2023 House vote for speaker

So, to show just how much of a shit show this is, we have a number of radicals trying to keep a hardliner from taking the Speaker position of the House. And I'm being polite with that "hardliner" term. More than 3/4 of those who voted for McCarthy, voted against the 2020 election.

article said:
Of the 18 deniers, 14 are returning members who voted against certification of the electoral college count on Jan. 6, 2021. In addition, four election-denying newcomers either expressed support for that vote, embraced partisan post-election audits or promoted false claims of 2020 election fraud.

The tally reflects the degree to which election deniers dominate the House Republican caucus, accounting for more than three-quarters of the 222-person conference. A significant majority of McCarthy’s 202 votes — 157 — came from election deniers. But with Republicans holding only a slender majority, any Republican seeking to lead the House must garner near-unanimous support from the caucus’s deniers in order to succeed.
And of course, McCarthy was one of those deniers!

On CNN last night, a Republican ally of McCarthy (can't remember the name) was disappointed with the protest because he said that the 19 protestors couldn't come up with a reason why they opposed McCarthy, or what could be done to make them get on board with McCarthy. I thought that was quite funny. A Republican who likely voted against the 2020 election based on no evidence of fraud, and plenty of evidence supporting a fair election... upset over members in his party doing the same damn thing he and they did on January 6th, 2021.

So we have a bunch of people protesting against the Speaker position for a guy that is about as nuts as they are, voting for a guy that says to vote for the one they are protesting... and a Republican caucus that is frustrated that this nonsense is going about for no viable reason, and want to move forward so they can fuck over the Biden's Administration (and Ukraine)... for bald faced hyper partisan reasons.

The guy on CNN said the Democrats are probably enjoying this. And on some levels, yes, I am. But on other levels, this is scaring the fuck out of me. The Make Entropy Great Again movement is gaining strength.

I think they're just going to have to walk this down the Republican line of succession until they find someone palatable to all of them. I'm sure there's some innocuous Republican they can all vote "meh" on. There's a guy named Cliff in Oregon. Maybe he'll do.

That is the trouble. What is the difference between McCarthy and Jordan? Not much. And more importantly, it is hard to come up with a compromise when there really is nothing being protested over... other than Kevin McCarthy is Kevin McCarthy.

Right now, the GOP in vast majority says guy that was on top should be in charger. This includes almost all of the election deniers from Jan 6th, 2021. So the question for them is "why should McCarthy not be Speaker just because of 10% of the House GOP'ers?" There is certainly an argument for not giving into the tyranny of the minority. Of course, the easy solution, is to nominate a moderate Republican that'd govern fairly... okay... no... maybe back in the 80s.

There is no middle ground here. The question becomes whether McCarthy loses more support, and that will be arbitrary. If he doesn't, then there is little reason to cave. Then the question is, will the people voting for a guy saying to vote for McCarthy back down. Like almost all of them? These people might be true believers in Entropy and Chaos. And this maneuver, at least in their shallow minds, is "making them". Funny how gerrymandering seems to have a shelf life. That when you make it too easy to win, anyone can win, and eventually mad men will win, and mad men will either destroy the party or the country.

I'm starting to doubt Republicans' resolve altogether. Let's see what happens if the full Dem contingent comes in today ready to stick it out. I think the Dems are, in general, more driven by principles than are the 'Pugs, and would therefore tire more slowly. Not sure Jeffries would want to be Speaker though, considering the group of children he'd be in charge of.

The last time there was a protracted disagreement about who should be speaker (shortly before the Civil War) they wound up voting to change the rules to "most votes wins" rather than "majority required".

Seems unlikely at this point, but who knows...

The next two years may prove to one and all that the GOP is utterly incompetent.
The last thirty five years failed to achieve such a proof, but yeah, why not.

We will need a new word other than mere incompetence. Something that combines incompetence with malice, malignance, and militantly stupidity.
21st Century Republican Man
It is worth noting that AOC was a bartender in New York City
We are all well aware of her professional "qualifications".
before being elected to Congress. I'm sure she has extensive experience dealing with creeps and men twice her age who secretly want to get into her pants.
Why are you progs so obsessed with pretending that anybody wants to get into her pants?
You need to look up the word obsessed and perhaps invest in a mirror.
Or just swing by Ben Shapiro's Twitter from time to time. The guy is thirsty for AOC.

We're obviously witnessing a self-loathing, self-love/hate relationship with a healthy dose of projecting.

Word is, the whacky part of the GOP want to adjourn, but the crazy part of the GOP as well as the Democrats don't want to. The Democrats want to get sworn in... and the crazy GOP'ers likely think their power will wane with a pause. They allegedly have an "alternative" to the whacky McCarthy.

This would likely force a fourth vote because... well... until there is a Speaker, there is no House of Representatives to do anything else!

The interesting reflection here is that McCarthy won't be able to get any legislation past that isn't radical or bipartisan. No actual in between conservative shit.

I'm kinda hoping for that Jeffries guy.

Who am I kidding? I REALLY hope that Hakeem Jeffries ends up speaker this session. He's intelligent, competent, and has some sense of right and wrong.

Today's session is starting. They're starting another vote but with the grandstanding nomination speeches first.

Maybe half the congress critters' brains are suffering from iodine deficiency. Pardon my trying to explain crazy group behavior.

Are there any moderate Republicans left who would actually vote to get anything done? I am unconvinced that house republicans as a whole actually want to get anything useful done.

With McCarthy or any of the other Repugs whose names have come up, all they intend to do is block any bill that's sensible and put forth crazy evil bills that would never become law. Their goal is destruction.

After McCarthy and Jeffries nominations, Chip Roy nominated Byron Donalds, whom he voted for yesterday. Donalds is a black Republican, and so of course Roy has to give a cringey "content of character" sound bite.

Well, it would require 6 or 7 members of the GOP who have ethics and who don't really care that much for their political future to vote for a Democrat. I'm not sure there is even one such creature in the GOP, much less the elected members of the House.

Biggs votes for Donalds this time. Boebert also for Donalds.

Rep. Roy (*-TX) nominated Bryon Donalds (?-FL). As you may already know, no one knows who Byron Donalds is. He is a second term Representative in the US House. Nominating him would be like the Dems nominated Ocasio-Cortez, though I don't think she's been arrested.
