STORY TIME: During our time in Cali we have been staying at an Airbnb. The 30th was our second morning and at about 11am we checked out. The four of us packed our bags, locked up the house and left. As you can see 3 of us were Black. About 10 seconds later we were surrounded by 7 cop cars. The officers came out of their cars demanding us to put our hands in the air. They informed us that there was also a helicopter tracking us. They locked down the neighborhood and had us standing in the street. Why? A neighbour across the street saw 3 black people packing luggage into their car and assumed we were stealing from the house. She then called the police.
At first we joked about the misunderstanding and took photos and videos along the way.
About 20 minutes into this misunderstanding it escalated almost instantly. Their Sergeant arrived... he explained they didn’t know what Airbnb was. He insisted that we were lying about it and said we had to prove it. We showed them the booking confirmations and phoned the landlord... because they didn’t know what she looked like on the other end to confirm it was her.. they detained us - because they were investigating a felony charge - for 45 minutes while they figured it out.
We have been dealing with different emotions and you want to laugh about this but it’s not funny. The trauma is real. I've been angry, fustrated and sad. I was later detained at the airport. This is insanity.

The cops admit that the woman’s reason for calling the police was because we didn’t WAVE to her as she looked at us putting our luggage into our car from her lawn.

In California, only white people should use AirBnB because California is a racist shithole.

PS [ent]mdash[/ent] My apologies to any people of delicate constitution who were triggered because I complained about racism. My actions are clearly an example of White Genocide. You are just like the Jews in the Holocaust, and I'm just like the Nazis.

Wait ... seven cop cars and a helicopter for a home break in? Even if there was an actual crime, wouldn’t it be cheaper to have the cops send someone around the next day and give them a check for anything that was stolen?

Not in the news (though believable seeing what is needed to get on the news as small shootings sometimes don't even make it now days). I don't like Facebook as a source.

I understand that the Police want to show overwhelming force to make suspects just give up. Four cars might have been enough. At least they didn't send the Submarine.

At least they didn't send the Submarine.
What makes you think they didn't?

Our range was 4000 nautical miles.* If you own a submarine, you HAVE SENT The Submarine...

*4600 landlubber miles**
**7400 kilometers
Yeah, but that is in the water. It gets crap mileage above ground and tears the road up terribly! If the submarine isn't on site it won't have an effect. You can't say on a bullhorn "And we have a dozen tomahawk cruise missiles targeting the building in a submarine 200 miles from here." It is all about perception, so that sub has to be on-site to be a "game changer".

Yeah, but that is in the water.
Ooh, sorry, no, that's the missile's range. If you have one, it's on site.

Well, that's wrong. having missiles definitely changes the game.
Only thing is, the perps might not understand exactly what game they're playing, or when this round started...

Well hell, then - you don't need an actual submarine, just a well-rehearsed line to the effect of "my submarine has this location targeted with enough firepower to destroy everything within a 1-mile radius of this house!"

We seem to have shifted from the question of whether they deployed The Sub to whether or not The Sub had or could have had, or could reasonably be expected to have, an decision-weighting impact upon the behavior of alleged perpetrators.

_I_ was just saying there's no way to be sure they did not deploy The Sub. Whether it was deployed to any positive effect is not included in the article.

While I understand being suspicious of the source, there is video, or do you also doubt the video?

Haven't seen the video. Also, seriously?!

Obviously staged with actors - note that you can't read any of the "officers" badges!! It's a SET-UP!

This ain't nothing new.

About 40 years ago, my husband came out of a small shoe repair shop in a strip mall outside of a very large metropolitan area and found himself slammed against the side of the building with about 4 or 5 cops on him, guns pulled. It turned out that someone had decided that my husband who was a very scruffy grad student at the time, resembled someone suspected of shooting at a police officer. The mix up was quickly resolved and it turns out that my husband didn't look a thing like the suspect.

That day, we were both extremely glad that he is white. Extremely. Because that county had a reputation of police officers shooting black men first and identifying/confirming after. I'd have been a very young widow if my husband were black. No doubt about it. Not at all. Oh, yeah: this was 40 years ago.

Why haven't we made any progress since then?

Home break-in with the suspects still there. That gets much more response than a home break-in with the suspects gone.

I do agree it's utter stupidity, though.

Wait, what? So suspects that are definitely in the house... and you think this response is ridiculous... but the shooting case where a suspect wasn't in a house, that response was justified?
