Conservatives freaking out over the removal of Aunt Jemima

Conservatives: Racism, and other social issues should be solved by the free market. Just give it time, and they will adjust.

Free Market Adjusts.

Conservatives: Waaahhhh, we don't want the free market to change what I like.

Why do you hate capitalism?
If purposely misunderstanding was an Olympic sport, you could go to Tokyo next year.
I apologize. Since it was to difficult for you, I will spell it out in easy to understand words.

Quaker Oats is making a business. Businesses try to increase make more sales or profits. They do this by selling their products stuff to customers. Clearly, Quaker Oats feels this accomplishes achieves gets that goal.

Do you have any knowledge about their actual customer base or their target market? Please provide give the rest of us with that insight (and proof). If you do, perhaps you could convince Quaker Oats to hire you as as a consultant as advisor.

If not, then why do you hate capitalism?

But but but the Free Market isn't doing it because they want to but because some people in the market are pressuring them to. That makes Baby Free Market Jesus cry. :(

I see no reason why black people should be embarassed by these stereotypes. I do see a very good reason why white folks should be. Some things are better left in the past.

Of course the shame belongs to white people. But a lotta white people cannot help but try to heap their shame on other people, keeping them 'in their place' and reminding them, as constantly as possible that they used to be considered property, not people. And treated as such. It's a tactic that a lot of abusers use. Constantly reminding a victim of pain inflicted in the past. It might be only echoes and distant memories but it still hurts.

The problem conservatives have with the removal for Aunt Jemima from syrup bottles is it demonstrates how their influence in American society is shrinking. This is the same reaction we get when a big corporation puts a same sex couple in their advertising.

There was a time when conservatives felt big corporations represented them and their values. They realized this loss first with corporate media, which was the first target of their outrage. Now, their market place power is so small, no one in the boardroom worries about "conservative backlash."

It is 20fucking20. The idea any person would object to the removal of Aunt Jemima or Uncle Ben in the year 2020 is just beyond ridiculous. The only remark that can be made is "What the hell took so long?!"

Granted, the Cleveland Indians and Washington Redskins still exist, and some people are all like "but it's heritage!"

Bronzeage hits it on the head! This is more about the losing of control and influence (or sense of control) that some white people can't stand.

While you are showing the "whitewashed image, here is the origins.:
It's not whitewashed image, it's the very images that are at issue here.

It's not just the image, it's the whole concept and their names. "Auntie" and "Uncle" were a standard way of referring to older black servants up through Jim Crow era (until just 50 years ago). It was a way to ensure blacks were never given the respect of being referred to as Mrs or Mr which were reserved for whites b/c they are etymologically derived from "Master". PepsiCo updated her appearance from the cartoonish happy slave lovingly serving the white kids pancakes, but kept the same name that was tied to that same mentality.

I will never for the life of me understand why people get so upset about something that has absolutely no affect on their lives. Corporations update their brands to better reflect the ever-changing values of society all the time. And it has absolutely no affect on my life or anyone else's for that matter. Zero. Zilch. Nada. And in the end even those people who bitterly complained about it will hardly remember it. Thirty years from now the name "Aunt Jemima" will be nothing more than an answer to a trivia question on Jeopardy.

I remember long ago when the Washington Wizards changed its name to the Wizards from the Washington Bullets because the word "bullets" created an imagery of violence. People complained about that, too. Even I thought it was rather silly. But is anyone still complaining now? If you asked most young NBA fans what was the former name of the Wizards most wouldn't know nor would they even care. In the near future it will be the same with Aunt Jemima.

Doesn't that apply to the advertising icons themselves too? Toni's life is not affected by having Uncle Ben or an Indian chick on a package of butter either.
And yet she is deeply upset by them.

I wish these companies would just do the right thing and not issue a press release about how they are finally gonna stop doing the wrong thing. Those press releases ARE "virtue signaling". Whereas, the actual rebranding is simply "virtue". Thus, what's really upsetting the right wingers isn't "liberalism", it's commercialism and capitalism.

Okay, not completely, they're upset b/c they're racists who don't like that humanity is leaving them behind in the 17th century.

I see you are digging in. Really trying for that medal I see.

But really slowly for you:
Criticizing .... actions ... of ... an ... individual ... business ... or ... even .... being ... against ... corporatism ... is .... not ...the .... same ... as ... being ... against ... capitalism.

One can be for the latter and against the former. It's not as clear cut as liberal vs. conservative. The latter can be described as truly liberal, while the former is not.

Blatant racism upsets all decent people, and advertising is just propaganda that can be as racist as Mein Kampf. A company rebranding doesn't in itself upset any sane human. Which is why everyone who thinks rebranding is something to complain about is proving they either literally lack basic sanity, or exposing that they are upset b/c they are racists who don't like that society is becoming less openly supportive of racism.

Thenyou should learn what motivates firms to make decisions. Quaker Oats is looking out for Quaker Oats. Not for the "woke" or bigots or racists.

For some reason, you feel you know more about Quaker Oats's customer base, goals and expectations for sales and profits than Quaker Oats. Please enlighten us.
