CA GOP putting out ballot collection boxes, which aren't legal.

California Republican Party plans to defy cease-and-desist order, won't remove unofficial ballot boxes

After more than 1.5 million votes have been cast, state Republican Party leaders said Wednesday they will not comply with an order from the chief elections official to remove unofficial ballot drop boxes from counties with competitive U.S. House races.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla and Attorney General Xavier Becerra, both Democrats, said the drop boxes are illegal and ordered Republicans to remove them by Thursday. They said voters could confuse the Republican boxes with official ballot drop boxes put in place and monitored by county election officials.

Thomas Hiltachk, the Republican Party's general counsel, said the boxes comply with California's "ballot harvesting" law, which lets people collect ballots from voters and return them to county election offices to be counted.

If they know who the perps are, why aren't they being arrested?
Sounds like they were given until Thursday. So now that they’ve said they won’t stop we will see if arrests come on Friday.

“Stop. Or I’ll say ‘stop’ again.”

Ok, the labeling is fraudulent. I'm just saying I don't think they're trying to engage in voter fraud here.

"Ok, the written information in fonts and colors of official boxes is fraudulent but that's an unintented coincidence; it is not really meant to convey fraudulent information"

BULLSHIT

I'm wondering if their intention was to challenge those ballots because of mishandling. Like a chain-of-evidence issue.

Why would they want to do that? Those ballots are going to be disproportionately Republican.

Also, state law says that improperly collected ballots are still to be counted. There's not much for them to gain here other than get R ballots not mailed.

There's a significant difference between voluntarily giving your ballot to someone you trust to turn in to an official ballot collection location (what some churches and dem orgs are doing) and this. Obviously LP is too....... to recognize this blatant, obvious difference, but everyone else, including actual CA election official can.

There is nothing stopping the CA GOP from going through the boxes and trying to weed out any Dem votes.

I agree the boxes are illegal and the people behind them should be in jail. I'm just saying I don't think they're actually going to be able to do any evil with them.

It also opens up the possibility that other parties will start putting out fake boxes. Like, just random groups for whatever reason.

Three words, "of" "custody" "chain"... wait that isn't right... chain of custody! What in the hell do you do with ballots put in an unsecured box? The GOP could take them and drop them off, but if the box isn't secured and is outside? There is no chain of custody. The ballots aren't legal at this point, and the GOP is spoiling ballots.

This is Banana Republic shit. This is 2016 was our last (2012?) fair election in our nation's history sort of shit.

So it wouldn’t even be a federal crime to fuck with them? Great.

What "chain of custody" is available for mailed ballots, or ballots in an official dropbox? The box outside the library I put mine in a week ago is just sitting there - no guard, armed or otherwise, and as near as I could see no video surveillance (statements by the county clerk to the contrary notwithstanding).

If as I do you think fraudulent ballots are unlikely to be an issue, why does it matter what kind of box they get put in?

And what if the ballots of Julio Hernandez and Lakeisha Johnson just happen to get lost in the illegal drop box?

One more good reason to make your signature illegible!

It's a federal crime to mess around with those boxes, and only certain people are allowed to interact with them. If those rules are broken, people go to jail. Just like these Republicans should.

It is a federal crime to screw with the mail, and so that process is protected. Official boxes have their own protocol as well.

If it isn't a big deal, then I guess yippee... but I can't imagine that leaving ballots off in an unsecured box can not complicate whether said ballots are legitimate anymore.

They get counted anyway, that's what the law says.

Now, if they aren't properly sealed that's another matter--assume they've been tampered with and discard.

This is election rigging plain and simple. There is NOTHING stopping the corrupt Republicans from poring through the ballots in "their" boxes, looking up the party affiliation of every voter, burning the Dem ballots then turning over the remaining ballots to election officials.

I am mystified as to why every single one of those bogus boxes isn't being surveilled 24/7 and anyone attempting to take possession of their contents arrested immediately.
