Barbaric

In the land of Arizona, you have to pay to be in jail:
I think that is fair. In India, 500 people with death sentences and 71,632 people with life sentences. Why should tax payers support them? Send them to gallows.

Shouldn't we be better than those that we imprison? If, ethically, we say that killing for reasons other than self defence (immediate threat) is wrong, that killing is not a solution for our problems, why would it be right for us as a society to kill those who we feel are a problem?
You have to kill them to show them that killing people is wrong.

Exactly for that reason. They have not followed the rules of law or society and harmed people in society, why should they be shown any mercy?
I am thinking about the the estimated 1,477 million + (as of Saturday, July 25, 2026) people in India today. How do a 100,000 matter?

Killing them would deter other people in committing such crimes. At least, Indians understand that language well. Leniency does not help. It exacerbates the problem.

Why should they be shown any mercy?!?

Because if you were accused of doing something such as that, you would demand mercy, even if you actually did it.

Everyone demands some level of mercy and the only way we will ever get it for ourselves in any measure of reliability is if we present it to others, because some day we may end up the "others" that today I say that we should extend mercy to.

That's why.

I think it would matter to you if it were even just one person, and that one person happened to be you.

So to deter people from doing the wrong thing legally and morally, to kill because it serves the purpose of the killer, a civilised society is to do the very thing it regards as immoral and illegal?

If it's considered to be immoral to kill for any reason other than self defence, that governments reserve the right to execute people as an example or a deterrence doesn't make it moral or good to do so.

Plus in India there is a culture of non violence.

"Cultural emphasis on non-violence (rooted in historical and philosophical traditions) and different baseline patterns of public interaction contribute to lower rates of lethal interpersonal aggression compared to regions with high-crime gang cultures." - The Times of India.
