We just had an emergency alert for tsunami here in Puget Sound. I don't recall that happening before.

Tonga is flooded.

This video is amazing. The cloud is at least 200 miles in diameter. But is this video in real time? Or speeded up? This looks more like a super volcano!

I looked on Google earth and now think the size of that cloud is on the order of 600 miles in diameter. This is insane! If it were Yellowstone it would stretch to Boise, Salt lake, to South Dakota, to Canada.

Imagine it that had happened on land somewhere.
Eruptions at sea turn out to be much worse. The initial eruption opens the magma chamber to the sea which rushes in and creates one hell of a steam eruption. The 1883 Krakatoa eruption is an example.

A very small scale example can be seen if you look at the results of a water heater explosion after the safety valve sticks... the resulting steam explosion can level the house.

In the morning mews ripples are still detectable on the Wa coast.

It was said the tsunami warning susyem was not set up to include volcanos. To get the auotomated warning out they had to enter a bogus earthquake magnitude into the system

I read Australia and New Zealand are sending teams to Tonga. I've read mixed reports about 1 meters wave crashing into Tonga... unless all of Tonga is just 1/3 a meter above sea level, but it sounds like there is concern for the island... of which Sat communication should be possible, so the fact it sounds like there is no communication is worrisome.

I am astounded at what the energy released figure must be. We pat ourselves about how much energy we can release but it pales beside that event.

Peter Lund is the Acting New Zealand High Commissioner in Tonga:

The above screenshot was posted on the Tonganow FB page yesterday.

That page has also reported that the phone and internet cable between Tonga and Fiji is cut in two places, and that a repair could take at least two weeks as the nearest ship able to do the work has to be sent from PNG, and will need to make a detour via Samoa to pick up some of the equipment and parts needed.

Well, all things considered, that is a relief, and explains to Communications issue.

Well, large systems provide larger amounts of energy. The Earth is a small planet, but I wouldn't want to paint it. I was impressed with the capture of the eruption on video from Sat.

The undersea cables have probably been damaged.
