What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

Yeah, they kinda fell back on that trope.

Star Trek made "eject the warp/reactor core" into a fix-all "don't think about it too hard" solution. That aside, I thought they handled Alex's death very well. I did not see that coming (and no, I haven't read the books)

The books had nothing to do with that. Real life crept in and changes had to be made to the story.

In the books, Fred Johnson survives the assassination attempt but later dies of a stroke in a high-G maneuver. The books compliment the show quite well without simply being a facsimile.

Yeah, I found out about that afterwards. I also watched a couple videos of interviews with Cara Gee, who plays Drummer. Her transformation into the character is nothing short of amazing.

I know. It would be like if Gilbert Gottfried was the lead singer of a death metal band. Cara Gee definitely deserves more awards than what she has won.

But her role, as transitioned based on another character in the book was muddled needlessly in the show. They could have easily made Drummer fall more in line with the book, but decided to put her more central.

Behind Her Eyes, 5/10; A Netflix original starring the stunning Eve Hewson who is the daughter of Bono (Paul Hewson) front man for U2. This six episode series has some pretty decent stuff in it but it's a bit of a slog at times and there were a few times I nearly bailed but stuck with it for quite a nice twist for the ending. The plot is centered on the very mysterious Adele, her doctor husband David, Adele's very close friend Rob and Louise. New to the area, married David bumps in to a woman, Louise in a bar and strikes up a conversation and they end up kissing. It later transpires that Louise works in the same office as David. Awkward. And then Adele bumps in to Louise in the neighborhood and they form a friendship of sorts. Adele appears to be a recovering formerly institutionalized mental patient which is where she met her close friend Rob who is a recovering drug addict. It gets weird with flashbacks and nightmare dream sequences, a bit of a "Stranger Things" vibe. A bit too long for my liking and the characters David and Rob are a bit annoying. Eve Hewson and Simona Brown (Louise) were excellent. Both very talented actresses.

Mad Dogs, 6/10; An Amazon series that is way too long and was cancelled after one season. Five fortysomething male friends gather in a remote Belize mansion for a post retirement reunion. The setting is idyllic, a huge place right by the beach with everything laid on for the guests. The organizer of the function is a mysterious bloke, there's not a lot of detail about how he accumulated his wealth but ten minutes in and you know it's going to be something shady. The guys go on a fishing trip using a "borrowed" boat. And that's when things take a turn. The group are suddenly embroiled in a major deal gone wrong and can't find a way out of the mess or Belize. Hounded by a corrupt police force, the drug cartel and other shady characters the guys are in fear for their lives. The series starts off pretty well and has some good tension to it but after episode five it's starts to feel like the TV series Lost. I bailed out after five episodes.

I added NBC's "Peacock" to my streaming on the Roku, and am in the process of revisiting the Battlestar Galactica reboot. I'm not watching every episode, since I've got the DVDs, but there was a moment I'd missed...

When the Galactica had rescued the survivors from New Caprica, there was a scene where Adama and Tigh met on the flight deck. Saul had just come off of putting his wife - the love of his life - down for her betrayal of the colonists. He was a broken man, but he was also a hero. He was walking through the crowd as the flight deck crew was chaniing "Adama...Adama...Adama." It was heartbreaking.

Babylon 5 (remastered) - With Babylon 5 remastered, I needed to watch it through again. Right now about mid-way Season 4. This show was so expertly crafted and told so well. They plant the no telepaths on Narn thing so early, let it grow, and then before you know it, a minor unnecessary detail becomes a significant plot point. And the show answers questions that aren't specifically raised. This is what happens when a concept has been clearly established before it goes into production.

The remastering is very good. Luckily, while the show was on a diet for budget, the set design nor makeup weren't betrayed by a higher definition. The computer graphics are sharper (in computer graphic scenes only). WB apparently didn't bother remastering the shots with special effects and live action. This is both good and bad. The good is it helps people remember what B5 looked like in entirety before this remaster, and the bad... it looks sloppy. Remastering can cost a lot, I get it. Star Trek didn't manage well with it, hence no remaster of the remaining shows. But when things look better, it does look bad when all of a sudden you've go SD blur all of sudden, back to perfect focus, back to SD blur.

I've been tempted to watch Babylon 5. I've been told it was great. The problem is that I haven't watched it before so I'd have to pay attention.

I'm a fan. The special effects are dated. It was CGI in the 90's, so it looks a little cheesy today. Also, the first season is a little slow, but the writing and characters are great. It was one of the first science fiction shows to break from episodic television and have a story arc...one which the creator of the show had allegedly written out before a single frame was shot. And while it ran around the same time as Star Trek Deep Space Nine, it is definitely not Star Trek. Many of the characters are deeply flawed individuals, the station has some dark, crime-ridden places, and the vision of the future is not super optimistic like Trek.

Yes, you will have to pay attention. I got to talk to one of the stars of the show a few years back...Claudia Christian. We didn't talk about the show very much (I deliberately avoided acting like a fan-boy), but the one thing we did talk about was the story arc of Londo and G'Kar. The word we settled on was "Shakespearean."

You can pretty much skip the entire first season and just watch the "In the beginning" movie. The special effects are dated, but that wasn't what made the show so great.

Thanks. Special effects aren't that important to me. I still like Star Trek TOS. I have the remastered TOS but actually prefer the origional. It's the story that matters. And likeable good guys.

That's why I really love Star Trek Deep Space 9.

I just checked and I can get B5 on my HBO Max subscription. I've never watched it before. I wasn't watching much TV when it originally aired. I may have to check it out.

We don't have HBO. We have a Roku and Sling and I really don't know much about it. The boys use it mostly.

If I was really going to watch it I'd most likely spend the $85 to get the whole series on DVD.

Speaking of Star Trek and DVD...

I'm halfway through Picard. I've resisted subscribing to CBS All Access (now Paramount+) despite being a former CBS employee, but Netflix offered me a free trial of DVD.com, and I'm using it to catch up on a few things.

Um...yeah. The production values are really good. It's an interesting premise. Wow...there's a plot twist in this episode! Cool. Hey, there's a plot twist in the next episode. Okay. Oh...look. Another plot twist.

I mean, I'm gonna finish it because by the time the slowed-down mail service delivers the next disc my free month will be over, but so far I'm not exactly blown away. It's fan service.
