Climate Change(d)?

I agree that those who make overly apocalyptic proclamations do a disservice to the actual science.

And yet the cranks influence the policy makers.
And so do the deniers.
There you go with the denier crap again.

We have not had a sensible climate and energy policy in the forty to fifty years that we have known we have needed one.

With the two sides pushing and pulling we end up with a mishmash of hardly useful approaches when we needed a holistic, visionary overhaul of our energy policy.

You really do believe that you can stop the planet’s climate from changing for the first time ever. What are you smoking fella?
So you are complaining about being considered a "denier",
Yes. Because no one, absolutely no one denies climate changes. this is just a religious incantation yelled at heretics. Quite funny actually.

and accuse a poster of thinking this is the first time the climate on Earth has changed. So good enough for the goose, but not the gander.
I never said that, read it again.

Well, it's that time of the year again;

From March 2000, 23 years ago!

Global warming, the heating of the atmosphere by increased amounts of industrial gases, is now accepted as a reality by the international community. According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event".

"Children just aren't going to know what snow is," he said.

The effects of snow-free winter in Britain are already becoming apparent.

News

From today.

Amber and yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are in place across the UK from today until the end of this week. Snow is set to hit parts of Scotland today before spreading south next week as cold air from the Arctic brings freezing temperatures. "Throughout the week we are going to see more and more snow showers and warnings, towards the end of the week we will probably see an accumulation.

It‘s just like you to cherry pick one statement from one scientist twenty-some years ago and pretend it is a big defeater for climate change. You said some months ago, and I called you on it, that ALL the predictions made for climate change some twenty years ago turned out to be false and that’s just WRONG, and I showed you it was WRONG, and you never replied. Now let’s talk about snow. Guess what? Increased periodic snowfall and frigid weather is a PREDICTION OF CLIMATE CHANGE.

But, as P.Z. says in the above linked piece, it’s hard to explain this to people who avoid thinking.

I might add that back then it was not understood that global warming was weakening the jet stream, resulting in more intense cold sometimes during the winter. Which is why I also pointed out that predictions of climate change made twenty years go, to the extent that they missed the mark, UNDERESTIMATED the problem.

Oh... this is a pedantic nomenclature thing like #BLM, where people dishonestly represented "Black Lives Matters" as meaning "Only Black Lives Matter".

Yeah, what we “believe,” correctly, is that climate is being changed by HUMAN ACTIVITY, which can be controlled, and this human-caused climate change is happening MUCH MORE RAPIDLY than previous instances of climate change that were not caused by human activity.

Nothing pedantic about it. Nobody denies climate changes. You can go around it a hundred different ways (and you will) but it still comes back to "no one, absolutely no one denies that the earth's climate changes.". But you are of the climate catastrophe cult. The new puritans that chastise and shame the evil doers and heretics for their sins of modern living. And to you and your ilk I say LOL!!

And further to imply that the science is fabricated to support an agenda is definitely unsupported.
Sure, Jan. Did you learn nothing from the Covid shambles?

Sure, Jan, and what ”Covid shambles” would THAT be? The shambles of tons of unnecessary deaths caused by a lunatic of a president and his death-cult party that were urging people NOT to wear masks, or to vaccinate once the vaccine became available? Or did you have some other “shambles” in mind, like the LIE that scientists fabricated stuff about Covid and its peril? BTW, did you recall that the orange hunk of garbage, who refused to wear a mask, actually GOT Covid?

You’re denying that it is changing now, and changing fast, BECAUSE OF HUMANS. That is what you are denying, and you are wrong — you, and the rest of the cult of climate-change denialists.

Looks like the young set are wising up;

A third of UK teenagers believe climate change is “exaggerated”, a report has found. Researchers from the CCDH gathered a dataset of text transcripts from 12,058 climate-related YouTube videos posted by 96 channels over almost six years from 1 January 2018 to 30 September 2023. They also included the results of a nationally representative survey conducted by polling company Survation which found 31% of UK respondents aged 13 to 17 agreed with the statement “Climate change and its effects are being purposefully overexaggerated”. This rose to 37% of teenagers categorised as heavy users of social media, meaning they reported using any one platform for more than four hours a day.

Teh Gruaniad

Of course, the cultists hate this and blame it on "Big Tech" and "misinformation". The cultists call for censorship against the heretics.

It's not hyperbole, it is propaganda. The politics of it has an agenda. It is an anti modernization, anti capitalist, anti-human agenda.

This could lead to an interesting discussion. What is the reason for politicians to have an anti modernization, anti capitalist, anti-human agenda? Given that they are "anti-human," are they instead pro-reptile or what? Why?

Haha. The only thing here resembling religious incantation is your repeated droning on about “rapture-like cults”, “sure, Jan”, and weather forecasts for Santa Monica.

You do not engage on the actual science because you can’t.

I agree with you here. You claim, without any personal experience or scientific acumen, that climate change has happened naturally in the past. This means that you rely on climate scientists to give you this information. Yet, you will deny* the very same climate scientists when they tell you that the current changes are due to anthropogenic causes and will likely cause massive disruption to our standard of living.

*Oops. I used the “d” word.

You need to reread the OP if you think that is the case. It is terribly unknown how our impact on the climate will finish up. It could end up costing us more and making life a bit more chaotic and uncomfortable. It could run away and make borderline habitable places on the planet uninhabitable, could be much worse, we don't know. We are seeing more frequent high-intensity events, where precip, temp, storms. The heat wave in the Pacific NW that precipitated this thread didn't peg the meter, it broke it. In a La Nina year! You put a steak in a freezer and it comes out cooked, there is a problem with the freezer.

That you consider pragmatism regarding the realities of the changing climate to be a cult just indicates how little you even bother to care about what other people are saying.

You do not engage on the actual science because you can’t.

There really isn't much in the way of science presented. I have explained this before. I tend to ridicule the outlandish claims that appear in the legacy media about the coming climate apocalypse. The science of "tipping points" is just junk science.

Ah yes, the weasel word "likely". Greta, Al Gore etc. do not say "likely". They thunderously shout it from the pulpit with utter conviction like the deranged religious cultist they are. We are living in a time of boiling oceans you see. I look forward to when I can surf without a wet suit.

These people are full of shit.

"Terribly unknown" Jimmy? Be careful, you may be seen as a heretic and cast out from the congregation.

"Could"?!! I am starting to doubt your commitment to the church of climate apocalypse Jimmy. "we don't know". That's right, you don't know but doesn't seem to stop your ilk from acting like they do know.

Sorry but this either a lie or just plain ignorance. There is a rich abundance of research in climate science. I admit that it isn’t always easily accessible to the layperson and unfortunately science communication isn’t what it should be.

Note that Greta and Al Gore are not climate scientists, as I have stated many times before. I will concede that there are those who use hyperbolic language and can do harm to the overall message. This causes unknowledgeable laypeople like you to be confused about the true science. This is unfortunate.

I was being very specific about where there is a lack of science is presented i.e. in the legacy media and here. Sure there is plenty of research material available much of it is corrupt and junk.

We all know that Greta and Al are not scientists but they grab the limelight. Gavin Newsom is as dumb and ignorant as they come and yet he tells us with unwavering certainty that we are all in imminent danger from climate change. Do you believe Newsom? The "we follow the science" guy that closed schools for two years, shut down businesses for two years because of "science" that was shit?

You see, for people who don’t like to learn anything, this is not rocket science. The first prediction of human-induced climate change because of the burning of fossil fuels was made in the 19th century. President Johnson talked about it in the 1960s, based on input from his scientists. You can run a simple experiment in high school showing you how carbon dioxide traps heat. It is simply obvious that pumping exponentially greater amounts of the stuff into the atmosphere, which we have been doing since the 19th century, is going to cause the climate to warm.

Why is it that doubt regarding the outcome of climate change is always to the safe side for you? The predictions could be woefully underpredicting the impact. The system could manage a new equilibrium as well... once we stop increasing CO2 into the atmosphere. Of course, we are managing all sorts of other behaviors that'd inhibit such a sequester, like deforestation.
We are seeing more frequent high-intensity events,
Hmmm, not really.
Frequency of Cat 5 hurricanes over time alone demonstrate this. The interesting part here is you are saying climates change, yet when we go deeper in talking such changes being observed, you then deny it.

What, the heat wave that broke all-time temp records in the Pacific NW by nearly 10 degrees? Records don't usually break by that much. It'd be like Ohtani hitting 420 homeruns next season. Phoenix went a month with highs 110+, the record was around half that. Duration, frequency, intensity. These are all increasing.
That you consider pragmatism regarding the realities of the changing climate to be a cult just indicates how little you even bother to care about what other people are saying.

Did someone make a doomsday prediction?
Doomsday would be a 5 mile diameter space rock slamming into earth. Doomsday would be a gamma ray burst blowing away earth’s atmosphere.
You show your hubris, thinking that any ill that befalls humanity must necessarily be “doomsday”. I’m sure that when the Santa Ana winds start and those idyllic offshore conditions set in, crap like coral bleaching in the southern hemisphere isn’t going to upset any Santa Monica apple carts.

This is just climate apocalypse porn. You want there to be a rapture.

I don't think there has been any unusual increase in frequency or intensity of hurricanes.

Again, you speak like a televangelist trying to con his flock. So, freak weather happens from time to time all over the world. I really laugh at these silly analogies of yours.

How passive aggressive of you.

I'm not allowed to phrase it the way I prefer.
