to dealing with human disputes. This is how THEY make their living. They exploit human disagreement much as a parasite exploits the veins of its victims.

I don't think Putin is that crazy.

You're underestimating the man. If it comes down to a dick measuring contest between Putin and Trump about who has more machismo, neither is man enough to be able to use their brains.

Putin is not the nightmare scenario. He is regulated by self interest. He wants to survive and have his empire thrive.

No, the nightmare scenario is radical terrorists who want to die along with all of humanity getting the means to make it happen.

Putin isn't crazy at all. He is extremely well calculated. The math isn't always right, but he knows what he is doing.
Funny you say that, I recently read an article of some "expert" who claimed that Putin miscalculated western reaction to "annexation" of Crimea.
The guy was pretty gleeful in his "expertness" about that. I don't know whether or not Putin miscalculated but I know that West/US miscalculated about that much more than Putin.
Now North Korea...
They are not crazy either. They are just trying to prolong their system longer and extort some food from the West.

Putin certainly has intelligence.
There isn't a western politician anywhere capable of the speeches Putin gives.

Western politicians are pathetic by comparison, including the imbeciles in Canada that you vote for
