Decent inexpensive laptop?

*Later*

Jimmy Higgin's 6 year old daughter is found cowering in a corner while a bunch of rationalists argue over which OS is most effective for her to learn to type.

Dude, this is an odd hill to want to die on.
Welcome to the Internet - is this your first day here? ;)
When I’m ready to get my daughter to try Linux, I can have here use one of the Ubuntu dual boots I have in the home. Until then, I prefer to get her something that has as many options for educational software as possible. And Linux isn’t it. So enough of the derail.

I'm just saying, it should be when she's ready, not when you are - and that's likely MUCH sooner than you think.
Please provide me a chart on her education capacity based on her age so I know how to better educate my daughter.

Went with the Chromebook. Learning the greatness that is Family Link and Chromebook . My daughter is about to age 7 years so Family Link doesn't neuter her account. With compatibility with Google Play, it does seem like a workable option. $10 I can triple the "hard drive" space, and it (Samsung Chromebook) is zippy. I can't assign hour limits to it, but I suppose I'll just do that the old fashioned way of "Paying attention to my child".

I appreciate the actual advice provided. The refurb'd Windows 10 option looked interesting, but the Black Friday deal on the Chromebook was too good to pass up on.

I'm using a Dell notebook with a docking station so it works like a desktop - dual bigass monitors, wireless keyboard, mouse, 3Tb external - when it doesn't have to travel. Got it for free from UPS (they sometimes give you stuff when you're spending a half million+/year on them). Processor seems pretty good.
Bought a Surface Pro for myself but my wife appropriated it. That is a really nice machine.
All my federal certificates, passwords and shit are already on the notebook anyhow, so I don't mind </sour grapes>.

I guess everyone who has a Microsoft computer is just an unthinking drone. Wait a minute... that sounds kind of like... cultish thinking.

People whose parents are irrationally scared to let them experience more than one way of doing something are being indoctrinated.

Lots of people have an irrational fear of non-MS software - a fear which paradoxically survives massive and horrific changes to that software.

But by all means, keep beating that strawman if it makes you feel good.

You're saying that a person's critical thinking faculties will be compromised based on what type of computer they use. I'm pretty sure that's not how that works. Maybe some people just don't want to bother with Linux and simply aren't interested in the whole process. Wow, what an idea that some people might not want the same things you want. Real shocker. Gotta judge people who don't want what you want.

He's just trying to hide his feelings of inferiority that arise from not using BeOS.

Soon Chromebooks will be able to run LINUX apps.

I don't know of any LINUX apps a 7 year old would want, but maybe you can use it to taunt Billby somehow.

Googling apps for children, chrome book, or linux brings up lots of stuff. No shortage of stuff, though not having young children, I have no idea what is truly good and outstanding.

You will want to learn to set up a Chrome book parental control system to help protect your kid form bad stuff. You tube seems to have a number of channels for science aimed for young children.

And possibly start with things like Memory Palaces, how to learn to organize memories and become a memory whizz.

I love reading reviews for apps. Especially ones that complain about having to pay for apps.

The Family Link stuff is crap. But the Google Family part is great (that helps with the keeping my daughter from bankrupting the family). Pretty much have found what I was looking for education wise.

I'm sure there are others considering purchasing a cheap Chromebook for children this time of year. This may be of interest to you:

The end of the holiday season is rapidly approaching and, around the office, we've noticed a trend pop up that hasn't been a trend before this year. It revolves around a question that we've been asked so regularly (in the office, via email, in chats, and in comments) that we stopped other video production and began working on a quick video in order to answer it. WHAT IS THE BEST CHEAP CHROMEBOOK FOR MY KID?

Been a couple months, and the Samsung Chromebook 3 has been an absolutely great idea. The size is good, memory expandable, and the Google Play library is definitely deep enough. And the Chrome OS is just simple and worry free for a 6 yr old user, as as well much more gentle on limited computer resources.

Glad to hear that you are satisfied with your choice for your current situation.

I was recently doing some research on what I might replace my main all-in-one desk top with, should it be required. Spent a lot of hours reading reviews and looking at various options. At the end of all that, I remain undecided. I like the security of Chrome and it is quite user friendly across a wide range of devices. Windows offers a wide variety of software, at present, but my needs and interests do not require the majority of it. I like the bigger screen of a desk top but I could achieve that through the addition of a monitor to a Chromebook so that is where my inclination lies presently.

In the meantime, the desk top is chugging along just fine and as there are new developments constantly in the works, this is an exercise I expect to go through at regular intervals. I believe I was one of, if not the first person in the Yukon to purchase an HP Chromebook, in 2015. Blazing boot up and on-line speed compared to the Windows systems of that day. Still runs circles around anything else I own.
