I expect at least 20% of users on any atheism affiliated site are going to be Liars for Jesus, pretending to be atheists and seeking to employ the "tilted shelves" process which I describe political biases with, but to discourse here.

In some respects, I'm much the same, albeit the other direction: I present atheism as something that can be so close to Christianity that one questions why they would want or need for the "supernatural" at all, to satisfy their "spiritual" needs and intuitions with reality rather than fantasy and thus make Atheism comfortable enough for such people to finally give up their belief in contradictions (including God).

It can also be that they still regard religion as "useful" to society but they don't believe in it personally, and haven't bothered to examine how they use religious language either. It's just a surface-level rejection.

Yeah, I see any "use" of religion within society, particularly by the irreligious, as expressly manipulative and shitty.

It is the same disgust I feel, when I see that, as when I see people pushing fatalism or the like: it is the very stuff of The Nothing of The Never Ending Story; it is people vying not for realizing dreams, but killing them, of killing the very thing of Dreaming itself.

What good are stories if we do not learn from them?

What is the difference between 'emigration' and 'imigration'?
I know a few people in Toronto. Last july I asked one about visiting them, and got polite excuses.

Same. Sometimes we vacation near the Canadian border and stop in the other side of the border for half a day or so. I have been half expecting them to look at our US passports and laugh in our faces. Or to arrest us. Not sure if we’ll try it this year.

I did make some informal inquiries with myself about whether we’d try to immigrate but I couldn’t see leaving some vulnerable family members behind. Plus, I will be damned if I let those traitorous sons of bitches drive me from my home.

One of my neighbors in Indiana took a long trip to Europe last year. When she returned I asked her if the people in Europe were critical of her due to Trump. She said no, they said they felt sorry for her. So, not everybody blames all Americans for the stupid MAGA cult. Sometimes I just feel sorry for the "poorly educated" low income people who voted for Trump, not knowing they were voting for someone who hates them while pretending to care about them. Go figure.

I was happy never to see ICE when we were in Indy. There are so many immigrants from all different places there, but I guess since the state is very red, ICE stayed away, at least so far. My favorite waiter in our favorite Thai restaurant told he was planning on returning to Thailand this year and I told him, I understood. Why would anyone want to come here given the current cult leader and the madness he's brought us.

I'm with you Toni. I'm not leaving the country I've lived in all my life, especially not in old age. Fuck MAGA and the cult. We must stay and fight this, which reminds me, I need to renew my ACLU membership. :) ( Yes, I'm still getting lots of junk mail begging me for money )

Btw, fuck you MAGA. I love diversity. I'm very DEI. This would be a boring country without the diversity, racially, ethnically, gender wise, etc. Diversity and shared cultures are what makes life more interesting.

Perspective. Immigrants are coming here, emigrants are going somewhere else. So whether someone is an immigrant or an emigrant depends on where you are when you are talking about them.

You can say "I am planning to emigrate"; But once you have done it, you would say "I am an immigrant" - in the first case you are still part of your country of origin, in the second, you are now part of your country of destination.

Immigration is to here; Emigration is from here, for whatever the contextual value of "here" is in your sentence.

"Canada is banning immigration from the US", is a simple matter of Canada refusing entry to any Americans who try to move to Canada.

"Canada is banning emigration from the US", implies that Canada has the power to stop Americans from leaving the US at all, no matter where they are trying to move to.

These stories really hit me hard. I read them and think about all the faces that sat across from my desk when I worked as a Passport & Visa Liaison at Subic Bay. I don't know that I ever took a duty more seriously. Thinking about the anxiety experienced by these families knowing their life together was held within these documents that were going to be scrutinized at the US Embassy in Manila.
