Yup, a school shooting occurred in Kentucky. Thoughts and prayers will be used to bury the dead. I suppose the bigger part of the tragedy is that...

Oh fuck it. Here is a picture of kitten.

Clearly school shootings just don't matter to the US any more. But Americans love the fucking shit out of kitten pics.

Thanks for the kitten pic.
High School is a lot more exciting these days than it was last time I was there. Who knows? I might have graduated if it had been this interesting.

I guess the GOP realized their thoughts & prayers were useless, so they are trying a new tactic called "completely ignore the shooting of 17 children yesterday"

sums it up

Awww that's a cute kitty. Glad I didn't ever have to worry about being shot when in school.

This couldn't have happen. There's a sign in front of every school saying it is a gun free zone and it is illegal to bring a gun to school.
Wow... Libertarians are awesome! They make the bestest points ever! Thanks to Libertarian Liberty, we have so many guns in America, the idea of ever getting them under control is a laughable comedy of stupid. Thanks for the liberty. Those that have survived, appreciate it.

You mean that sign didn't stop the gun?

I saw people driving faster than the speed limit too!

Those sign must be counterproductive. Since Sandy Hook there have been 142 school shootings - averaging one per week - causing at least 187 deaths in the US. Western Europe has 90 million more inhabitants than the US. Also, it has no signs prohibiting guns in schools. Since Sandy Hook there was 1 school shooting causing 0 deaths.

The absurd gun culture in the US is one of the reasons I am intent on never setting foot on US soil.

I know, right? There should be a sign everywhere that says "gun zone," since there's literally no place on the planet where a gun isn't appropriate.

Come to think of it, these kids probably had it coming. I mean, the students weren't armed, the teachers weren't armed, the janitors weren't armed, and there probably wasn't even a "freedom task force" of citizens roaming the halls carrying semi-automatic rifles, so clearly the kids deserved to be shot as punishment for sheer negligence.

The blood of children is a small price to pay for teaching the lesson that everyone needs to be armed at all times everywhere.

Eleven school shootings this year, and we're not even a month in... good thing we have a giant orange ferret-wearing cockwomble keeping us safe!

Now that we've become so utterly desensitized to these types of events, the Democrats should just drop the whole gun control issue. It's over anyway. When the (R)'s stole that SCOTUS seat, the notion that anything sensible would be done regarding guns ended in all of our lifetimes.

On liberal gun forums (yes, they do exist), you'll find lots of leftists who are just as one-issue as the stereotypical NRA loving, drooling redneck who wants to open carry his tricked-out AR with him wherever he goes. Here's an example to peruse at your leisure:

https://www.reddit.com/r/liberalgun.../two_dead_17_injured_in_kentucky_high_school/

Note that the discussion is much more reasoned and varied than you'll find on a standard gun forum (e.g. cal guns.net), but the majority opinion is the same: bad people will find ways to do bad things, don't take away my rights because someone else did something bad, etc.

Gun control hasn't won the Democratic party any votes. Instead, it's cost them. And the thing is, they can't do anything to change it. There's 300,000,000 or so guns in the hands of private ownership in the U.S. There's not going to be any mass outlawing of them, there isn't enough money to buy them back, there's no criminal laws tough enough on the books to deter their illegal use, etc.

So give it up. Drop it as a plank completely. This is one that has been left squarely in the hands of the people and the people have decided that no matter what, gun control like we see in Europe and Japan is not going to happen here. There is no act too horrific to change enough enough minds.

Put it in the hands of the individual states. Sure, that's relatively futile in terms of getting gun murders under control given the makeup of SCOTUS because the 2nd Amendment as well as issues relating to interstate commerce fall under federal law, but this is a lost fight anyway.

Sandy Hook happened and not a single meaningful reform came from that. That, coupled with Gorsuch and Trump's election settled the matter for good.

These mass shootings don't happen in any other industrialized Western nation.

Golly, I wish we knew what is so different about America compared to all those other Western nations.

Then we could do something about children and others dying unnecessarily in all of these mass shootings. Can you guess what is different about America compared to all those other Western nations? I'm sure it will come to us if we stop and think about it long enough. Of course, if it's conservolibertarians doing the "thinking," that might take decades or even centuries to figure out since they would literally rather watch their own children die than admit that they might be wrong about something.

True conversation between a 6 year old and her Mom (one of my son's friends at school):

"Tomorrow at school we have a lock-down drill, you know in case there is a coyote or a wild animal or something we will know what to do. If you're in the bathroom when it happens you go back in the stall and close the door and put your feet up, and if you're in the hallway when it happens you try to run into the closest classroom, but if it's locked you run back into the bathroom, and if the coyote is chasing you, you just run away from it as fast as you can and hide."

I'm not sure how to feel about that. On the one hand I'm glad they are being prepared. On the other hand, if a wild animal did get into the school, the best response would probably be to open a door or window and let it escape.

Regardless, here we are - America!! Home of the 'Lock Down Drill'

Why do they need a coyote if they're already in the US?
...just wondering.

Presumably no one wants to tell a bunch of 6-year-olds "Here's what you do if when some lunatic comes in and starts shooting up the place".
