Back in the day, some dogs were used and valued for helping people when hunting. Rat terriers earned their keep back in old times as well. Other dogs were guard dogs. Not all were pampered pets.

Not just back in the day; there are still working dogs around - sheepdogs, guide dogs, police dogs, drug sniffing dogs, and others.

There is a tendency to narrow our focus - I gave an example and people seem to narrowly focus on one thing
