What TV are you watching and how would you rate it? [Revive from FRDB]

Now, I've just started The Witcher but it's a little hard to get into. Two episodes in and I'm still a bit confused as to what to expect.

Thing with The Witcher is it is essentially showing multiple storylines that happen at different time periods. It is not until several episodes in that you realize events happening with the Witcher himself happened years before the stuff with the princess, and actually the cause of some of the stuff happening with her.

Do you think it’s worth sticking it out, based on what you might have gleaned of my preferences?

Hmmm.. I don’t think I’m a good judge for that, but it is probably worth it knowing how they are playing with time in the plot threads.

Ok. Thanks for the heads up. Perhaps I'll stick it out for a little bit more and see if I can get into it.

Marvel's M.O.D.O.K. - 1.5/10

i cannot believe how god-awful this show is, given the cast involved.
what this show wishes it was: a cute, funny, quirky animated family comedy juxtaposed with silly over-the-top action and comic book references.
what this show actually is: a pathetic and vapid retread of every single "fat ugly schlub with a way out-of-his-league hot wife is a self obsessed jerkass who doesn't appreciate her until he loses her and then has to win her back" but with just the *worst* god damn writing, and horrible performances all around.

this show is exactly what would happen if instead of a series of vignettes, a single sketch off a random episode of robot chicken was 25 minutes long and a 10 episode series, only without any of the jokes or geeky charm.
it is unfathomably bad, i can't even conceive of how it's possible to fuck up this badly when making a show.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier - So umm... this is how you develop characters and what makes Marvel so much better than DC... it involves humans on Earth dealing with human issues on Earth, instead of demi-gods that happen to be on Earth. They went with mini-series instead of a movie, which I think was the right call and was accomplished very effectively. It started out pretty well and it developed into a very large picture story and finished very strongly. They continue within their own timeline and the consequences of what happens within it.

What made The Avengers a great movie was how the team would gel. That mattered, because the main characters are oil and water. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier isn't merely telling a story, but providing the narrative for the why, not merely the what. There did seem to be a few things that weren't as developed, and a longer series could have addressed, but I think it is planting seeds for future story lines. In the end, the show doesn't really conclude, it just ends a chapter.

Star Trek: Lower Decks 8/10

This is an animated comedy series set in the Star Trek universe, aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos. They are not one of the big front line ships, they get missions like second contact. And it doesn't focus on the officers in charge, highlighting instead some of the nameless ensigns that do the work on the ship. Two main characters are Brad Boimler - a completely by-the-book suck up who is looking to climb the ranks. He is tormented by Beckett Mariner - who believes in Starfleet's mission, but can't stand its bullshit and bureaucracy, so constantly breaks the rules and has been demoted many times for it.

The series is filled with references to all the Trek series (the characters hear all the gossip), including several references to the old animated series. Heck, they even included references to a character in a series that was never made, and the Spock Helmet - which was some toy helmet the toy company put Spock's name on, but had nothing to do with any series ever, until now. The first officer references the Kirk-Spock era as TOS, you know, 'those old scientists'. The season finale was amazingly serious and dramatic, putting it on par with any TNG finale, it was awesome! And it was still pretty damn funny at times. Looking forward to the next two seasons that have been greenlit.

The Serpent, 8/10; A Netflix original eight part series about serial killer Charles Sobhraj, a charismatic conman operating in 1970s Bangkok. After the burnt bodies of Dutch tourists are discovered, a low level Dutch diplomat in Thailand starts to investigate. Without much to go on and little to no cooperation from local police he starts to suspect there is a serial killer preying on backpackers. Well filmed and acted with a lot of subtitles due to the main characters being French. Some episodes have good cliff hangers which is good for binge watching. Charles Sobhraj is a real life person and is still alive today. I think the series does have a fair bit of artistic license but the series is worth a watch.

mythic quest: raven's banquet: -2/10

i didn't think it was possible for a show that was ostensibly by and/or for the nerd crowd to suck more than marvel's MODOK, but wow was i wrong.
this steaming liquid turd is such a failure on multiple levels... it's ostensibly about a game company that is making an expansion for an MMO, but the show's creators made the predictable mistake of trying to make a niche subject into a broad appeal comedy - i won't write a thesis on this, but you understand how and why the big bang theory is in fact a complete sack of shit you'll know what i mean.
on top of that issue, every plot point is completely stupid because the show has no real understanding of how game development works, how MMOs work, how business works, or how human beings work.
this show wants to think it's the office meets silicon valley by way archer, but it tries to get there in most pathetic surface level way imaginable and fails utterly in every respect.

Prisoners of War 6/10

This is the Israeli show that Homeland was based on. It's on Hulu. As the title suggests, it focuses on the prisoner experience much more than spy intrigue compared to Homeland. The first season is almost all about the trauma they (two guys) went through and the readjustment for them and their families after their release. The spy action comes mostly in the final episodes in season 1. The second and last season has more spy games than the first, it was actually made after Homeland started and so perhaps that influenced it some. It got way too maudlin at times the way some foreign dramas can (to this American's taste) while the action was executed competently.

Godzilla Singular Point. 2/10

Anime series on Netflix. It feels like the writer wanted to do a sc-fi story about multi-dimensional time paradox, then wedged in Godzilla to sell the idea. Big G is hardly in it, and not relevant to the plot until the very end. Lots of mini-rodans, and a couple other smaller than normal monsters. Calls back to the original line of movies with classic sound effects and music. The main characters even have the Jet Jaguar robot, which is a big part of the story. But the little bit of nostalgia does not make up for the lack of G. As a long time Godzilla fan, I’d say skip it,

Louis Theroux: Shooting Joe Exotic
?/10

If you've watched Tiger King, you should check this out. It serves as a second opinion and a fitting afterword to the Netflix series, showing the characters in a slightly different light, and paints a particularly dim picture of the producers of the Netflix show. But I can't rate it, because it doesn't really stand alone on its own. If you haven't seen Tiger King or couldn't give a rats ass about who Joe Exotic is, then even if you are a fan of Theroux, there isn't anything interesting here to see.

Binged on "Hunters" on Amazon for the last few days. Alternate history story about Nazi hunting in 1977. Al Pacino was good.

I saw Tiger King. My impression right from the start was the story was too good to be true. No shit a lot was left out.

Angel, Buffy the Squirrel Slayer, Super-Unnatural, Silly Violent TV Program:

I've been watching 90's and early 2000's TV shows on Hulu and Netflix.

Well, I saw fighting and blood and hurting and slamming and pain and death and gymnastical jumping about and silly dialogue and ridiculous over-acting and foolish alpha male bravado and other terribly silly things...
