Sure, it's tough going. But even at 10km a day pace (which my granny could manage, and she's dead), you are looking at 40 days, not 40 years.
To take 40 years, you would need to travel less than 30 paces a day. At that rate, your big risk isn't the desert heat or lack of water - it's thrombosis due to lack of exercise.
