Stacey Abrams wins Dem Gubernatorial Primary

A long shot, as they need a record turnout to win. But they technically have the numbers to pull it off.

She has a lot to overcome in George against a Deliverance candidate. But I think her progressive stances will resonate with the base, like say, for example, Obama's did. Here are some examples from the op link:
  • Expand reproductive freedom to under-served areas.
  • No discrimination, including against LGBTQ.
  • Expand list of conditions for medical marijuana.
  • Must offer many paths for higher education.
  • Founded voter registration project.
  • Expand Medicaid, explore universal coverage.
  • For living wage and right to form unions.
  • Oppose monument to Ten Commandments at State Capitol.
  • We must invest in public infrastructure.

Does her race and gender really matter? Just so long as she's corrupt and incompetent and in the pockets of big business, that's what matters in a governor.

According to CNN a whole bunch of women won their nominations. I know little about them. I hope it is because they are the best choices and not just because they have vaginas.

*sigh*

ETA: In general, the establishment selections for candidates won out last night. Abrams was backed by Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Jesus Christ, and FDR.

JP, news coverage of Stacey Abrams policies today has been very light--a lot of focus on her identity. I don't think that people voted on her identity, but I thought that it might be okay to "go against the grain" of regular media coverage in this space, talk free thought, to discuss her policies. It was rather deliberate on my part. Since politics intersects with race and gender issues, and in particular conservative Georgia has such a history effecting even modern day politics, it may not be possible to separate the two in a discussion. I did put forth an honest effort, though possibly naive.

My husband and I voted for her on the second day of early voting. She is a very dynamic candidate and of course we're going to talk about her race because she is the very first AA female candidate to win a primary for governor in any state. Yay Georgia! The odds are against her winning. First of all, there were more than 500,000 Republicans that voted in the primaries than Democrats. Secondly, there has been a lot of voter apathy in Georgia for years, mostly among young, and poor white voters. If we can change that, she has a chance. I am so sick of conservative old white men leading this state.

On the other hand, Abrams has widespread appeal. She won several mostly white counties in Northern Georgia. That wasn't expected. I've also heard some swing voters say they will support her. She has a very organized campaign, and lots of experience. She's progressive but she knows that you have to compromise to get anything done. I like that about her, and it's very likely that if she does win, she will still have to deal with a Republican majority state Congress. I'm going to give some money to her campaign and see if there is any effort in my county to help get out the vote.

I think you have 1 too many 0's.

If a Democratic candidate can win Georgia, it'd be her. She seems to have a complete package. Like I said, she won endorsements from Clinton and Sanders. And we know Sanders isn't a sell out for an endorsement.

Texas Democrats nominated a gay hispanic senior citizen female so that's +2.

I mostly listened to NPR which did not spend so much time focusing on her identity and much more on her politics. She sounds like a smart, well spoken, hard working person. I hope she wins her race.

It will be a tall mountain to climb, this still being Georgia and it being midterms. Democrats are notoriously more difficult than Republicans to get out to vote when there is no president on the ballot. One wonders if Trump's deep unpopularity among Dems might change that in 2018.

I was expecting a banjo or at least some non-consensual sodomy. And as to the ad, double barreled shotguns are nice, but they are not deportation buses.
Also, Brian Kemp only came in 2nd. He is in the runoff though.

[*]Must offer many paths for higher education.
What concerns me a bit is that she wants to water down HOPE scholarship by expanding eligibility to some C-students. HOPE has had difficulties staying afloat as it is.

[*]For living wage and right to form unions.
How does she define "living wage"?

According to CNN a whole bunch of men won their nominations. I know little about them. I hope it is because they are the best choices and not just because they have penises.

Given that most are Republicans, penises are a factor. That is because some Republicans don't support women in politics at all.
