College Football Players Union Nixed

If they want to be considered professional athletes they should join a professional sports league.

Fair enough.

And on the flipside if colleges want to make an insane amount of money running a sports team they should join a professional league as well.

Did you miss the post were I noted people go out to see the laundry, not the players?

Take the Northwestern and Michigan State laundry away and how many people do you think would show up to watch those guys play football?

How many people would show up to watch NFL players play football if you took their laundry away?

While these are participants, they do not draw in the crowds.
Neither do most of the players, especially bench warmers. So should only the stars on the team get paid?
That is how they do it in the pro's.

Curious, how much revenue should relatively unpaid players be allowed to generate before they are considered to be unfairly compensated?

I think if you took all the laundry away from NFL players and hired Arena football players to be the New York Giants and Chicago Bears some enterprising person would pay to put their laundry on the likes of Tom Brady and Dez Bryant and quite a large number of people would pay to watch the new league, not the NFL.

These college players, not so much.

Northwestern alumni will keep rooting for the guys in Northwestern laundry.

I think you overestimate the loyalty of NFL fans to particular players.

I do not think there is all that much loyalty to particular players. The main point there is NFL fans want to see the best players. If some other league has all the best players people will watch that other league.

College fans are not there to watch the best players. They go to watch Northwestern play, not because Bobby Smith is playing.

More like dismal is overestimating our patience over their ridiculous arguments. People don't pay Ford for the people that help build their cars, they just want to buy their cars, therefore, we shouldn't pay them either.

Patriots fans go to watch the Patriots play. That Tom Brady is the quarterback is just a bonus. Throw Matt Stafford in there and Patriots fans will still go watch their team play.

So then you must double+ agree with me that Northwestern fans don't go to watch these particular kids play. They certainly aren't jonesing to see some anonymous 19 year old kid who will be gone in a year playing for the 90th best team in college football if they aren't willing to pay to see Tom Brady.

Good question.

But why then do the universities use the players likenesses and reference them in advertising and merchandise?

I already granted that point.

I'm just saying that the same thing is true in the NFL and yet the NFL manages to pay their players.

The NFL is a professional football league.

I assume the Arena Football League and the Canadian Football League pay players too because they are professional football leagues.

If you want to be paid to play football you need to go to one of those leagues where they pay people.

Northwestern, I suspect, makes it pretty clear you're not going to get paid to pay football if you go there. Even if you form a union they still are not going to pay you.

What happens when you form a "players association" and the entire team refuses to play? Do they take away your scholarship and kick you out of school? Or did they sign a contract?

They get some other guys. *shrug*

And yes I would imagine they take away your athletic scholarship if you refuse to play.

They can do this now if they want. Don't need a union. We don't have laws forcing people to play football.

No, but you might gain the right to be a student first and to put your studies ahead of games and practices. You gain the right to have appropriate medical care and screenings and to avoid performing tasks and plays that are likely to result in serious injuries, including concussions and blown out knees and vertebrae.

Hahahahaha. So they just put in random students? Hahahahaha.

Hahahahaha. So they just put in random students? Hahahahaha.

Well, not random students. They put in the little guys who didn't get onto the team in the first place because they didn't match up to the obstinate coach's ideal of what a football player should look like, but who have the heart and determination to make up for what they lack in physical structure.

Not only will this teach those no-good leftist football players a valuable lesson in teamwork, but it will be an inspiring story about how the human spirit is the most important attribute any athlete can have. Sure, they'll get run over and broken by the other team in their first game, of course, but until then it will be a very uplifting situation.
