I've been watching the unedifying spectacle of Netanyahu's political career ever since Rabin was assassinated. Now, finally, potentially career-ending indictments are coming for him. There have been a multitude of investigations into his alleged corruption for as long as he's been a public official, but the game changer is when one of his former chiefs of staff gave evidence to police, implicating the Prime Minister. The charges are coming from two investigations, one involving his abusing his power of communications minister to hurt one of Israel's newspapers in exchange for favorable coverage in its competitor, and in another case of taking inappropriate gifts from wealthy benefactors.

Hard as it is to live under Trump, I am finding some satisfaction in seeing this go down. Not only does it show that patience can be rewarded, but the sight of one of his major international supporters go down from a corruption investigation might spook Trump into doing something that might make even the republicans think about impeaching him.

I suspect the peach in impeaching won't ever get ripe enough for a republican move.

But since you're into deep tactical thinking mode to arrive there, why not think in terms of leveraging Netanyahu to provide a novel angle to incentivise a republican move on Trump. Although given that the Putin angle doesn't seem to work, I don't see why a Bibi angle would.

Come on, it shouldn't last more than four years and there's some fun to have in watching the whole thing go from unbelievably outrageous to absurdly grotesque.

So far so good,

So far so good,

So far so good...

What an insane idiot that man is.

His destructive ideas should have been his downfall long ago.

It does not speak well for Israelis that he could be elected.

Much like it shows Americans to be incredibly ignorant to elect somebody like Trump.

I think that 'Israel', like the Republican Party, is beginning to suffer the consequences of evil choices made a good long time ago. It's what they call Karma. I suppose. As the proverb says, take what you want - and pay for it!

This is a bad development. I like Bibi.
f Bibi is guilty of the allegations, how is this a bad development?
If he is guilty as charged, he should be punished.
The whole thing (including the underlying crime) is a bad development, because he is a good leader to Israel, particularly in regards of dealing with Palestinian terrorism.

According to Derec, Bibi dindu nuffin.
I never said that.

Wrong.

His destructive ideas should have been his downfall long ago.
He made Israel safer. Remember when Palestinians would bomb buses or cafes on the regular in Israel? Or when Hamas would shoot thousands of rockets? Because of his strong leadership against Palestinian terrorism, the danger of terrorist attacks has diminished greatly.

It does not speak well for Israelis that he could be elected.
Actually it speaks of them getting fed up with Palestinian terrorism and Labour/Kadima having too soft a touch.

Much like it shows Americans to be incredibly ignorant to elect somebody like Trump.
Trump and Bibi are not even in the same league. Bibi is Premier League, Trump more like Southern League Division One South & West. By the way, did you know that Netanyahu is a graduate of both MIT and Harvard and that he once worked alongside Mitt Romney?

I'm not in tactical thinking mode. I have become very conscious of how politics in Israel and the United States are interrelated. Normally, this sort of thing in one country wouldn't affect another country. But Trump is weak, and obviously frightened, and has shown a reliance on Netanyahu. I can't overlook that this will have reprocusssions.

Frankly, I don't think this will end well for Israel. Even with Netanyahu out, his right wing coalition will probably remain. The question is if the even more disgusting right wing leaders can make it work. I doubt very much this will lead to the left-center taking back control, because there is no left-center worth speaking of. We can always hope though.

Do you mean prosecutions, repercussions, or perhaps persecution?

No indeed.

We can always hope though.

It's said to be the land of the miracles and indeed only a miracle could possibly work now.

So I've long given up hoping.

At that level I think there are only two categories of politician: Those that have been caught and those that haven't.

He made Israel safer.

No he didn't.

He turned Israel into a hated pariah.

And empowered terrorists by conducting terrorism.

He's a bigoted ignorant asshole.

Only psychos lost on the far right can't see it.

No he didn't.
Relative lack of suicide bombers and Qassam rockets shows otherwise.

He turned Israel into a hated pariah.
Anti-semites will always hate Israel.
And empowered terrorists by conducting terrorism.
Terrorists get emboldened when they sense weakness. For example, the Second Intifada (an organized and widespread terror campaign) was launched in 2000 during a Labour government when Ehud Barak made significant concessions during negotiations.

He's a bigoted ignorant asshole.
I don't think he is bigoted, and you definitely can't earn two degrees from MIT and one from Harvard by being ignorant.

Only psychos lost on the far right can't see it.
To you anything to the right of Trotsky is "far right".

Nobody gives a damn about the collections of lies called Judaism.

It is delusional and dangerous.

West Bank settlers are as deluded and potentially dangerous as ISIS.

This is about the modern apartheid state called Israel.

And it is a pariah in this world. Despised for it's inhumane treatment of millions for decades so it can steal land.

Except by some in Israel and right wing nutjobs in the US.

You mean, like Nelson Mandela?

Ok, it's true I can't think of any other example...

Oh dear!

What concessions did Ehud Barak make?

That's a favorite right wing lie.

The truth is this: Barak offered some concessions in a summit with Arafat and Clinton. Both of the latter found them interesting, and asked him to put them in writing. He refused to do so. Arafat refused to consider a verbal agreement. I think he was quite right to do so. After the assassination of Yitzak Rabin by an Israeli settler, who could possibly blame Arafat for not feeling comfortable with what is essentially a personal offer by another Israeli Prime Minister? Whatever verbal promises that Barak might make, they would vanish if anything happened to him.

Of course, then Barak went home and claimed that the failure of talks were due to Arafat's refusal to accept his offer.
