Define 'Street Fighter' please

It can mean someone who does learn his fighting outside of a normal program, or that uses fights outside out of the normal programs to solve problems. The normal programs usually have rules and a gentlemen's agreement on when to start and end a fight, and the rules involved.

And a normal program will take steps to minimize the chance of serious harm. Sport fighting is dangerous enough as it is, street fighting is far more dangerous.

How do you distinguish between a street fighter and someone who was in a fight for some random reason? Or is there no distinction, and anyone who's ever been in a fight is a street fighter unless they had training?

As Tom pointed out, it's rules without regard to the safety of others. But street fighting can encompass a lot of things.

A lot of things, but not dance. Let's just be clear on that. If your version of fighting involves any kind of choreographed musical number, you're not a street fighter.
So much for West Side Story.

FUCKING HOW?!! The only person with an illegal weapon (as per Wensleydale Rules - 1904 edition) was Zimmerman! He had a gun, used a gun. That isn't included in MMA.

Zimmerman brought a gun to a fistfight. That much is obvious. But the question here is how to define the term street fighter.

It seems likely that if Martin fits the description, Zimmerman fits it even better, but we won't know until we get a better understanding of what the term means. Right now it's so vague you could call my mother a street fighter, and she wasn't much of a fighter.

So how does one distinguish between a street fighter and someone who was in a fight for some random reason? Or is there no distinction, and anyone who's ever been in a fight is a street fighter unless they had training?

I wouldn't call a person who so happened to get into a fight out on the street a street fighter anymore than I would call a person who helped someone build a roof a roofer.

Granted, we live during a time where we might call a person who has only told a single lie a liar, or call a person who has but killed only once a killer, or call a person that has merely stolen once a thief, but ... you're not a mechanic because you once worked on your car. You're not a magician just because you tried a magic trick on your friends.

There needs to be a pattern of sorts. Perhaps an escalation in frequency. With intention. Back alley fights for money would fit the bill, but your resident badass who fights his way into honing his skills, who knows and understands the importance of never letting down your guard in a no rules bar, last man standing is the winner kind of fight (with no money involved) might very well fit the bill as well.

When such a person (a real street fighter) enters a ring to fight against a legitimate opponent, it would be well advised for the coach to warn the professional to be extra wary, as things can quickly turn dirty.

Actually, I'd expect an unarmed street fighter to be sloppy and easily beaten by someone trained to fight in any particular style (and note that quite a few martial arts are not actually for fighting - eg Thai Chi)

How can you tell if someone is a street fighter or not?

Knowing they were beaten by a trained fighter isn't enough. That would happen to just about anyone.

Well, like I said, I'd expect it to be just some fool that fights a lot, but has no training. It's not the sort of thing that has some organizing committee, after all..

It seems to me that anyone who fights on the street can be called a street fighter regardless of any training they may or may not have done. To qualify you only need to fight on the street, or perhaps an alley.

Banging your opponent's head into something hard certainly wouldn't be tolerated in MMA, either.

I would add an important word here: willingly. If you fight on the street because you were attacked that has no bearing as to whether you are a street fighter. I would also say it doesn't apply to a one-off.

Yeah but knocking him on his ass when he tries to put you in a headlock means points in your favor. If he rolls so far onto his back that his shaven scalp gets a few little scrapes that just means he needs more training in how to roll properly.

Why are we talking about MMA, anyway? The thread topic is defining the term 'street fighter'. Do you think MMA fighters are street fighters? If not, what would you say is the difference?

Street fighting would just mean not fighting in a ring. Street fighting is all encompassing and you can bring any of the skills to bear in that fight, including MMA.

Think of it as something like "class clown". A kid that tells the odd joke in class doesn't fit. If people say "Oh, there he goes again with his pranks.", that's about when the kid's become the class clown. The guy who smokes up once in a while is nothing. The guy who's constantly high is "the druggie".

A fucking GUN!!!

You still treat it as a competition where it's supposed to be a fair fight.

Self defense doesn't work that way.

What if you're unarmed and the guy with the gun chased you until he caught you? How does self defense work then? Can you hit him hard enough to give him a few minor scrapes and boo-boos? If you do, does that make you a street fighter?
