Boy Scouts of America decision to admit girls starts 'highly damaging' recruitment war, Girl Scouts say

These scouting organizations were one of the birthplaces of gendered expectations.

 So... in your mind, there were no gendered expectations prior to 1912?

Yep. Baden Powell tore his skirt stepping over a downed tree and decided no should wear dresses during outdoorsyness activities. Then he chipped a nail on the same hike and just lost it. Whole way back he was splitting his wardrobe into 'boy stuff' and 'other.'

Yeah, they haven't changed at all since the 50s. Right.

Great. You remembered you need fifteen minutes a day to loosen up you emotional chords. :)

I meant this:
What a fucked up, ignorant dismissal. GS teaches skills like leadership and problem solving, not just whatever patronizing bullshit you've pulled out of your ass.
:)

I would have have enjoyed the Scouts much more if there had been girls there.

Why would you have enjoyed it more of there had been girls there?
I dunno about Tess, but i would have enjoyed it more, more likely someone to talk to. All the guys in my pack talked exclusively about professional football and Mormon activities, neither of which interested me.

What is a "mormon activity", exactly? Or do I even want to know?

Oh, nothing sinister. Just tedious.
The LDS church sponsored our den, and tended to inline the scouts with Primary. Which is like mid-week Sunday School. So a 'scouting' activity might have the scouts get on the bus with the other Primary kids to go read scriptures and sing at the old folks home, or sell fundraising candles door to door to buy a hospital bed for the children's hospital in Salt Lake.
Everyone else in my den was looking forward to going on a mission and thought it would be like one of these outings.

Girls don't go on missions so right there is another topic we'd have dhared....

And now I'm just thinking of Book of Mormon where the one kid was like "ORLANDO!!!!" And got shipped to Uganda where hijinks ensued. Hasa Diga Eboai!
