Alex Jones did WHAaaAAAaattT????

4 million is not enough.
Will there be additional punitive damages?
New York (CNN Business)Right-wing talk show host Alex Jones will have to pay the parents of a Sandy Hook shooting victim a little more than $4 million in compensatory damages, a jury decided Thursday, capping a stunning and dramatic case that showcased for the public the real-world harm inflicted by viral conspiracy theories.
The award from the jury was far less than what the plaintiffs, Scarlett Lewis and Neil Heslin, had asked for. At the start of the trial, attorneys for Lewis and Heslin asked the jury to award their clients $150 million in compensatory damages.
A separate, shorter trial during which punitive damages will be discussed is now expected. Punitive damages are awarded when the court finds the defendant's behavior to be especially offensive.
Mark Bankston, an attorney for the parents, told CNN that the plaintiffs are happy with the jury's decision, noting that they had also received money prior to the trial due to sanctions the court had hit Jones with.
"Having already secured $1.5 million in fines from Mr Jones, the plaintiffs are now due $5.6 million that Alex Jones will have to pay them," Bankston said.
This is actual damages. Punishment is still to come, at least the way I read this.

Accidentally emailing the wrong person happens all the time.
Ha ha ha...

I'm old enough to remember
"The ugly moment when you realize that you hit 'reply all"

Tom
I am equally old enough to remember training courses for people to make them aware of the dreaded function "Reply all". This is an own goal, an unforced error, a failure in training, a mistake in play, a result of poor coaching.

Pick your sporting metaphor. "Accidentally emailing" wasn't a valid excuse even in the 90's. That excuse is old enough for me to take it out for some drinks, a dance, a restaurant and then consensually fuck afterwards.

To "accidentally email" someone in 2022 is the same thing as having a neon sign stapled to your back that declares "I'm unprofessional and even worse I am incompetent".
Which is what I expect as "par for the course" as pertains to Jones.

Gosh I want to see that phone's contents so badly
TYT did a segment that said there was tranny porn on his phone.

Yeah, he needs to study the exact process that the liberals were using to turn the frogs gay.

The depth of your wisdom and insight is an inspiration to us all.
I love sarcasm as much as the next person.

Actually, that's crap. I love sarcasm more than anyone else. So please believe me when I say I truly respect your response.

Having said that, this is a very high profile lawsuit, with a very well known celebrity in the centre of it. A fuck up like the defense did, and then try to sweep it under the carpet is well worth condemnation and parody. A total lack of self awareness from Alex Jones' lawyers also merits contempt and satire. If Alex Jones' legal defense is just a clown car of fuckups, I have no problem pointing and laughing.

Here's the thing.
To the best of my knowledge, nobody in the public knows what happened. The possibilities are huge. It may have been user error. It may have been an internal sabotage. It may have been an outside hack.

It could even be a ploy by the defense. Leaks can be very useful, properly managed. It may be that the most damning materials were removed before the leak.

Like I said, I don't claim to know. But some very ruthless people are playing a high stakes game here. I'm uninclinded to eliminate any of the possibilities.
Tom

Out of curiosity, how do we know it is the complete text transcripts and they haven't been redacted?

My guess is that we know this because Jones is not a mastermind, and you could tell pretty quick on the basis of how defenestrating that corpus of phone contents is.

A smarter idiot would delete the most terrible bullshit, leave some stuff that's close-ish, and then also delete anything incriminating.

Like, keep the trans porn, delete the unsolicited tubgirl reenactment video messages, delete the sandy hook emails.

I don't take Alex Jones for a smarter idiot

Ruthless people would have broadsided Jones with a bus.

I agree there is something swimming beneath the surface here.

This just in. The January 6 Committee has subpeoaned these phone texts and Jones' lawyer has agreed to hand them over to the committee. This just keeps getting better.

If it really is a leak, could this be the reason?
AJ has already been interviewed, pleaded the fifth more than one hundred times. It has now been found out he lied on his deposition to this court. If he made the same lies to the DOJ, he could be in some hot water. Volcanic, to say the least.

If you remenber the last January 6 Committee hearings, cips of some very incendiary podcast exerpts from Jones were aired. Obviousy Jones was predicting some intense action at the capitol. He wasn't the only one. Bannon did the same. Mark Meadows told Cassidy Hutchinsonsome bad thing would happen. The Proud Boys and Oath Keepers came prepared to lead the assault on the Capitol. All of this suggests a lot of people knew this was a planned attack. His phone texts will likely shed a lot of light on who knew what and when. If Jones knew it was planned, and did not warn the right authorities, while posting highly inflammatory podcasts, that right there might be a serious conspiracy charge. That the lawyer who recieved these texts turned them over to the Committee suggest there is some damning content in some of these texts.

The youtube live chat during the damages amount hearing was enraging.
A horrid number of people drew on, "THIS IS THE END OF FREE SPEECH", and the like.
it's enraging because these same people wear shirts and shoes in restaurants... remove their shoes when traveling through an airport.. accept that fully automatic firearms are not protected under the constitution... and that our democracy is a representative one, not a "pure" one...
Yet, any accountability for speech is the "END OF FREE SPEECH".
Fucking morons
I suppose being held accountable for shooting them all in cold blood would be a violation of my right to bare arms.
I suppose my announcing to 100 million people that I have 1 billion dollars for anyone that murders a particular person (and here is where they live and where their children are during the day), is my first amendment right to speak freely.
Where they got the "speak freely WITHOUT ANY CONSEQUENCE FOR THE IMPACT" is completely beyond me.

Especially since they're the same people who deliriously cheered on Johnny Depp in his defamation trial.

Jones: “We got this judge up in Connecticut, if you could call it that — this thing that has just cheated us every way, lied about us, said we didn’t give them this, sanctioned us"
So you know what? I’m going to go up there so they can clap their irons on me, whatever, because at least I’m a grown man, I know God. I’m not like some kid in these leftist dungeons they’re raping. People got God to deal with, that’s all I can tell you. Oh, I’m not saying this judge or any of these lawyers are pedophiles. I’m just saying the news and the left promotes pedophilia while attacking the family, and the Democratic Party itself just signed an executive order that will destroy women’s sports. That’s what I said.
Ain't no rape like leftist dungeon rape.
didn't the right used to hold that women's sports were destroying the family and true, God-ordained femininity?

There was no "mistake" on the lawyers part, or whoever pushed the send button knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
How could you possibly know that?
Tom
The accidentally sent files included confidential medical files on Infowars employees, I believe--and to deliberately pass that along would be illegal, unlike passing along evidence of a crime given to you by a client. So, I think an accident is a more likely explanation for the dump.

Apparently they sent a link to to a folder of files which included other folders they didn't intend to send.

They had been resisting discovery the whole time, very uncooperative over every little thing, which is why he ultimately lost by default.
