California Doing California Things

526 proposed murders are paltry to you. They are not paltry to me.

A. They are proposed and B. they are paltry when you compare them to the ACTUAL 2,500 deaths just in Los Angeles County.

Why haven't democrats fixed this? Why do democrats enable these deaths? Democrats for all intents and purposes are using death squads to cull 2,500 drug addicts and mental patients every years just in Los Angeles County.

But hey, we have high speed rail. Oh wait.....

So for you, threatening to shoot someone in the head is the same as providing a roof over their head, eh? Not to me.

The growing Fentanyl crisis, which caused the majority of the deaths you reference, is indeed horrifying. So why is the mayor of Lancaster proposing freely distributing the drug? Even if it were in jest, though he insists it was not, it would be a sick fucking joke and not funny at all. As a serious policy proposal, it's something like Khmer Rouge levels of evil.

Sure, Jan.

Why are 2,500 homeless drug addicts and mental patients allowed to die in Los Angeles County EVERY YEAR. That actually is Khmer Rouge numbers if you factor in the deaths that happen in the rest of the state of California. You clutch your pearls and weep when a dickhead says something stupid but the 2,500 actual deaths (enabled by the democrats) bother you less so if at all. So why isn't anything getting done to address this? Why do democrats persist with things that make it worse and cause more misery and death? Why does the mayor of Los Angeles not give a shit to the seven dead homeless that happen every day?

Because no one has any idea of how to prevent that from happening. There's no plot to make it happen on purpose, except for in the twisted imagination of the Republican mayor of Lancaster, CA.

If you are seriously claiming literally that no one is doing anything about homelessness, you're wrong, and you must know that you're wrong, since you yourself often post critiques of state programs and efforts to combat homelessness, or as you often call it, wasting your tax dollars. It's not possible for there to be no program and a too-expensive program at the same time. So I don't really know how to respond to that obviously illogical claim. Suffice it to say that every Californian city and county has, and is required to maintain, a master plan for dealing with homelessness and its related risks. Millions of dollars, thousands of hours, thousands of people, are dedicated to this project every year. Even some Republicans help out sometimes, mostly those whose Christian faith proves stronger than their fascist politics.

Really? I am not so sure about that. This level of incompetence is not easy to achieve. And the number of deaths is fairly consistent over the past few years. And the outcomes of democrats’ dumb policies are entirely predictable. What’s the legal term, negligent homicide ? Your man in Lancaster hasn’t unalived anyone as far as I know but Marxist mayor Karen Bass has blood on her hands.

Because she tried to do something about homelessess in her city, instead of the inaction and apathy that you have advocated for? That's unhinged.

She has done fuck all and achieved fuck all. The number of deaths is consistent. Why are you so quick to defend these homicidal maniacs? Why do you hate the homeless?

What would YOU do?

Be specific. No handwaving. No "Well, I certainly wouldn't..." bullshit. Concrete proposals.

What, exactly, would you do, if you were empowered to set policy in this area?

Obviously you have some excellent proposals to make, given how dismissive you are of the people currently tasked with tackling the problems. Let's hear 'em.

Personal finance company, WalletHub, released a study on June 17 ranking the best and worst-run citiesin the country, with at least six of California's cities ranking in the bottom 10. The website took the 148 most populated cities in the country and evaluated them across six categories: financial stability, education, health, safety, economy, infrastructure & and pollution. San Francisco ranked dead last as the worst-run U.S. city on the list. The East Bay city of Oakland landed two spots above it at No. 146.

News

Congratulations to California governor Newsom. Sterling work.

As riots engulfed Los Angeles and mobs vandalized public buildings, incinerated vehicles, and assaulted law enforcement officers, California governor Gavin Newsom was enjoying a swanky wine-tasting party in Napa Valley.

Oh please, please run for President.

Ah yes. I've always wondered why we let the governor appoint the mayors of all those cities, instead of electing them ourselves.

Out of curiosity, do you consider Wallethub to be a generally reliable source of information?

Yeah, fuck all that cancer research! We urgently need the governor uselessly standing around in front of news cameras while the people whose job it actually is to respond to riots do their job!

Reliable enough to use as bait.
Shhh, you'll scare the fish away before the fun begins!
TSwizzle's driving the boat.
See, you think that, but I happen to know that my former Bay Area 'burb is Wallethub's "Happiest City in America" three years running.
There's a lot of subjectivity to these city ratings, as they use different metrics and weighting to their analyses. My city got ranked "best of something" recently, and I was sorta shocked. My city doesn't seem like some big standout to me. Its wise to take individual rankings with a grain of salt. The general trends are worth paying attention to, though. I think most any survey would rank SF and Oakland at the bottom 10% or lower. Their problems are pretty obvious and well known. Maybe there's a turnaround on the horizon, though. I'm hopeful that Daniel Lurie will bring some sanity back to SF city management. I'm less optimistic about Oakland. I kinda like Barbara Lee, but I don't think she is the right person to make tough decsions and turn Oakland around.

In other California news, we may be headed to $8/gal gas in the not-too-distant future.

‘Cannot do business in the state of California’: Gas prices could hit $8/gallon as two refineries shut down

Two large California oil refineries are shutting down, triggering mounting concerns from state legislators, industry groups and many others.

Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson of the Gardena district bluntly described his concern during a recent Sacramento hearing.

“This is a tremendous loss,” Gipson told NBC Los Angeles, referring to the looming closure of the Phillips 66 plant near L.A. "The jobs that it holds, the individuals… working each and every day, those individuals live in my district, they shop in my district, they add to the economy in my district."

The Phillips 66 and Valero’s Benicia sites are set to close in 2026. Together, the shutdowns will eliminate nearly 300,000 barrels-per‑day of refining capacity — roughly 20% of the total used in the state.

Valero attributed its decision to “years of regulatory pressure (and) significant fines for air quality violations,” including an $82 million penalty levied in 2024. Phillips 66 similarly cited business challenges stemming from California’s strict environmental regulations.

"They have said that they cannot do business in the state of California," Gipson reiterated. “The regulatory agencies have imposed on the refiners of California very stringent regulation that makes it very difficult for them to remain in the state of California.”

Really?! I remember when she was running for governor and she was in the debate. She's another progressive lunatic. And at 78, she should be retired by now. Where are the young people?
