You're still not getting it. Just because you "proved" something that has never been contested doesn't mean you proved the laptop is real. Plenty of things have been validated--it's clear they imaged his hard drive. But they made the mistake of adding stuff on impossible dates (when he was in rehab) and thus it's unquestionably a fake. Since it's both real and fake it's obviously been edited. There's nothing magical about hard drive images that make them untouchable. I'm writing this in a "machine" whose C drive exists as a file on the real machine. Firefox tries to keep a current record of what you're doing in case of a crash--that means I'm editing a hard drive image on the timescale of seconds.

The tale of it's origins was not credible and I'm sure they reached the same conclusion about impossible data and concluded that it was tampered with. At that point it they would know it was a smear attempt at someone highly placed--and law enforcement generally tries to keep such things quiet. They don't want to be used as pawns in such schemes.
