Covid-19 miscellany

When you listen to national media and the like, you'd think it's only Sturgis motorcycle rallies and other predominantly white pastimes where people congregate without masks.

To some extent this is true, certainly on here. Here in California, the insufferable prick of a governor has wrapped his tiers around race and "health equity". The lifting of restrictions is now dependent on the number of cases reported in minorities communities, minorities being blacks and hispanics. Two groups that don't particularly adhere to some of the guidelines issued. So white people going to church etc are vilified as being irresponsible and selfish but when minorities do it they are somehow doing it because racism and oppression or something.

Rap events are often ignored even though they are packed and usually indoors.

In Los Angels there are party organizers that take over vacant buildings and hold large parties. The cops are unable or unwilling to do anything about it.

On a side note, the lockdown has resulted in record homicides in Los Angels, numbers not seen since 2009. Way to go Newsom ! :thumbsup:

Desmond Swayne injects some reality during a debate in the commons;

Herd Stupidity

I wonder if it's true what he said about death rate being consistent with the average for this time of year? That Covid has not raised death rate above average?

I have seen articles that claim that the average death rate in the US is running above average because of Covid....which should also be true for the UK. If so, it contradicts Swayne's remark.

I haven't looked at the current data for other countries, the US is running far above normal--that's where the 300k figure comes from. That's how far above normal we are since this blew up.

More draconian and irrational restrictions imposed in Wales;

Wales' 17-day lockdown will start later, with the first minister saying the priority is about "saving lives not saving Christmas". From 18:00 BST people are being told to stay at home, with all but essential businesses closed. Economists have warned the lockdown may cost the economy more than £500m and the Conservatives have accused ministers of having "no exit plan". But the Welsh Government said any delay would have caused greater harm. Pubs, bars, restaurants and hotels, as well as all non-essential shops will have to close, with people being told only to travel for essential reasons, such as for medical treatment, to buy food and to exercise. The nationwide "firebreak", which comes after local lockdowns in communities, aims to slow the rise in Covid cases and hospital admissions.

BBC

The rules actually prevent stores from selling "non essential" goods even if available while you are buying a loaf of bread.

"Firebreak", "circuit break", more anti-science propaganda to add to the "ratlickers" and the quaint "covidiodts".

Yeah, our vommunity did that. Stores that sell, say, nothing but party supplies would be closed, making them unable to compete with a supermarket that also had a rack of party decorations beside the food, diapers, and anti-bacterial shaving cream.

So, it appears the final message from the White House on Covid-19 is Fait Accompli.

artilce said:
A stunning White House claim that the US cannot control the fast-worsening pandemic is overshadowing President Donald Trump's frantic last-ditch bid to turn around his reelection race with Democrat Joe Biden with eight days to go.

The comments by White House chief of staff Mark Meadows on CNN on Sunday alarmed medical experts who argue that letting the coronavirus rage unchecked is akin to a policy of herd immunity that will cost many thousands of lives. But with daily new infections hitting record levels, Trump spent the weekend in a campaign blitz in which he openly flouted steps like masking and social distancing that could slow the spread of the disease and moaned that all the media talks about is "Covid, Covid, Covid."
"We are not going to control the pandemic," Meadows told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" Sunday, arguing that "proper mitigation factors" like therapies and vaccines should be the priority.

Apparently, American Exceptionalism excludes competent management of a pandemic. We are lucky that Covid-19 isn't super deadly because... oh boy!

Or maybe more simplified, another way to take Mark Meadows statement in an accurate paraphrase:
Paraphrase Mark Meadows said:
The Trump Administration is not going to control the pandemic."

The world's number one soccer player (arguably) has vented his frustration at the Covid test, calling it bullshit;

Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his frustration after a third positive Covid-19 test ruled him out of Juventus' UEFA Champions League clash with Barcelona and reportedly “feels like a beast forced to stay in cage.” The Juventus star took to Instagram on Wednesday to tell his 241 million followers he is “feeling good and healthy,” but added in a subsequent (and since-deleted) comment: “PCR IS BULLSHIT.”

He has continued to keep followers updated during his recovery, and last week appeared to be in good spirits as he worked on an exercise bike alone at home.

RTNews

In last night's game six of the World Series, Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner was taken out of the game during the 7th or 8th inning because his Covid test was positive but he was healthy enough to play the earlier innings and also celebrate the win on the field after the game.

A virus so lethal that a test is required to determine if the patient has it.

In memory of Typhoid Mary
Mary Mallon (September 23, 1869 – November 11, 1938), also known as Typhoid Mary, was an Irish-born cook believed to have infected 53 people with typhoid fever, three of whom died, and the first person in the United States identified as an asymptomatic carrier of the disease.

What about the death rate being well above average? If over 200 thousand have died of C19 in the US to date, isn't that sufficient reason to take precautions?

So do we need to just let it go wild, let the economy come grinding to a halt to get the idiots to shut up?

200k ? Not hardly. Consigning people into crushing poverty from which they may never recover is not taking precautions. And there are other contributing factors to an above average death rate.

Stay home if you are that scared about catching a virus where the vast, VAST majority of people who do catch it recover from it unscathed.

Which other factors account for 200k above average deaths over this period?

Poll Worker Cleared Out Building So GOP Candidate Could Vote Maskless, Now She’s Calling It “Bullying”

A South Carolina woman running for the House of Representatives made a fuss this week after an incident at the polls that started when she refused to wear a mask.

Jennifer Brecheisen shared video to her Facebook claiming she “got singled out and bullied big time” by a poll worker who reportedly offered her a mask when she and her husband showed up not wearing them.

When Brecheisen refused his offer, Earl Moore cleared out the voting room so that the couple could vote without potentially exposing others to COVID-19 if they’re infected without knowing it.

I marvel at those who object to mask-wearing as an intolerable affront. Objecting to lockdowns I can understand, but objecting to masks???
