Latest "black Twitter" shit storm: an 18 year old with a criminal record pointed a 9mm at a police officer and got shot for it.

Berkeley officer kills suspect who pulled gun; police say victim was 'known' to police
St. Louis Post Dispatch said:
The officer saw two people on the parking lot in the 6800 block of North Hanley Road and began talking with them. Belmar said one of the people approached the driver's side of the vehicle. One of the individuals "produced a pistol with his arm straight out, pointing it straight at the officer kind of from across the hood," Belmar said.
[...]
Belmar declined to release his name at the news conference but said he had a criminal record, with charges including three assaults, armed robbery, armed criminal action and multiple uses of weapons since he was 17.

Of course, "peaceful" protesters descended onto the scene right away and responded by throwing bricks and a firework at the police at a gas station (merely stupid or an attempt to blow up the gas station?)
Between 200 and 300 protesters gathered at the scene after the shooting, and conflicts broke out between officers and protesters, Belmar said. Four people were arrested for assaulting officers, and at least one officer was injured when he tried to get away from some sort of firework device set off on the parking lot, Belmar said. Protesters also threw some bricks at officers, Belmar said. Police used pepper spray on the crowd but did not use any tear gas, the chief said. He also said several police cars were damaged, and some protesters brought bags of rocks to the scene.

"Black Twitter"

You haven't heard of black twitter?

All black tweets, all the time. All tweets must contain reference to something that is black; whether black people, or black coffee, or just that dark void of black despairing nothingness in the pit of teenage stomachs.

Here's an example of how cops are supposed to respond, from the Nashville Metro Police:

Earlier this month, the cops were called to an apartment complex by a man who said he was the victim of an armed robbery. The cops began knocking on doors, and were invited into one of the apartments by the resident. When the cops approached this resident's son to pat him down, the boy -- African-American 16-year-old Xavier McDonald -- ran into the bathroom, locked the door, and said he had a gun.

The cops then proceeded to do everything right.

Instead of panicking and opening fire at the bathroom door, police tried to negotiate with the boy. They called his mother and she came over and began pleading with her son to surrender. The boy refused, reportedly hollering stupid things like "you're gonna have to kill me" at police. Still the cops showed restraint, continuing to try to talk the kid down.

Finally the boy made a run for the front door. Police responded by shooting at him with a tazer, which apparently missed. At that point the boy turned and fired at the police, striking an officer in the leg. Only then, after all attempts to resolve the situation without deadly force had failed, did the police open fire, killing the boy.

This is a tragic story, but it's also a hopeful story. This is the way we should expect all police to respond, regardless of the color of the perpetrator or the validity of the threat. Nashville Metro Police - hardly a bastion of ideal policing - managed to give the nation an example of what it really means to "protect and serve" the public.

Saying he has a gun is a very different situation than actually aiming a gun. Of course the police reacted differently!

Latest "black Twitter" ......
Do you realize how fucking ridiculous that looks?
If you think it's ridiculous, take it up with people who came up with it. It's an actual term though, as the squirrely one found out by looking it up. If you'd have looked it up yourself, you'd have read the following
wiki said:
Black Twitter is a cultural identity[1] on the Twitter social network focused on issues of interest to the black community, particularly in the United States.[2] Feminista Jones described it in Salon as "a collective of active, primarily African-American Twitter users who have created a virtual community ... [and are] proving adept at bringing about a wide range of sociopolitical changes."[3]
I had no idea myself that "black Twitter" was a thing or that blacks use Twitter much more than whites until the whole Ferguson thing blew up.

Here's an example of how cops are supposed to respond, from the Nashville Metro Police:
I looked up the Xavier McDonald case. It seems to me the police might have been too timid, possibly as a result of Michael Brown and others. I do not think police need to wait until fired upon to respond with deadly force. Them hesitating to open fire resulted in one policeman getting seriously injured and it could have easily have cost him his life too.

Downs was in stable condition at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Police Chief Steve Anderson, who also spoke at the Monday afternoon news conference, said Downs had undergone one surgery and will need several more. Anderson said doctors do not know whether Downs will be able to walk again and his future in policing remains uncertain.

Cops need better Tazer training. Perhaps a self correcting focus (aiming mechanism) like we find on modern camera phones.

Except that they should have shot him before he managed to shoot one of them.

They would have had the idiot operating the Tazer been competent.

The department should set that puppy down until he or she demonstrates more competence.

Why is this so hard for you to understand?

When an armed white person points a gun at the police, he is much less likely to get shot.

When an unarmed white person is in a confrontation with police, he is much less likely to get shot.

When an unarmed white person runs around with a toy gun and does nothing threatening, he is much less likely to get shot.

You're not angry about the inherent injustice here, you are angry that people are complaining about the injustice. That pretty much says all we need to know about you.

Why? He'd still be just as dead. Isn't that the main thing?

The police officer wouldn't have been shot if they'd killed the perp before he had managed to do that.

They knew he had a gun. He had it in his hand as he ran for the door. Nice try, but no cookie.

How can you possibly live in this country and need a citation for that?

Fine.

If you're too lazy to read it, here's a short article that covers it and other studies:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slat...1_times_higher_than_same_rate_for_whites.html

This is old news. There has been reams of research covering this topic for as long as sociologists have been examining the issue.

Here's another one, not that it will make a difference:

You're ideologically devoted to preserving this injustice, so I know that mere facts cannot change your mind.

I don't see anything in any of those links that reports the data you claimed: number of police encounters with whites having a gun, and rate of shooting in these encounters vs the same for blacks (what percent of such gun encounters results in police shooting in white vs black cases?), as well as the number of incidents of toy gun encounters and unarmed encounters. Can you kindly point it out?

Did you actually read the link to the Bureau of Justice Statistics? I ask because you accuse Derec of being lazy, but that report seems to have no relevance to the proposition you are advancing. If there is a specific part of that report you feel aids your cause, let us know. :)

And the Propublica review simply found that blacks of a certain age were statistically more likely to be shot than there white peers. That's it. No other conclusions drawn. If you observe that blacks are more likely to live in high crime areas, that makes since. If you bury you head in the ground and ignore reality, I suppose your imagination could run wild.
