Where to for the democrats now

Trump was much much much worse. He had business baggage, personal baggage, and no political experience. He has multiple investigations underway on his Foundation and he is still going to trial over Trump University.

His lack of political experience was seen as a plus for other people.
Yeah. I'm going to see a homeless man about my heart condition tomorrow.
Hillary has been hated for decades.
You mean the target of unquenchable hatred from the right-wing because... who the fuck knows why.
Sanders was a better choice.
To hell you think he was. You would have railed about the communist and how we should have stuck to the more moderate Clinton.

In regards to Sanders, we'll never know for certain. That asaid, Hillary was still a weak candidate who didn't inspire faith in people the same way Trump apparently did.

Nobody in the LGBT/Hispanic/Black communities legitimately thought for one minute that Hillary sincerely cared for their rights and advancement in society.

I agree. She only cared for 5 minutes for whichever group was giving her a check.

Which is a key point. One of the things which Trump got right is that the Dems take the minority communities for granted and just assume their support instead of making sure they're working for them. If blacks had turned out to vote or Hispanics were against Trump to the same level as they were against Romney, Clinton would probably be measuring the Oval Office for drapes right now. They assumed a run up in numbers from those demographics to counter Trump's numbers which didn't materialize.

For the Hispanics particularly, they'd spent months screaming to the DNC to help them out in funding for voter registration drives and got no support. Clinton was more focused on flipping soft Republicans in the suburbs than going to the inner cities and talking to the people there about their issues. They put these demographics in the checkmark column and then ignored them while they moved on to other groups.

They need to get back to being a left wing party of the people. The working class voters who won this thing for Trump are their natural base and they need to appeal to them.
But what is the left wing these days? It seems to be more about racial, immigration, feminist and environmental activists/radicals than anything benefiting the working class.
Take Bernie's stance on the DAPL pipeline. He went with ecomentalists and Indians over working class Americans who need jobs (not just pipeline construction jobs but also more permanent Bakken extraction jobs and all the ancillary jobs that spring up around it). Government also gets more tax revenue when we produce more of our own oil. And working class people are much more affected by gas going to pre-shale revolution $3+/gal that the glitterati like Susan Sarandon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Avengers cast who support #nodapl would barely notice the extra money it takes to fill up their SUVs and private jets.
Hillary wasn't radical enough for the Standing Rock protesters: Standing Rock protesters sit out the election: 'I'm ashamed of them both'

On the other hand, Dems put too much stock in rallying non-whites and women to the point that they ignored white men almost completely. Dividing the electorate like that is bad for the country and it certainly proved bad for Dem election prospects last night.
Just look at this piece of premature gloating by Slate.
The Democratic Party’s Racial Reckoning

Note that in the very beginning the author calls those who opposed Sista Souljah's overt racism or those who do not think convicted murderers should be given weekend passes as "white bigots". Later, he clearly states that the Democratic Party does not need thevotes of white people (other than those she identifies as "racial liberals", presumably those who are in favor of racist policies like like affirmative action).

Trump did not so much win this election as Clinton lost it. She lost it because she and the people around her were out of touch.
Agreed.

But having your lead horse as someone with so much baggage was in hindsight a recipe for disaster. And the Clintons have always been on the edge of corruption for a long time.

Or more recently

Maybe it is time to admit Clinton's faults?

The Republicans didn't denycare that Trump was a boorish sexual molesting, income tax evading, draft dodging reality TV star.
FIFY

Maybe it is still time to admit that Clinton, when she walked, her feet touched the ground.

Say what you want about Trump, his election is the Democrat's fault. There is much that can be said about her, and that much is part of why she lost. Not that there is anything that can be said about her.

Ya, that's what I meant about going around talking to the people. They need to figure out what left wing means and they need to figure that out by going around the country and asking people what they think it means instead of having political operatives in Washington offices tell them what it means. Maybe you're right and maybe those political operatives are right, but they need to get those answers from the population and then move forward based on that.

Also consider her slogan "I'm With Her".... really? It is so self congratulatory and unengaging. We were supposed to be with her instead of her being for us? "Yes WE can" was a good slogan. "Make America Great Again" wasn't bad either. In a soundbite world, "I'm With Her" just cements her entitled elitist image.

Well, as a lifelong leftie who truly didn't see this coming,
a- my middle name is Hubris
b- this is why I don't work for MSNBC
c- wait a sec -- MSNBC told me she was unstoppable!!
To fully earn my new middle name, some new predictions (because I think the true answer to the question in the OP is, straight to Jack Squat):
1- Republicans will immediately announce that they are going to do what 'dictator' Obama did, when he had the chance in '09; namely, remake the landscape, in this case, they'll go buck wild on entitlements. They'll want to get it done fast in the new session, to let things cool off for the next election cycle. Expect major bills readjusting Social Security by summer.
2- Obviously, bye-bye ACA.
3- It will be totally in character for the GOP to get rid of the filibuster. They'll do it. This is going to be a sweeeeet country for the affluent. Not so much for the rest of us.
4- The press will be Trump's bitch -- access tightly controlled and dissent (i.e., independent reporting) swatted away.
5- Bad time to be in a public union.
6- Generations more of a corporatist SC.
All of these seem so obvious to me that they deserve a loud 'Duh.' I can't bear to make any predictions as to POTUS 45's moves in the Middle East, on the southern border, toward North Korea, etc, etc, etc. It remains to be seen how wacked-out he really is, now that he's got what he wanted.

I maintain that Trump should have really hammered this point home with his "I'm with YOU!" slogan.

So are you enjoying trolling? I've already indicated Clinton was hardly baggage free. She was, however, not as bad as Trump.

Say what you want about Trump, his election is the Democrat's fault. There is much that can be said about her, and that much is part of why she lost. Not that there is anything that can be said about her.
No, it is the electorate's fault. They (well, very bare majorities in PA, MI, NC) bought a jalopy that the dealer said would be awesome, the best car ever. Factory jobs that aren't coming. Elimination of a debt that will skyrocket. The Special Prosecutor against Hillary Clinton that won't happen. Defeat of ISIS in a month. Ending inner city violence.

Presidential nominees usually make brave promises, but Trump made the grandest of them all. At least Clinton's feet were on the ground.

Bernie generated real excitement among voters.

The Democratic party decided to put their thumb on the scale and put Hillary on the ticket instead of Bernie even though all the polls at the time showed that Bernie could defeat Trump and Hillary couldn't.

Who fucking cares what the Democratic party wants to do or should do? They obviously don't care what Democratic voters want. They demonstrated that during the primaries. Whatever it is they care about more than they care about what I want is all they have now, so I hope they're satisfied with whatever that is.

I'm not a fan of Cenk Uygur, but he made a good point last night. Democrats are paid to lose. They buckle and "compromise" and stay silent as the republicans push back full force and refuse to compromise.... because their donors pay them to. People who speak up for the people, like Bernie, don't get the big money donors. Those who cave in like Obama and Hillary do. American liberals had enough of it and didn't come out to vote.

Not enough to win the nomination.

The Democratic party decided to put their thumb on the scale and put Hillary on the ticket instead of Bernie even though all the polls at the time showed that Bernie could defeat Trump and Hillary couldn't.

The Democratic primary voters put Hillary on the ticket. As for polls, every aggregator, tracking poll, and electoral prognosticating website had Hillary set to win. Yesterday proved all of them spectacularly wrong.

Who fucking cares what the Democratic party wants to do or should do? They obviously don't care what Democratic voters want. They demonstrated that during the primaries.

Again, Democratic voters chose Hillary over Bernie by a wide margin. 3 million votes if I remember correctly. Bernie made lots of noise and had plenty of rallies, but at the end of the day he fell short at the ballot box. Trump, on the other hand, managed to seal the deal with voters.

This wasn't Trump, or rather just Trump. Hillary Hate goes back to 1992. And the GOP and it's various media arms have not let up on the drum beat at any time since 1992. HRC is the most hated woman in America and has been for decades. But for reason's I still can't fully fathom, the DNC thought she was their best shot at the holding the WH. Not because she was, but because she was supposed to be.
The 24 years of anti-Hillary propaganda pays off. Of course, a significant amount of credit goes to the Russian hackers that fed stolen emails to Wikileaks who then dumped emails onto the US.

Of course, Clinton was not a saint, by a long shot, but she sure was the better of the two options without a doubt.

My cat Trouble is a better alternative to Trump, and she runs into walls for no reason. And she's A CAT!

Exactly! This is why not voting is an important and underappreciated tool.

You need to make it clear to these people that you aren't feckless, weak and all-too-willing to accept candidates you don't want under threat of "But the other guy will win!" It's about damn time people stood up against the dems and their complacent arrogance and if the country has to go to shit for four years to get that point across then fine!

Would Hilary actually try again in 2020?

Hillary's political career is likely toast at this point, expect her to transfer over to the lobby industry.
