"Coronavirus and the US" or "We are all going to die!!!!"

At this stage, a vaccine for this virus is just a pipe dream!

If there's no vaccine then masks will probably become permanent.

I doubt it. But flu viruses have this nasty habit of mutating. This novel Chinese virus is no exception.

Except that although influenza is an RNA virus, this:
But RNA replication typically lacks the error-correction mechanisms cells employ when copying DNA, so RNA viruses make mistakes during replication. Coronaviruses have the longest genomes of any RNA virus—consisting of 30,000 letters, or bases—and the more material a pathogen copies, the more opportunity there is for mistakes. The upshot is that these viruses mutate very rapidly. Some of these mutations may confer new properties, such as the ability to infect new cell types—or even new species.

Our flu vaccine is for the top three from the prior season. You can only get new strains. The next year the top three from last season. Rinse, lather, repeat.

I would expect that, like flu, there will be more mutations. Perhaps the flu vaccine pattern will emerge.

On the other hand, the most common coronavirus -- cold virus -- has no vaccine even though they have tried.

Has a vaccine successfully been produced for any coronavirus, ever?

Found this on reddit (for what its worth)
"RNA viruses" is a large category of viruses that contains dozens of families of viruses (all viruses whose genomes use RNA rather than DNA). Many RNA viruses have vaccines, including influenza, rabies, measles, mumps, hepatitis A, polio, etc. There are no currently available coronavirus vaccines in humans.

So yes, there have been many successful vaccines against RNA viruses, but none for coronaviruses.
Apparently there is a vaccine for dogs against a coronavirus.

I wasn't aware of this one, Israel has one for use in chickens that they are using as a starting point for a Covid-19 vaccine. I haven't seen anything on how they're faring.

So the answer is no. But on the sunny side of things with the world focusing on the problem we might finally discover a technique that leads to a cure for the common cold. Although that's unlikely because I was just watching a Star Trek NG episode in which someone quipped that they still couldn't cure the common cold. On the other hand they obviously haven't cured baldness either. Funny that I don't see many dogs going bald. Maybe there's a connection there?

The was McCoy on a TOS episode. I believe by TNG they had cured it.

Thanks, you're correct of course. Somehow I'm still not encouraged though. Was that the one in which Scotty's girl friend gets infected by a novel alien virus and he tells her that it's just "space sickness" and to go back to work?

It's not an influenza virus, it's a coronavirus. And it's utterly stupid to call it 'novel Chinese virus', as that description covers literally hundreds of viruses of all kinds - and is therefore only useful in identifying people who get their talking points from right wing anti-Chinese fuckwits. Literally nobody outside that group of people calls Covid-19 "Chinese virus". It's an attempt at framing that failed; and those who are still trying to make it succeed several months later just look sad and pathetic.

I mean, you could have saved a lot of time and just posted "I know nothing at all about this subject". It carries exactly the same information as your post, but without the hints that you could be a racist prick.

Many, me included, called it " Chinese virus" because as far as is known, it originated there. But I read somewhere where some Italian scientists are claiming they've found evidence in human waste material of all places, that this virus existed many months before it manifested in Wuhan.

It probably did manifest in Wuhan, but it's looking more and more like it was around for months before it was noticed.

As it stands today, more than 10 million people have been infected worldwide, and well over half a million have died. A vaccine is looking more and more like a pipe dream as it stands today.

Let's call it the Right Wing China Virus then.

How about the populist virus? It's the countries with populist leaders that are really getting fucked.

I saw a video showing that masks, even deluxe double filtered ones, do not lower the oxygen level shown on a consumer pulse oximeter. This what not done for someone running intensely, where maybe suction effects could mechanically fuck your lungs.

Anyway, do these masks effect carbon dioxide levels in your blood? Is that easily measured?

It's a little harder to breath through my N95 mask when I'm walking from the car to the grocery store on a hot humid day with bad air quality. I should probably get some thinner masks. I still think I'm safer around people wearing that type than a bandanna or none at all. Here in CT almost everyone wears a mask in public and testing is down to a 1% positivity rate.

Carbon dioxide levels in the blood are very tightly regulated by the body, and even very small departures from normal are very bad and rapidly apparent to the sufferer.

Indeed, the metabolic systems that manage carbon dioxide are so important that the body doesn't even bother to monitor its oxygen levels - as long as your carbon dioxide levels are normal, the body detects nothing wrong, and just assumes that your oxygen levels are OK. This is why anoxia is so dangerous - if you breathe a pure nitrogen atmosphere, or regular air at a pressure too low for your blood to oxygenate adequately, the carbon dioxide is still getting exhaled at normal rates, and you can easily die before you even realise you're in trouble.

Being in a somewhat weakened state I experience two pretty common sensations. I feel warm and closed in sensation when wearing a mask which I relate to oxygen deficit. It's clear to me that any constraint on my breathing - things which feeling warm and feeling closed in indicate - amplifies my heart rate and breathing rate. So mentally wearing a mask leads me right back to "I experience this so I must be ...."

I'm getting to the point where its with my state of mind it doesn't really matter.
