Arrested for sagging pants, tasered to death in police custody

According to the autopsy, he was high on cocaine and PCP. His girlfriend (how come that nut could get a girlfriend and I couldn't?) said he had hypertension and schizophrenia. He was a ticking time bomb even without the taser.
Also this happened a year and a half ago. Not exactly recent.

Finally I'd double and triple check anything Daily Kos writes.

Sounds like an excited delirium death. In the old days we didn't notice these cases because they ended up hammered pretty badly by the cops to subdue them and everyone just figured the death was due to that. The taser comes along and brings these guys down without the hammering and we realize there's something else going on. High on PCP is a common initial condition. These guys are nuts, hard to subdue by any means and sometimes on the way back down their heart simply stops.

one minute of continuous tazing may not have helped.

Also the 9 minutes of leaving him alone after it.

Looks like negligence, they basically let him die.
And some of the police officers in the video are really fat.

Isn't it cute how predictably the "small government" types jump in to defend the "jack-booted thugs" no matter how egregious the abuse of power?

It's almost as if they are all completely full of shit when they talk about wanting to get "big government off our backs." Nah, that couldn't be the case, could it?

Never mind that sagging pants isn't an arrrestable offense, even under this law - or that the courts have struck down similar laws as unconstitutional.

It's best to wait and see if they had any *actual* reason to arrest the guy, although the minute-long tasering was obviously wildly excessive in any case.

If the guy was high on PCP and coke, I doubt he was just minding his own business and taking a casual stroll...

I think you'd be wrong. Just like most people who get really loaded on alcohol don't go about bothering people, most people loaded up on coke and/or PCP don't bother people, either.

Sagging pants are neither illegal nor harmful. Otherwise most plumbers would be in jail instead of earning a decent living. Exactly why was Edwards arrested? What law did he break?

BTW, I'm not a fan of excessive use of alcohol, drugs or sagging pants. And I'm really not a fan of tasers. And am especially not a fan of waiting for 10 minutes to begin CPR.

How can you defend those fuckers and attack Daily Kos?

Not sure. I've been around people on coke, they are seriously high strung and agitated. No, they're not peaceful and calm like a pothead. I cannot imagine adding PCP to a cokehead.

Sure about that for PCP if used in public?

I think there must have been more going on.

In other words, the facts don't matter, only which side they're on.

- Kos is a very partisan blog where truth doesn't matter as long as the story furthers the left wing point of view. They wrote a bunch of nonsense about the Michael Brown case as well.
- I am not defending those "fuckers". The most damnable thing I think is not the repeated tasing (the drugs would have made him less susceptible to it) but rather leaving him to die without medical attention. But in any case, it should be up to an investigation to determine what, if anything, the officers are guilty of, not the peanut gallery one way or another. My point was that Edwards carried some responsibility for his own demise due to his own life choices, even if police themselves did wrong.

I would also like to comment on his schizophrenia. Was he off his meds and self-medicated with PCP and coke? Or did he take all the drugs (prescribed and illicit) together (with possible dangerous side effects)?

For the record: I think just about everyone acknowledges there will be police. "small government types" seek to limit the need for police to interact with the public by making fewer things crimes. So, for example, I would not make sagging pants a crime, or using cocaine, or selling loose cigarettes, etc. They would also seek to eliminate no knock raids and other vestiges of military style policing.

Now, when there is a given incident whether the officer used excessive force is a question of facts and circumstances, not ideology. I have no ideological need to insist that Michael Brown was a saintly youth kneeling peacefully with his hands in the air when a police officer executed him for being black if that is not consistent with the available facts.

He was a ticking time bomb even without the taser.

So people on drugs deserve to die instead of getting treatment?

Need a new monitor now.
