President-elect Joe Biden's Cabinet and Staff Nominees

From the NBC article:
“We are confident Michael Regan will rebuild the EPA, restore the central role of science, and advance health protections for people and the air, water and land upon which we depend to thrive,” Tiernan Sittenfeld, an official with the League of Conservation Voters, said.
Deb Haaland on Twitter: "A voice like mine has never been a Cabinet secretary or at the head of the Department of Interior.

Growing up in my mother’s Pueblo household made me fierce. I’ll be fierce for all of us, our planet, and all of our protected land.

I am honored and ready to serve." / Twitter

President-elect Joe Biden chose Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) Thursday to serve as the first Native American Cabinet secretary and head the Interior Department, a historic pick that marks a turning point for the U.S. government’s relationship with the nation’s Indigenous peoples.

With that selection and others this week, Biden sent a clear message that top officials charged with confronting the nation’s environmental problems will have a shared experience with the Americans who have disproportionately been affected by toxic air and polluted land.

...
“We have individuals coming to these positions who have seen what it’s like on the other side, in terms of communities that have suffered,” environmental justice pioneer Bob Bullard said in an interview Thursday. “They have been fighting for justice. Now they are in a position to make change and make policy. That, to me, has the potential to be transformative.”

Earlier this week, Biden chose former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm (D), a proponent of zero-emission vehicles, as his energy secretary nominee. He also established the first White House Office of Domestic Climate Policy and designated former EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy to head it. Former Obama budget official Ali Zaidi will serve as her deputy.

“This brilliant, tested, trailblazing team will be ready on day one to confront the existential threat of climate change with a unified national response rooted in science and equity,” Biden said in a statement Thursday. “They share my belief that we have no time to waste to confront the climate crisis, protect our air and drinking water, and deliver justice to communities that have long shouldered the burdens of environmental harms.”

...
Born in Arizona to a Native American mother who served in the Navy and a Norwegian American father who was an active-duty Marine, Haaland bounced between 13 public schools as the family changed military bases. At 15, she worked at a bakery, and later attended law school with the help of student loans and food stamps, occasionally experiencing homelessness as a single mother.

Now, after serving a single term in Congress, she will oversee a department that manages roughly one-fifth of land in the U.S. While she hails from a top oil-and gas-producing state, Haaland has pledged to transform the department from a champion of fossil fuel development into a promoter of renewable energy and policies to mitigate climate change.

“I come from New Mexico. It’s a big gas and oil state. And I care about every single job,” Haaland said in a recent interview with The Washington Post. But she added: “We don’t want to go back to normal, right? We don’t want to go back to where we were because that economy wasn’t working for a lot of people.”
DH is 60 years old. Her father's ancestry (1) makes her mixed-race and (2) explains her last name. It looked Scandinavian to me, and my intuition was confirmed.

WaPo notes: "Charles Curtis, a Republican and member of the Kaw nation who was vice president from 1929 to 1933 under President Herbert Hoover, was the first person of Native American ancestry to serve at the highest levels of the federal government."
So DH will be the second.

About | Representative Debra Haaland - "During her time as State Party Chair, she traveled to Standing Rock to stand side-by-side with the community to protect tribal sovereignty and advocate vital natural resources."

From WaPo:
Haaland bolstered her national profile in 2016 by going to the Standing Rock Sioux’s reservation in North and South Dakota to join tribal leaders in opposition to the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline. “She asked what I needed and what the tribe needed,” said Jodi Archambault, a former special assistant to Barack Obama for Native American affairs and a member of the tribe. Haaland, she said, was able to provide support from some New Mexico labor unions — and tortillas and green chili stew.

“She brought her own cooking things and opened her trunk up, and said, ‘This is the best I can do,’ ” Archambault said, adding, “The stew was really good; the tortillas were excellent.”

then
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "This is a big deal.

Historic appointment. A visionary Native woman in charge of federal lands. Unequivocally progressive. Green New Deal champion. Exquisitely experienced.

@RepDebHaaland sister, you are going to do such a great job. I am so proud of you and the movement." / Twitter

John Kerry on Twitter: "America will soon have a government that treats the climate crisis as the urgent national security threat it is. I'm proud to partner with the President-elect, our allies, and the young leaders of the climate movement to take on this crisis as the President's Climate Envoy." / Twitter

Varshini Prakash 🌅 on Twitter: "I served w/ Sec Kerry this summer on the Biden-Sanders taskforce ..." / Twitter
I served w/ Sec Kerry this summer on the Biden-Sanders taskforce & one thing is clear: he really does care about stopping climate change. That's something we can work with.

An encouraging move from the Biden team - now I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a domestic equivalent!

Some more reflections... I've been transparent in the past and throughout the taskforce meetings that Sec. Kerry and I don't agree on everything. In his new position, we won't always agree moving forward either. We’ve disagreed about policy positions & even theory of change.

A principle we use in Sunrise is "no permanent friends, no permanent enemies." When we see policies that reflect our values, we’ll celebrate those. When we see policies that conflict with what the science mandates or what our communities need, we’ll be vocal about that too.

This isn’t a wholesale endorsement of every decision John Kerry will make over the next 4 years, and that’s true of anyone else who gets appointed over the next months - even if it’s a Bernie or a Haaland!

But what I do commit to is actively, passionately, and tenaciously engaging in a national discussion about the actions we take now to protect the future of our world. And what this crisis demands is that each and every one of us does that too wherever you might live.
That's good. Not taking politicians for granted, even if they are on one's side about a lot of issues.

Heather Caygle on Twitter: "Pelosi pushes back on idea that she/Hoyer are holding up Rep. Haaland as Interior pick:

“Congresswoman Haaland knows the territory, and if she is the President-elect’s choice for Interior Secretary, then he will have made an excellent choice.”" / Twitter

Heather Caygle on Twitter: "Here’s full statement: https://t.co/9yYegtabPy" / Twitter
Statement from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi:

"Congresswoman Deb Haaland is one of the most respected and one of the best Members of Congress I have served with. I am so proud that, as one of the first Native American women to have served in Congress, she serves as Chair of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands. Congresswoman Haaland knows the territory, and if she is the President-elect's choice for Interior Secretary, then he will have made an 12 excellent choice.
In her next tweets, HC addressed the question of reducing the House's very thin majority.
Obviously Pelosi doesn’t directly address claims that Dem leaders have told Biden not to tap Haaland (which would reduce, temporarily) their already slim majority.

Instead, speaker makes clear she would support Haaland if picked by Biden.

I just asked Leader Hoyer about this too. He denies claims he discouraged admin from tapping Haaland:

"I have not talked to one single person in the administration about Deb Haaland. My presumption is Pelosi has not [either]," he said on pen and pad.

He goes on to praise Haaland saying her pick would be historic and she would be great for the job:

"I am a very close and dear friend of Deb Haaland’s. I think she is a wonderful, smart, effective leader. And I think she would be an excellent" [Interior] pick.

"Any assertion that I have spoken to the administration about any one of the candidates is incorrect, false," Hoyer says (mentioning Richmond, Fudge too).

"Is that definitive enough?"

I checked on the prospects for special elections for House members who will be joining the Biden Administration.
  • LA-02 - Cedric Richmond - CR D+25 - 48.6% 71.9%
  • OH-11 - Marcia Fudge - CR D+32 - 60.2% 64.5%
  • NM-01 - Deb Haaland - CR D+7 - 16.4% 22.8%
Looks good for LA-02 and OH-11, but NM-01 will be a bit iffy.

Varshini Prakash 🌅 on Twitter: "I am really heartened to see this from @SpeakerPelosi.

Deb Haaland is the woman for the job, and I hope @JoeBiden prioritizes her for this position." / Twitter

Then Joe Biden selects Deb Haaland to lead Interior, first Native American in role

VP jumped for joy:
Varshini Prakash 🌅 on Twitter: "I am SO ELATED. Our movement just won #DebforInterior. ..." / Twitter
I am SO ELATED. Our movement just won #DebforInterior.

This will be the first time an Indigenous person - and a badass climate champion woman at that - will hold any presidential cabinet position.

Congratulations to @JoeBiden for making history.

It can't be understated what a big deal it will be to have @RepDebHaaland as Sec Interior.

Haaland has been a supporter of a just economy powered by clean energy for her entire career. Now she'll have the power & position needed to further our fight for climate justice.

Haaland understands firsthand the toxic and exploitative relationship the federal govt has had with native communities and will work to ensure the sovereignty and dignity of tribal nations as a central part of how we run our country.

Thank you for your leadership @RepDebHaaland, thanks @JoeBiden for being on the right side of history, and most of all thanks to the countless organizations, tribes, individuals, politicians & more who voiced your support for #DebforInterior.

What a great way to end 2020.
Seems like she may make a priority for renewable-energy development on Federal lands. Like giving priority for leases for wind farms and solar farms. Also for offshore wind farms.

Do these eco-socialists believe that just because she is part Indian that she will automatically black all energy-related development and infrastructure? Is there a danger of that? Is Haaland a radical? If so than this is a major misstep for Biden. He was elected as a moderate. He needs to govern like one and not give in to the whacko "eco-socialists".

I suspect that the assumption that Haaland has a reverence for nature that would make her inclined to pursue environmental and climate concerns, is correct.
Biden was very forthright about wanting to advance an aggressive climate agenda. Of course those who prefer the tyranny of the minority we have endured for the last four years to the tyranny of the majority that theyy fear is coming, are going to characterize anyone in agreement with Biden's platform as "whacko "eco-socialists"" whenever they can. Biden's platform is what it is, no surprises.

Asked about President-elect Joe Biden's bringing in hawkish members the Obama administration, as well as officials from companies like Goldman Sachs and McKinsey, Ocasio-Cortez said: "It's horrible."

"And I think it's also part of a larger issue that we have right now, which is...the Biden administration is bringing back a lot of Obama appointees, which depending on where you are in the party, may sound nice, guess,' she said. "But I think what a lot of people fail to remember is that we now have a Biden administration that's bringing back a lot of Obama appointees, but when Obama was making appointments, he was bringing a back a lot of Clinton appointees."

Dozens of people, including some from Goldman Sachs, McKinsey & Co., Facebook, and Google, have quietly been added to the Biden transition team in recent weeks, Politico reported on Monday.

This same cast of characters and their way of doing things, she added, is "a huge reason why we got Donald Trump in the first place. In addition to just the racism that was waiting to be reanimated in this country, [there] was just an extreme disdain for this moneyed political establishment that rules Washington."
That reminds me of when I learned that Pres. Obama had appointed Larry Summers as head of the Federal Reserve. What kind of left-wing ogre appoints someone like Larry Summers to anything?

Derec, what do you consider "radical"? What makes someone an "eco-socialist"?

In this particular context I would say radicals oppose any fossil fuel development in the US. And eco-socialist would be socialists who are also radical on environment. The term is of course from that tweet praising Haaland. The author self-identified as "eco-socialist".

We will need fossil fuels for decades to come. It makes therefore zero sense to hamstring domestic energy production and infrastructure by for example opposing all pipelines.
Even if the rest of US follows California and bans all new internal combustion engined car sales after 2035, that would mean significant gasoline demand until 2050 at least because cars these days can last 15-20 years easily. And that doesn't even address heavy trucks or airplanes.

Then you have electricity production. Fracked gas allowed US to reduce the amount of coal we are burning. Gas emits a lot less harmful pollutants than coal and has a much more favorable CO2 footprint as well. But radicals are opposed to gas as well, even though getting rid of gas for electricity and heating is impractical in the short to medium term. Focus should be on getting out of coal as quickly as possible, even if it means using more gas.

In the end, we need these fossil fuels. Not producing them here means we will have to import more and other major producers like for example Russia will laugh all the way to the bank. GND would do more for Russia's bottom line than a hundred Donald Trumps!

This same cast of characters and their way of doing things, she added, is "a huge reason why we got Donald Trump in the first place. In addition to just the racism that was waiting to be reanimated in this country, [there] was just an extreme disdain for this moneyed political establishment that rules Washington."

No, Obama appointing a lot of Clinton people is not why we got Trump. Hillary's incompetence as a candidate and the race riots starting in 2014 is why we got Trump.

I suspect that the assumption that Haaland has a reverence for nature that would make her inclined to pursue environmental and climate concerns, is correct.

Pursuing climate/environmental concerns is not as much of the issue here as the word "reverence". It's a word with religious connotations. It means that her approach will not be rational or facts based.

We have seen similar lack of rationality in protests against oil and gas pipelines - we need these resources and pipelines are the best way to move large quantities of fluids over long distances.
We have seen it as well in the superstition-based opposition to the Thrity Meter Telescope - often by the same activist groups opposing pipelines and other energy projects.

The wacko eco-socialists have characterized themselves as such. That moniker is not my invention.
And why do you think these whackadoodles are in the majority? I would say the large majority of Americans use fossil fuels in our daily lives. We heat our houses, we use electricity, we drive cars.

I do support reasonable environmental and climate policies. I will even consider an electric car when the time comes to buy a new one (I bought my current car in 2015, so it still has 5 years useful life at least) if I am able to charge it at my condo by then.

but we must be realistic. We will need fossil fuels for decades from now even with very aggressive policies. So we either get as much of those fossil fuels domestically or we have to import more from the likes of Putin at higher prices, because less supply means higher price. Economics 101. You know, the class AOC and her squadmates apparently slept through.

Biden ran as a moderate. He needs to govern as one. If Dems want to lose the House in 2022 and squander any hope of gaining the Senate they will hamstring the domestic energy production in a way that will piss off the American people.

Ah. 2014. Ferguson;

Michael Brown:
Several witnesses reported seeing an altercation in the S.U.V. between Officer Wilson and Mr. Brown. Some said Mr. Brown punched Officer Wilson while Mr. Brown was partly inside the vehicle. At least one witness said no part of Mr. Brown was ever inside the vehicle. In his own testimony, Officer Wilson said that Mr. Brown reached into the vehicle and fought for his gun. Examiners found Mr. Brown’s blood or other DNA outside the driver’s door, outside the left rear passenger door, inside the driver’s door, on the upper left thigh of Officer Wilson’s pants and on Officer Wilson’s shirt and weapon.

There is an altercation between Officer Wilson and Mr. Brown, who is standing at the window of the vehicle. Officer Wilson fires two shots from inside the vehicle, one likely grazing Mr. Brown’s thumb, and the other missing him.

Mr. Brown runs east. Officer Wilson pursues him on foot. Mr. Brown stops and turns toward Officer Wilson, who also stops. Mr. Brown moves toward Officer Wilson, who fires several more shots. Mr. Brown is fatally wounded.

Ferguson Police:
In a scathing report issued in March, the Justice Department called on Ferguson to overhaul its criminal justice system, declaring that the city had engaged in so many constitutional violations that they could be corrected only by abandoning its entire approach to policing, retraining its employees and establishing new oversight. The report described a city that used its police and courts as moneymaking ventures, a place where officers stopped and handcuffed people without probable cause, hurled racial slurs, used stun guns without provocation, and treated anyone as suspicious merely for questioning police tactics. Shortly after the report was issued, Thomas Jackson, the embattled police chief, stepped down.

Yes Trump was elected because skin heads, Nazis, and proud boys saw a man who would stand for white superiority.

Good old boy good old boy! You did your dirty work and got race riots out there instead of extensive police malfeasance.

So the Sunrise Movement (an eco-radical outfit) was pushing her and Biden caved? This is even worse than I thought!

Identity politics has been sadly a major part of Biden's transition. Most attention was given to which non-white non-male groups various picks check off than to their qualifications or policies.

And the American people lost. Putin also won. :banghead:

It can't be understated what a big deal it will be to have @RepDebHaaland as Sec Interior.
What chance is there that she won't be confirmed? Come on, Joe Manchin!

So she is a 5th columnist who will work for a sovereign nations other than the US while part of the US government?

Seems like she may make a priority for renewable-energy development on Federal lands. Like giving priority for leases for wind farms and solar farms. Also for offshore wind farms.
Solar farms are a stupid idea. The main advantage of solar is that you can integrate it into existing surfaces such as rooftops or glass facades close to point of use and not 100s of miles away.
Wind farms use a lot of space, are far away from point of use, and the offshore ones are bad for whales. And wind is very intermittent.
On the other hand I am sure she will be opposed to all offshore and other oil and gas drilling while other countries from Norway to Russia are allowed to develop their fossil resources.

By the way, Haaland is in no way qualified for the position. She only has an English and law degrees. No expertise in energy whatsoever.

She also wants to abolish ICE, which is an extremist position. What is Joe Biden thinking here?
