I think there's a very real danger of progressive thinkers becoming what they despise. Nazis under every bed and in every closet, like Commies in the 50's or Islamists of the last few years. Except that Commies and Mooooozlims have always been the boogeymen of right wing fearmongers, who have been reviled by progressives for their witch hunts. Now that we have Nazis in our midst, the same people who jumped on right wingers for pushing commie/islamist paranoia, are starting to sound the same way about "Nazis!". I'm not exempt, and don't pretend to be. I think Trump is behaving in a manner that can't help but provoke Nazi imagery, and we have a responsibility to point that out. But it doesn't mean that we should hunt down every person who voted for Trump and subject them to waterboarding to find out if they are in fact Nazis....
A little hyperbolic, I know, but .... just sayin'.
That's why it's so important we challenge the few nazis that there are in a rational and logical manner. You know that Alt-Right White Supremacist Richard Spencer? The best arguments that make him buckle the most are the ones that focus on how stupid his ideas actually are. "What is required to be considered "White" and how do we go about testing for it?"
