Black Panther will lead to more diversity, which could be both good and bad

As Reign of April says, there's a reason why the movement is "#OscarssoWhite" rather than "#Oscarsnotblack".
Started by idiots who think Oscars should be given on a quota/affirmative action system. Of course, the Academy caved because last year Moonlight won. And this year you got all the affirmative action nominees like Get Out. It is virtual certainty BP will be nominated for best picture for that same reason.

Quite a beautiful woman. But was there a point in posting her photo other than eye candy?

I've always been impressed by her beauty...She's also a good actress.

I did not have to see it for the point I was making - i.e. that a movie with a cast almost entirely of one race cannot be described as "diverse".

It will certainly help for you to have seen the movie you are deriding in order for you derision to actually have any merit. It would give you context about why those casting decisions were made. When you are depicting a nation that is entirely black, and only people from outside that nation are white, then it makes sense for the cast that makes up the population of that nation to be all black, except for those outsiders. Had you seen the movie, you would know that the scenes set outside of Wakanda, when appropriate for the scene, have white cast members.

This is the full cast and crew. That's not really "plenty of white faces".

That list does not include extras, and in scenes set outside of Wakanda there are plenty of white faces in the background.

two of the major characters are even white.
Which two? Judging from placement in the cast listing, only Bilbo Baggins would qualify.

Which is why you would need to see the movie to understand that Ulysses Klaue, played by Andy Serkis, is a major character in the movie, despite not getting top billing in the IMDB cast listing.

KeepTalking said:
It just so happens that scenes set in Wakanda portray black people almost exclusively.
Make Wakanda great again? It seems that BP's immigration policies make Donald Trump look like Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown. :)

Another reason you would want to actually watch the movie, would be so that you can understand that it is the policy of insulation/isolation that sets up conflict, and is one of the most important plot elements of the movie. You would also understand that the nation of Wakanda is coming to grips with the negative aspects of those policies in the movie, and the various ideas as to how to Wakanda should go about changing those policies is what propels the plot forward.

KeepTalking said:
Of course this makes sense, given the premise that Wakanda is a hidden, insular nation, that did not allow outsiders within it's borders, and that is one of the key aspects of the movie. But that is all it took to trigger you.
First of all, it did not "trigger" me, I merely posted a post in a discussion forum. That's what discussion fora are for.
Second, my objection was with calling this movie "diverse" when it is one of the least diverse major movies of the year.

So, this movie has two major characters that are white, in a cast that is mostly black, which causes you to label it as "not diverse", yet with other posts in this thread you point to movies that have one or two major characters that are black in casts that are mostly white, and label them as "diverse". That seems to be rather inconsistent, would you care to explain how you resolve this inconsistency.

You should also realize that the diversity being talked about with regard to Black Panther is not necessarily about the internal diversity of the cast of this movie, but rather about the diversity of blockbuster Hollywood movies when taken as a whole. This movie certainly makes strides when it comes to making things more diverse in the general case. If most movies made in Hollywood had almost exclusively black casts, regardless of the setting, you might have a point. Given that reality is exactly the opposite of that scenario, it seems more likely that you were "triggered" by alt-right feelings of inadequacy.

What pissed me off about the movie was that the scenes in Korea were filled with Koreans and had little or no Hispanic representation at all. Why does the director hate Mexicans so much?

She's not just beautiful, she's arguably the most beautiful actress working in Hollywood right now.

That's great given Hollywood's stupid way of casting black actresses. Hollywood seems to think that only light-skinned African-descended women can ever count as sexually attractive. Watch almost any Hollywood movie featuring an African-descended woman who is supposed to be sexually appealing, and they almost always cast light-skinned actresses. The fact that Nyongo is making any headway at all is a good sign, I think.

Anyway, she was quite good and memorable in the new Star Wars movies, and no one was able to see what the real actress looked like (she was playing a computer-generated character). If you saw either of those Star Wars movies, I doubt you would question her ability to move an audience with something other than her looks. And she was quite good in this movie. Black Panther had an embarrassment of riches in the availability of high-quality actors in the cast. If she wasn't really good, she would have stood out among all those other really talented actors.

Even the guy who played M'Baku was good, and this was his first movie ever.

How about "Latin(a|o)"? :)
That's still more typing. Would it help if I count out the characters for you? You seem to be having trouble with this.

Maybe not so much "liberal" but "SJW warrior"?
You used the "SJW" term. You're definitely triggered.

I could type out "latino/latina" every single time if it offends you so much. Is that something you need me to do in order to avoid being triggered?
It neither offends me nor "triggers" me. I just find it silly. I wonder how many years it will take until "Latinx" is considered offensive by the next generation of SJWs.
No one is offended but you. Many Latinx people simply think language describing both genders should acknowledge both genders, and that offends you for some incomprehensible reason.

Please tell me the correct way to describe a group of male and female people of Latin descent in the Spanish language without triggering you. I can't help avoid offending you if you won't explain what about this hurts your feelings so much. It's not easy trying to figure out what's going to offend you next.

I'm pretty sure the professor knows that Wakanda is not a real place. College professors just love to use something that's popular at the moment in lectures as an example to illustrate something else they are talking about because it helps to keep the attention of all those hungover college kids. It's funny that you never complained about this when white philosophy professors and theology professors were using The Matrix to talk about ideas from philosophy or religion.
Not really the same. If Wakanda was used for say comparative politics, then yes, I'd see a point. But history? History deals in you know things that actually happened, not made up countries like Ruritania or Wakanda.
Besides, she is not a college professor but a middle school teacher.

Tess Raser, who teaches sixth grade at the Dulles School of Excellence in Chicago, saw Black Panther on Saturday and felt that the film would be an excellent way to start a conversation.
Even though she knows that Wakanda is real (and I was being snarky with my "I wonder") I would not be as sure when it comes to 6th graders.

Poor Derec.

Poor Jimmy. The needle got stuck in the groove again ...

So because she was teaching younger children, therefore she can't possibly be doing the same thing many white teachers do when they use something from popular media to talk about something to their students?

You still didn't answer my question.

If your argument holds water, then that must mean that white people think that the Matrix is real. Do you think that The Matrix was a documentary describing real events? Why do you suppose white people are like that?

To Derec and others making the comment that Black Panther does not count as diversity:

The overwhelming majority of Hollywood movies are over 90% white, yet not once have I heard any of you ever complain about nearly all Hollywood movies since the invention of motion pictures lacking in diversity.

But we get one movie out of thousands which is reversed from all the other movies, and now suddenly you are all triggered and complaining about the lack of diversity.

To what do you attribute this large difference in responses?

How is Black Panther a "diverse" movie when there is nary a non-black person either in front or behind the camera?
Clearly, you think of 'diversity' in the same way as the people who make our annual DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION corporate training products. Where every single shot of an office, warehouse, manufacturing line, or locker room has to include a multiplicity of genders, cultures, and, if at all possible to convey by casting, religions.
In the real world, the business can be diverse even if one small unit of the business is not visibly composed of more than one gender, ethnicity, background, religion, or voting record.

If the studios are asking for 'diverse' hero movies, they're looking for movies that appeal to a wider range of interests than they had previous. That doesn't mean examples of this new 'diversity' need to look like a training video at every shot, or even more than half of the time, in order to be part of this move towards diversity.

Maybe some day there will be an anime-inspired movie with ethnically appropriate actors hired to play the avatars of the animated characters? Then, even if every single face on the movie screen were, say, Asian, rather than white replacements chosen to appeal to a white audience, the movie would be an example of diversity, in the non-stultifying-training use of the term.

Recall that the 90s idea of Black Panther would feature T'Challa growing up in NYC, entirely unaware of being the prince of an isolationist African country. I'm glad we got the 2018 movie instead - that take sounds awful - and like it would be pretty much the same as every other "black" movie of that era. I'm personally glad that there's room for "the Butler", "Hidden Figures", "Black Panther" *and* "Get Out" in mainstream movies these days - they're all about black people at heart - but also about far different genres, from different people. That sort of diversity matters as well.

...with his powers changed to resemble Power Man, and his costume being a tendency to wear a Carolina Panthers sweater...

That would be even worse. In that case, just go with Luke Cage (which Marvel did, on Netflix - it was fucking incredible).

As an aside, here's something on CNN discussing some of the same basic ideas that we've been going through concerning Hispanic and Asian American representation at the Oscars. I pretty much backs up what I've seen - black people, and particularly black men, have done well. Other groups...well...

1 in 18 Marvel films stars a lot of blacks. 17 in 18 Marvel films stars mostly white people across the board.

And we are told that there is an imbalance... of blacks. Seriously fuck off!

And regarding the Oscars, there has been issues at the Oscars since they started. Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, Davis not even nominated for Of Human Bondage, Peter Sellers not for Dr Strangelove (fuck you Rex Harrison, that isn’t fucking singing). There are just too many white people that are ignorant of cinema.

What about the Asians? How come no one cares about their lack of superheroes? I can't think of even one Chinese superhero, and there are like, a billion Chinese out there! :confused2:

I believe Bernstein gave his part of royalty for West Side Story to her because Natalie Wood actually got paid the music royalties for songs she didn’t even sing?

Dude, chillax first of all. Second, most Marvel movies are far more diverse cast-wise than BP. That was my point.

#Oscarssowhite was about online SJWs complaining that Oscars in 2016 (not fucking 1940s!) did not have enough black nominees. That was, btw, two years after 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture and a year before Moonlight did the same.

And after both Shape of Water and Coco won this year, should we complain that suddenly #OscarsSoMexican? Modern-day Oscars are very diverse. But if there are (in their opinion) too many white nominees then suddely #OscarsSoWhite. Give me a fucking break!
