Victoria's Deputy Police Commissioner, Shane Patton, confirmed in a brief press conference on Thursday morning that Cardinal Pell had been issued with multiple charges relating to historical sexual abuse allegations.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether he will actually appear - he is currently working at the Vatican, and Australia has no extradition treaty with the Vatican State. He refused to travel to Australia to testify at the Royal Commission into institutional abuse, claiming ill health, and eventually gave testimony by video link to that commission.

He's laying the groundwork for saying he's too ill to travel.

He said he wants to come and has been talking to his doctors on how to make that possible.

"Guilty until proven ..." etc., but the man who supported and hid so many convicted abusers looks like a slimeball to me.

Pell and his ilk are consummate, clever scum. I hope he spends time in jail at the very least.

As reported by NYT in US: Australian Cardinal and Aid to Pope Is Charged With Sexual Assault https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/28/world/australia/cardinal-george-pell-charged-sexual-abuse.html

Ms. Milligan said that she had interviewed the cardinal’s accusers for more than a year and that the accusations covered several decades. Some episodes were said to have occurred at a pool in Ballarat, a city in Victoria where the cardinal was born and where he returned after being ordained as a priest in Rome.

Oh the shame Dr. Blake .... Pell was born in Ballarat and said to have abused children at a pool there under cover of the collar.

Here is the guy who was accused of abusing an alleged victim and when Cardinal Pell's lawyers pointed out to the accuser that George Pell's passport proved he wasn't even in Australia at the time of the alleged event, the accuser decided it must have been a case of mistaken identity.

Ballarat lawyer Ingrid Irwin, who represents two of Cardinal Pell's accusers, has warned her clients that she is "not confident of a conviction."

Maybe that's because her clients waited so long to decide whether or not to make the accusation.

Maybe it is. Hey, it could even be because Pell is innocent - but even you don't seem to truly believe that.

Whether he is guilty of the specific charges or not, it would require an extraordinary level of incompetence on his part for him not to be a slimy scumbag who put the protection of his own position and that of his mates above the protection of children.

Pell may, perhaps, be innocent under the law; even if guilty, he may well avoid conviction. But there can be no doubt that he is not a good person, for any reasonable definition of the word 'good'.

Being an immoral scumbag isn't necessarily a crime, but it is nevertheless a good reason to despise someone. Particularly someone who is held up as a moral authority.

There are two flavors of catholic priest. There are pedophiles and those who don't rat out the pedophiles.

There are certainly more of the latter but they are all scum.
