Pelosi: Impeachment Is Moving Forward

I guess he's the only Republican senator who has a moral compass.
Not a term i generally associate with Romney. He's the one that tried to prevent some same-sex marriages in Massachusetts by invoking a law left over from when some states outlawed interracial marriages.

But he is ambitious. I think he's hoping that when the dust settles, he'll be the only one on the campaign trail who can see he didn't give Bonespurs a pass...

I just watched him say that. He is likely. to be the only one, but I tend to think that his Mormon constituents aren't big fans of Trump, so he had nothing to lose. Still, I'll give him some credit for at least doing the right thing. I guess he's the only Republican senator who has a moral compass.

The Mormon's have really stood out among the religious right with their opposition to Trump.

Yeah, those votes for McMullin really showed Trump up.

Kind of a long game. Once 45 is out, and the indictments and investigations start without presidential interference, a lot of people are gonna start pretending they were not a part of supporting him. Romney's vote will be the distinction he can make with any competition that he wasn't for the traitor.

Yeah, just like trying to find a Nixon supporter in the 70's.
But as Romney has learned from his previous campaign, it's a lot easier to find information these days. No matter what people will say they did or didn't do, there will be video floating around the internet, somewhere, to give the lie to their claims...

Romney has made a stand AND gotten onto national television for the record.

Wow. You live in a fantasy world. Turn off Maddow. Go for a walk. It’s nice outside.

It's 36 degrees, 96% cloud cover outside.
And I've never watched Maddow.

But whether it's in 1 year or 5 years, when Trump is no longer useful to the GOP, their instinct to cover their own asses will drive them away from the Orange Shitgibbon.

Good chance that's right. He would also want to be able to constrain a Dem president without being blatantly hypocritical for doing so. And I agree with J8 that he figures he has nothing to lose, given his constituents' ambivalence about Cheato.

Anyone remember in 2007/08? When apparently no one had ever supported W?

Yes, I even recall Trump opposing the Iraq war.

Oh, wait, no I don't. He was for it at the time. It was only later that he was against it at the time.

52 to 48 for acquital for Abuse of Power. Only one Republican had a spine. I'm curious if McConnell is nervous about any more elections, because the standards he is setting could make it hard for the GOP to do anything if the Dems regain control of the Senate.

I had read a while back that Romney is far and way more popular in Utah than Trump is. So it would appear that he felt more free to do the honest thing.

Well, that shit show is over now. The third Senate Cover-up is closed (Mueller, Kavanaugh, Ukraine).

Now back to the hustle and bustle of getting nothing accomplished in the Senate.

Trump Acquitted On Impeachment Articles; Romney Breaks Rank : NPR

Votes for acquittal:
  • Abuse of Power: 52-48
  • Obstruction of Congress: 53-47
Party-line votes except for Mitt Romney voting against Trump for abuse of power.
Ahead of the vote, Romney said he could not stand with his party over Trump's actions with Ukraine, which he called "grievously wrong."

"The president is guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust," said Romney on the Senate floor. "What he did was not perfect. No, it was a flagrant assault on our electoral rights, our national security and our fundamental values," he said. "Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one's oath of office that I can imagine."

Romney was the only Republican to vote "guilty" but becomes the first senator to vote to remove a president of his own party from office.

Anyone remember in 2007/08? When apparently no one had ever supported W?

Nope. I remember 2012, when apparently no one supported McCain.

Or 2016, when apparently no one supported McCain, Bush or Romney. Man, Republicans turn on each other faster than a bunch of cannibals on a deserted island. Kinda makes me wonder if this vote will have any impact on anyone's career. I mean, it fucking should, but will it?

No. Every time the cannibals kill one of their own, the next thing that happens is a communal feast among the survivors.
As long as there are stupid and ignorant people that they can terrify in sufficient numbers to defeat the lib'rul threat, there is no real fear for their jobs. Just DON'T BREAK RANKS!

I wonder how much money it would take to get Dershowitz to start giving lecture acbout how impeachment isn t a criminal trial, so 'double jeopardy' doesn't apply?

And how exactly did the Trump cheat his election, by the Russian collusion hoax? You're behind the times man/woman! That's old discreteted news!

Vote suppression. The rate of people denied voting because of ID issues was enough to have flipped the election.

Who were denied a vote, illegal immigrants, murderess and rapists, and non registered voters? Perhaps California should've been counted twice. Because you know, all those important Hollywood actors are above the ordinary man and woman in the street.

Citizens for whom taking the time & money to replace a lost/stolen ID wasn't worth it. If your only ID gets stolen (say, in a purse snatching--something far more likely to happen to a poor person) it's quite a pain to replace it.

Despite the acquittal, I'm proud of the Democrats for going through with this. They did the right thing. Good for Romney too for a very historic act. Even if he's popular in Utah, it still showed integrity.

I wonder what impeachable crimes Trump is doing now.

I think Romney is the poster child of the Republican party. Do the right thing - but only if your political career is secure. I doubt Romney would have voted the same way if there was a viable opposing candidate for his seat in the upcoming election.

And Trump will be doing the exact same impeachable crimes he was doing before, he's not that creative. His businesses will keep sucking on the taxpayers' teat, and he will continue to act as though every facet of the United States exists solely to serve him.
