Oh, I think he pretty much demonstrated that he's an asshole since then. Now, to be fair, an awful lot of teenagers are assholes at least some of the time and a significant portion mostly grow out of it. We're all assholes sometimes, tbh.

In the case of this boy, I don't really see a lot of hope for him to outgrow his assholery for some time. Someone is encouraging him greatly to embrace the notion that while he certainly appeared to be an asshole (MAGA hat aside), he was actually a sweet, innocent Christian boy who was just trying to do the right thing and to protect an older man who deserved the respect of everyone. Nevermind what the crowd of boys were shouting and never mind whether or not he participated or encouraged them in any way. In my opinion, the boy and his family (I am assuming his family is involved) are being badly taken advantage of. In any case, he's getting a lot more than his 15 minutes of fame and a lot of attaboys and slaps on his back and I'm sure he will be someone to avoid at frat parties if you are a female or any person of color or sense.

The fervor started with Twitter and a troll account that launched the accusation and it caught on fire.

@2020fight claims to belong to a California schoolteacher. However its profile photo is of a blogger based in Brazil, according to CNN, which noted that Twitter's guidelines explicitly prohibit "fake and misleading accounts."

WashPo picked it up without backing it up. There are people playing the United States on social media, kind of like a specific poster with a scientific term for a name in here. And the US seems to show absolutely no resolve to stop being played. At least the Post admitted the error.

as far as the hat goes if you take it as a given that a MAGA hat means someone is a Nazi, you are the problem.
