I got some more information on Trump's move on Greenland. Greenland has massive amounts of oil and minerals. Super wealthy deposites. But it's also so cold it's not economically feasable at the moment to dig it out. With the Greenland ice sheets retreating these natural wealth deposites will eventually reach a point where it's worth it to extract. When that happens Greenland will be a new Norway. With the difference that Greenland has a tiny tiny population. 57 000. And the Danish government, stupidly, have already granted Greenland indipendence.
Right now, Greenland is pretty worthless. 40% of all Greenlanders work in Danish government administration. The Danish government has placed as much of their govornment administration as possible in Greenland, just so they'll have anything to do. Apart from fishing it's pretty much the only available work. Alcoholism is rampant. Apart from this, 2/3 of Greenlands annual budget is covered by Denmark. Yes, Greenland loses money every year.
So right now Greenland is financially dependent on Denmark. That's why they're loyal to Denmark. But what happens, the moment another player enters, a rich player, and just offers Greenland money for their mineral wealth?
Right now Greenland is on the precipice of becoming an extremely wealthy country. Already indipendent. With no army with which to defend that wealth. In an increasingly beligerent world. Russia is quite close. And Russia, incidentally, has a similar problem to Greenland. With much of it's oil and mineral wealth tied up in the Siberian tundra. When that wealth is made available Russia will become even more dangerous.
Trumps move on Greenland isn't insane. It could pay off. But it's a long term strategy.
