Franken and Conyers resign. The offenses minor in comparison to ...

Moore and Trump who deny and don't care.

I can't shake this suspicion that somehow Franken and Conyers were targeted because of their strong roles as critics...similar to my feeling when Trump was running for office how stories would come out and go to press about his opponents whenever they began to overtake him in the polls. For Conyers, he was one of many people paying settlements in the House but we only heard his name for some reason... For Franken, many of the victims were talking about inappropriate hugs and they were Republicans...I'm just not sure here. Maybe he was a crazy offender after all...

Anyway, it is dealt with within the Dem Party.

Now, what are conservatives going to do? Nothing, not even nothing, promote their people more...

ETA: Oops, it looks like most of this topic is being covered in another thread. feel free to merge, if necessary.

That just shows that Democrats are weaker. None of these people "need to resign" due to these allegations that have nothing to do with their jobs and mostly happened a decade or more before they had said job.

The Trumpetts came down on Franken because he came down hard on Sessions in open hearings and wasn't about to kiss Il Douchebag's ass

It's also an attempt to put the Dems in the same boat as the GOP before the 2018 mid terms to lessen the effects of VA this year.

I suspect the GOP will now try to get Harassment Allegations against every Democratic House and Senate member.

Eh, this is the Democrats playing politics over the Alabama election, trying to get the moral high-ground. Conyer's and Franken's seats are pretty safe, but winning Moore's seat would be huge.

The Democrats resigned only because enough other Democrats were demanding it.

Republicans, except Trump, would do the same.

But the key point is that the Democracts were demanding it. They said that if you want to be part of our group, this shit is unacceptable.

Republicans, on the other hand, have made a decision to wholeheartedly embrace people who do even worse. Sure, they could potentially make different decisions, but they aren't.

By 11/2018 they will have "always" rejected any candidate of questionable character - bet on it!

The Republicans are the party of rude men with a huge sense of entitlement.

They love to offend and abuse. They think they are entitled.

Have you never met one?

Conyers harassed women on his staff. Franken's case is not so clear cut. Hard to say what is right thing to do morally or politically here.

Politically, I think it might be the right move. That depends on low the risk is. I think it's probably pretty low. The chance for reward seems like it is low as well.

As for morality? Hah!

Having principles that you don't jettison as soon as they become inconvenient is the sort of 'weakness' we need more of, particularly from our politicians.

Yup.

And my Trump supporting relatives are crying Liar! and Fake News! at the press conference with some of the women who have accused Trump of some seriously bad behavior.

I've already been de-friended on FB by one and the other just deletes posts if I comment, however gently.

What we're seeing is the rails coming completely off the GOP. There used to be a time when they were renown for being authoritarian, heartless, and users of dirty political tricks. Democrats perhaps, had a share in exaggerating this some, but now things really are very, very different. Those with any moral decency or intelligence have left, or aren't considered real conservatives by their peers. The authoritarian side of this party has reared it's ugly head in a huge resurgence. They refused to confirm a supreme court justice, and they play fast and loose with congressional procedures. Donald Trump has taught them one thing very, very well. That there are little to no repercussions for their actions. They do not fear the people like they used to. They are ignorant and morally bankrupt to the core now, and this is going to culminate in an all out attack on the Mueller investigation and our own law enforcement and intelligence services. They are laying that groundwork now, if we're paying attention, and they are showing very troubling signs that they are willing to obstruct justice right along with the president, and literally put our democratic republic at risk. It's not just the fringe looking to end the Mueller investigation now, the mainstream is creeping ever closer to this all out onslaught.

This is the culmination of having ignorant and proud, anti-science, conspiracy theorists holding all the levers of power. Just as they have perverted religious freedom into a weapon, they will pervert our democracy - weaponizing it, in order to purge the "deep state". They will do all of this to save "the greatest nation on earth". It's important to remember that all of this is not normal, and some are reminding us that Trump is not the new normal and should not become normalized, but not nearly as many are watching the GOP, who have enabled this president, and will do anything to hold onto power. Trump is a symptom, not the disease, in my opinion. The GOP laid all the groundwork for this to happen, and now they are reveling in it. They are no longer afraid of "the people". The only fear they have is that of their rabid, ignorant, fear mongering base. A base intent on using the GOP for it's own purposes, and taking it over eventually.
