Trump attacks protections for immigrants from ‘shithole’ countries

President Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers Thursday in the Oval Office when they discussed granting entry to immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to several people briefed on the meeting.

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to countries mentioned by the lawmakers.

Trump then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries like Norway, whose prime minister he met with Wednesday. The president, according to a White House official, also suggested he would be open to more immigrants from Asian countries because he felt they help the United States economically.

In addition, the president singled out Haiti, telling lawmakers that immigrants from that country must be left out of any deal, these people said.

“Why do we need more Haitians?” Trump said, according to people familiar with the meeting. “Take them out.”

So maybe Trump is not racist per se, he's just a bigoted asshole. I guess it's possible in theory, but I think there may be a statistical inference somewhere. Plus, his father was a Klansman, which by itself isn't proof, but with his denial of that fact and all his other behaviors one has to become an apologist to explain away every bit of data. It must be tiresome.

That is indeed a shithole. But:

1. This is much more about Trump not wanting people from those places. It shows an utter disdain for what's written on the Statue of Liberty and what this country is supposed to be about. I don't like throwing around the word "elitist" because it's so misused; and in some contexts its a compliment. But Trump's comments were the really, really shitty kind of elitism that every should recoil from--particularly when it comes out of the mouth of the President of the United States.

2. The POTUS is supposed to be what we aspire to. He's supposed to be a figurehead that represents our collective better self. I certainly refer to places like Tijuana as shitholes, but on an intellectual level, I understand why it is the way it is, and I don't despise the people who live there. Rather, I feel for their plight. And when one is charged with representing this country, they should not for a second contemplate either in public or private calling Tijuana a shithole because they have a higher duty to think and conduct themselves better than that.

Now, you didn't say it, but all over the internet; the "He's just saying what everyone thinks" comments are flying. Everyone takes a massive shit on occasion too, and sometimes we'll tell someone about it. I suppose Trump should get on twitter and tweet, "Just took massive dump; ate best chocolate cake last night. Was great going in. Even better coming out."

I mean, why the fuck not? That's what lots of other people say too.

The day we hold a POTUS to the same level as the average person is the day we concede the value of leadership.
